Young Beardsley Tournament Champ Again Holds off Ol’ Man Johnson for the win on Sept 15th and 16th in Pasco, WA
By Tom Culmsee
Brendon Beardsley, flying a near perfect contest with his Icon2, won the 2012 tournament in dramatic fashion.
Coming in on his last flight at extremely low altitude, he barely made it back to the landing area with absolutely
no speed and altitude to spare. His 1000 point score was enough to hold-off a rejuvenated Dave Johnson who
came in a close second flying his venerable Shadow. Jim Frahm was just behind in 3rd with his Aspire.
Brendon was tournament champion in 2009 (and the previous junior world F3J champion and winner of the
huge Visalia Fall Fest in 2010) so is already no stranger to big wins. He entered the final competition as tops
among the 26 pilots entered in the preliminary rounds, heading up the group of 12 vying for the right to take
home the classic Herfy’s Cup.
There was great weather all weekend (unlike the previous couple of years) with warm temperatures and light to
no wind conditions. Thermals were a bit muted and sometimes hard to find, but there was enough activity to
keep this interesting yet challenging for everyone. Seven rounds were flown on Saturday and another 3 on
Sunday morning in the preliminary competition. The final placing was determined after the lowest round score
was thrown out. The Finals competition consisted of four - 10 minute duration rounds and scored man-on-man.
Special awards were provided to Ken Eaton as both the top finishing Competitor Class pilot and RES class
glider. The top Expert Class (B. Beardsley, Knight & Grace) and Competitor (Eaton, Frahm, Hood) teams won
a pie award slice. The Silver cup (over 62) was won by the newly ancient John Burke.
Interesting bits . . . Gramper Brightbill smacked a thermal ribbon pole on his very first landing approach, but
managed to score a landing without suffering any damage. . . . Sherman Knight blew the arm hubs on both
aileron servos on his last finals flight with an aggressive launch and flew the rest of his flight rudder/elevator
only. . . . Daddy Dave Beardsley wiped out the flap horns on his first finals landing and was forced to scratch
the remainder of the rounds.
Humongous thanks to local hosts Don Stewart and Doug Coleman and to the always wonderful Mary Ann
Parker as scorekeeper, Cathy Boysen and Linda Hobbs for flight control and the Eastside Fly Guys headed by
Steve Adams and Lee Urbaniak for equipment set-up and support.

2012 NWSS Awards Banquet This year as in the past few years the NWSS Awards Banquet was held at Tony Roma’s that
famous place for ribs and other good stuff.
To begin the evening’s festivities, Tom Culmsee presented an outstanding slide show tribute to
Kirby Parker with many pictures of Kirby from the past several years that Kirby was active in
the NWSS.
NWSS President Doug Coleman cleverly persuaded Art Boysen into being the MC for the
awards portion of the program. Also since Doug was supposed to do this write-up, yours truly
ye Olde newsletter editor has stepped in to do said task, boy does he know how to work things.
So without further ado, let’s get to the awards for the evening. However, we shall digress for a
moment. Doug passed around a thank you card for folks to sign for Les Grammer who will be
leaving us and moving to California. Les is retiring as the NWSS Scorekeeper and passing the
hat to the capable hands of Rex Grace.
Now back to your regularly scheduled program. Please note I may have the order of business
slightly off from this point on.
Steve Yerchevich Most Improved Flyer Award: This year’s award goes to Lee Urbaniak who
showed a marked improvement in flying by raising his season point’s average by over 7 %.
Nice flying Lee.
Competitor to Expert Award: This year Ken Eaton joined the Expert ranks.
Silver Cup Award: There was a slight mix up on this award but it was corrected the next day.
John Burke was this year’s winner.
Cliff Mink Service Award: This year the award was presented to Duane Cassidy who was
nominated by Bruce and Colleen Bumgarner for his willingness to help behind the scenes at the
contests he attends and all of the other good things that he has done over the almost 30 years of
contest flying in the NWSS.

Shavings from the Editors Desk By Perry White (AKA Jim Pugh)
Well the 2012 flying season is over so it is
time to start working on the next great glider
project for the 2013 either building or
repairing, and if the weather is nice do some
flying.
This month’s edition has a lot of “stuff” in it
including contest reports, tournament report,
tournament banquet report, 2013 Draft
Contest schedule and the NWSS fall board
meeting minutes.
Did you have a hole in your pocket or purse
and lost all of your lose change?
Did your foot get run over when you were
crossing the street?
Do all the water faucets in your house leak?
Is that what’s bothering you?
Well here is something that will brighten
your day.
Do you have trouble removing tape residue?
Well folks I have found that a product called
Goo Gone Spray Gel does real well on
removing that nasty tape residue from wings
and fuselages. Give it a try.
This message brought to you by the makers
of Powder Milk Biscuits always light and
fluffy.
Smooth flying and many thermals to Les
Grammer who is retiring as the NWSS
Scorekeeper and moving to California. Les
is also a NWSS past president, board
member and Cliff Mink Service Award
recipient. We hope that he can make it back
to the NW and fly. Les was the CD at the
Fry Fly for several years, although the last
couple of years the contest was plagued by
the weather. But we will forgive him for
that, and he always had a challenging
contest format that we really liked, or hated
only if we didn’t get our task times.
NWSS Masters Class. What is it? The NWSS Masters Class is a
designation that has been created to honor
those individuals that have shown
themselves to be highly competent in the
areas of flying ability, leadership and
technical aspects of the hobby. To qualify
for the honor of membership in the NWSS
Masters Class, the individual must show
competence in the following three
categories: Competition, Leadership and
Technical.
There are two ways to become a Master
Class flyer; one is by being nominated by
any member of the NWSS with supporting
information and data that shows that the
individual meets the criteria. The second
way is by personally accomplishing the
three year flight tasks/scores and showing
leadership and technical competence.
So if you know a NWSS member that
should be nominated for this honor, please
put together a data package and summit it to
the NWSS Board of Directors for his/her
consideration.
Special thanks to the following for their
contributions to this issue of the Eagle:
Tom Culmsee for the Rippin Thermals
contest report and for the Tournament report
and results.
Kevin Martin for his report on the PASS
Thermal Search Contest.
Lee Urbaniak for his report on the North
Idaho Championships.
Art Boysen for the Fall NWSS Board of
Directors Meeting minutes.
Dave Portwood for the Tournament and
Banquet Pictures.
Last but not least, thanks to all of you that
sent in articles, tips etc. for this year’s
editions of the Eagle. You all make my job
a lot easier to do.

