Mike Dandridge, who has served on the Merriott Village Hall Committee in a variety of roles and was a trustee for 39 years, has been awarded Trustee of the Year 2017 by the Community Council for Somerset. He still serves on the Hall committee, representing the Merriott Short Matt Bowls Club.
The current Trustees congratulated Mike on his well-deserved award and are extremely grateful to him for all his hard work and for his contribu-tion to making the Hall such an excellent village asset.
Repairs have recently been completed by Mr. Geoff Gale to the front portico which had suffered damage to the mouldings on each side
of the arch. The Trustees are very grateful to the Merriott Heritage Trust for a grant of £1,000 towards the cost of these repairs.
The Hall hosted a quiz night in November which was a great success raising £493 towards further improvements. On the same evening representa-tives from the local Co-op presented Mrs Rosemary Evans, Hall Treasurer, with a cheque for £993.87, being half the contribution of dividends from sale of Co-op goods over the last 6 months. The Hall was one of 2 charities in Merriott to benefit in this way. During the autumn all the remaining windows in the Hall have been re-placed with double glazed units by the Window-Man in Crewkerne. By the time this is being read, improvements to the men’s toilets in the Hall are also planned to be completed. John Bowman

Merriott Parish Council, in conjunction with South Somerset District Council, is conducting a Housing Needs Survey for the village. This aims to identify the needs for future housing in the village – what types, how much and…... WHERE?
We need you to help by stating what you and your family need and want to see here in the coming years. The survey form is included in this month’s Merriott Messenger and as many people as possible should reply to get the clearest picture possible of what should be included in the SSDC Local Plan.
Even if you don’t intend to move in the near future it would still be helpful to have this indicated on the survey – simply complete Section 1 if this applies to you. In Section 2, the Council is particularly looking to hear from older residents – maybe those thinking about downsizing or re-locating in the village. And finally, Section 3 deals with Affordable Housing requirements – please
complete this part if you, or someone in your family, needs a home here.
The surveys must be returned to SSDC in the pre-paid envelopes also included in this months’ Messenger – alternatively the survey is also avail-able online at http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/Merriott/. All replies will be confidential and no individual will be identifiable from data published.
All feedback should be returned by 30th March 2018 to South Somerset District Council for processing, (no personal information will be seen by MPC).

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Monthly Markets at Merriott Social Club have stopped for the time being. However, do please keep a look out for posters as we may have the occasional fundraising event in the future.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Markets over the three years they have been running and raising funds for various local charities. We will especially miss all the friends we made with the lovely regular stallholders.

For the 3rd successive year the Carols & Classics Concert, held on the 16th December at All Saints Church, Merriott was a sell-out. An audience of 210 were treated to a range of classical and festive arrangements by The Fisher Sinfonia, including solo performances of cello, organ and piano. Together with string musicians, the Sinfonia also performed as quintets, quartets and trios and the festive arrangements, in particular “Sleigh Ride”, had the audience giving a standing ovation.
It was announced by Joseph Fisher, the founder of Fisher Sinfonia, that next year, the 10th concert, will be the last of the current series. Over the nine years the Carols & Classics concerts have raised signifi-cant funds for the Church Fabric and this year over £1,200 was raised. Joseph reiterated the fact that it has become extremely difficult to co-ordinate the musicians, who have commitments with UK orchestras over the Christmas period. He promised, however, that the final Carols and Classics concert will be something special.
The Rector, Bob Hicks, closed the evening with praise for the musicians on their outstanding performances, and thanked the audience for their support, together with the organisers and helpers who made the evening another great success.

Merriott School opened its doors after school on the 7th December to hold its own Great Exhibition.
Pupils had been studying design and architecture as part of the whole school topic ‘Grand Designs’. As part of this learning sequence, the children and staff prepared an exhibition for parents and other family members to come and see their final achievements. The school was full to bursting with proud children showing their parents their work and models. Children acted as exhibition guides to show their families around the different exhibits.
The cross curricular topic has seen the children making links between their different lessons under this common theme of ‘Grand Designs’. Highlights of the topic have included designing and making bridge structures, younger pupils creating buildings and earlier in the term
re-enacting the Great Fire of London. Older pupils have studied a wonderful design-inspired book called ’Iggy Peck Architect’ written by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts. The children wrote letters to the illustrator and are hoping for replies.
“We have worked hard on developing our curriculum this year and make the learning for children more meaningful
and also inspire them to look at career paths they may not have considered. English and Maths is so important for the children, but by linking it to other sub-jects has been really appreciated by the children who have loved learning about all aspects of design,” commented Philip Smith headteacher.
The school is now planning its next learn-ing sequence ‘Elements’ - a geographical and science focused topic. This sequence will hopefully include educational visits to Wookey Hole and the Magdalen Project to further enthuse the children. The Village First School is currently showing prospective parents around for children starting school in September 2018. Interested parents are encouraged to contact the school office and have a look around the school and feel the learning buzz for themselves.

