Merritt Hospice is all about support-ing those who are facing a life-threaten-ing illness and their families, as well assupporting those who are grieving.
One of the aspects of end-of-life sup-port begins long before the final journey:Advance Care Planning, which involvesthinking about your values & wishes andletting others know your future healthand personal care preferences. In theevent that you become incapable of con-senting or refusing treatment your desig-nated person will know what to do.
Advance Care Planning is for every-one regardless of age or state of health. Itinvolves 5 steps: 1) thinking about yourvalues, wishes & beliefs; 2) learningabout different medical procedures &what they can and can’t do; 3) decidingwho will be your substitute decision-maker; 4) talking about your wishes withyour loved ones & your doctor; 5) record-ing (writing down) your wishes.
During Hospice-Palliative Caremonth, visit the Merritt & District Hos-pice Society’s display table at the MerrittLibrary and pick up literature on ad-vance care planning. Join Merritt Hos-pice volunteers on May 3, 17 & 31,10am-noon at the Library for coffee andgoodies to start a conversation about hos-pice, supportive care & advance careplanning. FMI call 280-4040.