Scientific Explanation: It's the door. The following write up explains so much.
"Ever walk into a room with some purpose
in mind, only to completely forget what that
purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves
are to blame for these strange memory
lapses.
Psychologists at the University of Notre
Dame have discovered that passing through
a doorway triggers what's known as an event
boundary in the mind, separating one set of
thoughts and memories from the next. Your
brain files away the thoughts you had in the
previous room and prepares a blank slate for
the new locale."

ThermalSearch 2012 By Kevin Martin Unlike in 2011 when the Sunday flying was rained out, this year was clear skies for both days.
However, the weather was not without issues. Saturday was very breezy with winds 8-12 mph.
Not too windy to fly but enough to make things interesting. Thermals were building during the
day but more often than not they were torn apart by the breezy conditions. One could be in a
thermal one moment and it would disappear the next. The wind also played havoc with landings,
resulting in lower scores for the day. Fortunately, no planes were damaged in the challenging
conditions, although some flyers had to make the “walk of shame” to retrieve their planes (yours
truly included).
Sunday brought a new weather challenge – heat. The winds blew at 0-2 mph all day. This made
for great thermals and better landing conditions. However, the minimal breeze made for
extremely hot conditions. I spent the entire afternoon with a wet towel on my head. When I left
the field at 5:30 pm the temperature was 96 degrees. It was even hotter when I arrived home.
Again there was no airplane damage and everybody stayed well-hydrated in the heat.
Thanks to the Culmsee family for providing the PASS Sandwich shop and to Terry Erickson for
the use of his electric golf cart. Saturday Standings (5 rounds flown)

Thermal Nirvana
Eugene Report, Contest held August 25th and 26th By Tom Culmsee What a contest. Perfect warm weather, calm winds and wonderful camaraderie added up to an incredible contest. Plenty of
strong lift (a bit of that sink too) gave everyone a chance to sky out on any particular flight. Sunday’s signature Egg Bust
event was won by Dan Fiedler who managed to topple the egg. Of special note was the extra special last flight of Kirby
Parker who passed away earlier in the year. Some of his ashes were collected by Dave Johnson and brought to Eugene in
celebration. Jason Hood placed the ashes in a tube on top of his wing. During launch the ashes spread far and wide backlit in
the morning sun. It was a spectacular and very fitting sight to behold.
Thanks again go to the EGGS crew of Steve Ehrlich, Frank Bell, Ken Eaton and Jason Hood for preparing the field so
beautifully (this year with street signs!) to Scott Goodman for his always magnamous hosting of the fabulous Saturday
evening “Corn Feed” and to EGGS founders Barrett Jones and Dean Rea for moral support. Thanks also to Debbie Culmsee
for scorekeeping, Daniel Fiedler for photography & awards preparation and Sandie Pugh for the design and fabrication of the
Egg Bust Master Award shirt.
Congratulations to all the winners (below) and hope to see everyone again next year.

North Idaho Soaring Championships 2012 By Lee Urbaniak
This year’s edition of the NISC was a bit different. After 30 years at the same site, this year the contest was
not held in North Idaho. Normally held at the beautiful Farragut State Park, it seems there was a bit of jealousy
going on with another group who has envied our hold on the weekend at the park for many years. Park rules say,
“first come first served” so without even discussing it with us we were beaten to the registration for use of the
flying field. A war-bird fly-in was held instead of our contest. Apparently they were moderately successful and
intend to do it again next year. We intend to get our weekend back, but that is a story to be told next year.
This year the NISC was held at our club field on Paradise road in Spokane. The field itself is not as nice as
Farragut but the thermals are better. I want to think that the location change is what affected the turn out as only
ten people showed up. That didn’t make it any easier to take home a trophy. The Expert competition was fierce, the
lead changed 6 times in 12 rounds and ended with the top six pilots within two hundred points of each other. Curtis
Headrick held the lead for four rounds and seemed to be the one to beat, until round ten when he had a bad landing,
enabling others to pass him. The lead changed twice in the last two rounds ending with Portwood as number one.
John Burke, flying steady both days finished strong in second.
Portwood also finished first in Two-Meter. Steve Adams held the lead until the ninth round but David’s
steady flying proved too much. John Burke took third.
Dave Moore and Rex Grace had a pretty good competition in Open Competitor with Dave Moore coming
in first. He found out what a moldie can do for your scores. It’s nice to see someone taken in by the allure of high
performance.
There were no entries in RES.
It was a pretty good contest and next year we hope to be back home at Farragut.
