At The Bridge: James Teit and an Anthropology of Belonging
Acord-ing to W e n d y Wickwire “ E v e r y once in a while, an important historical figure makes an appearance, makes a difference, and then disap-pears from the public record. James Teit (1864–1922) was such a figure. A prolific ethnographer and tireless Indian rights activist, Teit spent four decades helping British Columbia’s Indigenous peoples in their challenge of the settler-colonial assault on their lives and territories. Yet his story is little known...”
Wendy, Professor Emeritus, Depart-ment of History, University of Victoria is no stranger to Merritt & the Nicola Val-ley, with its deep ties to James Teit. She has spent decades researching Teit & his work, and will give a talk about her new book At The Bridge: James Teit and an An-thropology of Belonging on Tues., Oct 15, 7pm at the NVIT Theatre.
Parking in front of the post office
After a backlash at loosing the 4 park-ing spots on Voght St. right in front of the post office, the City has ‘re-evaluat-ed these parking spots and have deter-mined that we can add one handicapped parking space directly in front of Canada Post, while still meeting the safety and traffic flow goals.”
The City has been looking into park-ing & pedestrians on that block since March 2018 when a 92-year old pedes-trian was struck by a pick up truck and killed. The parking spaces were removed after consultation with RCMP, Minis-try of Transportation & Infrastructure & Canada Post, in an effort to improve both vehicle and pedestrian sight lines at this busy intersection and improve the over-all safety of the area.
City: We are always available for questions & feedback and would encour-age residents to reach out to us directly in the future as we would be happy to discuss any City projects and initiatives.”
Congrats to new LNIB Chief & Council...
Chief Stuart Jackson and Council members Bill Bose, Spence Coutlee, Robin Humphrey, Connie Joe, William Sandy, Lucinda Seward, and Aaron Su-mexheltza — elected after Lower Nicola Indian Band’s election on Saturday.

Languages A Swiss man, looking for directions, pulls up at a bus stop where two Americans are waiting. “Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?” he asks. The two Americans just stare at him. “Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?” he tries. The two continue to stare. “Parlare Italiano?” No response. “Hablan ustedes Espanol?” Still nothing. The Swiss guy
drives off, extremely disgusted. The first American turns to the second and says, “Y’know, maybe we should learn a foreign language.” “Why?” says the other. “That guy knew four
languages, and it didn’t do him any good.”
