Sta bear awareThis year, natural forage was good

with our long wet spring, but the dry hotsummer may have reduced the availabil-ity of natural foods.

In Merritt, for example, there wereabout 13 calls to the reporting line re-garding bears as of the end of August, said Emily Lomas, WildSafeBC commu-nity co-ordinator. Compare that to theyear previous, when there were 60 callsin the same time frame.

Now, bears are entering the hyperpha-

gia phase of their yearly cycle, a timewhen they can take in up to 20,000 calo-ries in a single day, to create great storesof fat to make it through their winter hi-

    bernation.Garbage, unpicked fruit, bird feeders,

pet food, outdoor freezers, and smalllivestock all become targets for bears.Preventing them from accessing these at-tractants will help to keep the wildlifewild and communities safe.

Aspen Planers shtdown for wood dst

Last week, the Vancouver Sun reported:"WorkSafeBC took the rare step of orderinga BC sawmill to stop work because wooddust had built up to levels it considered tocreate a risk of fire or explosion.

The buildup of wood dust at the AspenPlaners sawmill in Merritt took place de-spite several industry-wide regulatorywarnings and significant public attentionafter 4 workers were killed in explosionslast year at 2 sawmills in northern BC.

WorkSafeBC lifted the order, but told thecompany it must provide a written planthat specifies the steps it will take to ensureit follows the regulations and lays out itsown dust-control program. That plan mustincluded consideration of new equipment.

The Vancouver Sun reported that ofabout 150 sawmills inspected betweenOctober 2012 and May 2013, 20% werecited for wood dust accumulations thatposed a fire or explosion risk.

The rare stop-work order follows therevelation 2 months ago outlined in

WorkSafeBC inspection reports thatsome BC sawmills were still strugglingto properly clean up wood dust.

A WorkSafeBC official said the indus-try needs to get to a point where they aremanaging combustible dust on an equalfooting with other aspects of safety and with plant productivity.

He stressed the agency will not relax its emphasis on combustible dust, and plansto revisit Aspen Planers and other sawmills this fall. Source: Vancouver Sun