Merriott Childcare - Charlotte Hamlin We are a registered childcare provider based in Merriott supported by a qualified staff team.
We strive to provide flexible, professional child-care in a safe home-from-home environment .
All children have the right to be understood as individuals and given opportunities for imagina-tion, creativity and play. The setting is filled with toys, dressing-up, crafts and a garden filled with climbing equipment, space to explore allowing children to discover new skills. Children are involved in animal care enabling them to have an understanding of the animal’s needs and to respect them. We regularly visit local community facilities including the library,
swimming, small holdings and other local attractions, including the village café. On a regular basis we have outside providers who visit us, bringing their individual skills/activities into the setting.
Our opening times are 06.00 – 18.30 Monday to Friday. We aim to be as flexible as possible and ad-hoc childcare is available.
We provide healthy meals and snacks or your children can bring their own. We provide school runs to both Merriott Pre-School and Merriott First School on a daily basis.
We accept early years funding.
Recently, at the Taunton warehouse of Raft (refugeeaidfrom taunton.org.uk), I heard the story of one Syrian family from a volunteer who had received a phone call from a friend in Devon about a fellow worshipper in the friend's church, and in this way became involved with a young man, his wife and children.
Mathai arrived in Devon in 2014 (with a visa) to join other family members already living there. He found work, hoping his family would be accepted too. In 2015 conditions for them were so dangerous that he returned to Syria to rescue them. However, because their home was bombed and his wife, Mariam, feared being trafficked for prostitution, she and her young children had fled as refugees. Mathai followed them. Happi-
ly, they were reunited during the hazard-ous journey across Europe, reaching Boulogne on the French coast. By this time, Mathai's visa had expired and his circumstances changed. The Raft volunteer was contacted to help this destitute family.
It was arranged that a small caravan fitted with a log-burning stove for heating and cooking, supplied by volun-teers to the then Calais camp, would be allocated to the family. Raft then deliv-ered essential equipment, some donated and some bought with donated money. Knowing the children’s ages meant that appropriate clothing and small toys could be acquired. In gratitude Mariam offered a meal to the volunteers from their lim-ited supplies. While still in the camp
Mathai was kidnapped by traffickers to Germany from where he struggled back to Calais.
The Calais camp was emptied and destroyed in Oct. 2016 and eventually the family was legally settled in East Anglia. However, hundreds of thousands of other families still exist in refugee camps in the Middle East and Europe and others do not even have that security. Charities still need donations of good, unwanted items and of money to buy essentials. Please donate to Raft and please attend the next Refugee Support Group fundraising event: Friday 23rd

After a quiet Christ-mas and New Year we are holding our first visit of 2018 on the 22 January at 2.00pm in the Blake Room in the Village Hall as usual. For those readers who would like to find out
more of what Marquetry is all about, or those who were given a Marquetry Kit as a Christmas present, we will be very pleased to give help and advice to them. Please form an orderly queue!!! This is the time of the year where we get busy preparing for making items for sale for the likes of the Spring Yandles Show (13/14 April - do come and see us) and also getting ready our entries for the Marquetry Society's annual International Exhibition and Competi-tion. We are always ready to welcome new members to our Group, of any age or either sex.
One of our members from the now defunct Mosterton Group has now re-joined us after a long period of ill health and his return is very welcome.
The Full Membership fee is £50.00 per year with a sliding scale for new members (plus 50p for a cup of tea and a biscuit!!) and material and equipment cost are very reasonable. Do come and see us!!

L o o k i n g b a c k … … Shortly after the end of WW2 the girls who worked in the shirt factory in Abbey Street, Crewkerne took part in a carnival parade. There were four or five groups,
each group representing a branch of the armed forces. I recall the occasion quite well as my two older sisters were on parade, as were many other Merriott girls. I believe they made their own uni-forms, no doubt with the support and encouragement of the factory management.

We have lived in Boozer Pit for nearly six years now. We fell in love with our
little cottage and were lucky enough to move into it in March 2012. The very first night in our new home we heard it - the midnight express came thundering through and the whole house shook. We lay there wondering what on earth it was! Actually it’s not a Midnight Express at all. It’s a vehicle that comes through Boozer Pit between 3.00 and 4.00am every night.
I have become quite curious as to what sort of vehicle it is and would like to ask the driver to slow down somewhat, to stop our house from shaking! It has been suggested that I set my alarm clock to wake me at 3.00am so I can see who it is, but I feel that is a little extreme, so I am appealing to the people of Merriott and ask if anyone knows the driver of the 3.00am Express that comes thundering through our village every night? If you do could you please ask them to slow down when they come round the corner in Boozer Pit. Suzy Langdon

Following the “Dear Editor” feature on Merriott road signs in the last issue of the Messenger, we have received a number of responses which we publish here and copies will be forwarded to the Parish Council.
Dear Messenger,
I was somewhat confused by the comments of the Parish Council Chairman in respect of the parish boundary name signs.
Whilst I agree with him that arguably there is too much signage on our roads, to consign Merriott to the mysteries of the Satnav system, as he suggests, is to do our village a great disservice. I am proud to be a resident of this village and would very much welcome the installation of village name plates which reflect this great community.
The fact that the majority of the buildings in our village are constructed in ham stone surely makes this one of the local 'ham stone' villages and therefore deserving of some suit-able ham stone signage. I understand that there could be a cost issue but surely a pleasing alternative could be found.

I agree completely with Les Thomas that it is a shame
that Merriott signs do not appear as they used to, signs in
general of any kind are useful reference points for drivers,
a large number of people still prefer to use a map and a
finger to find their way around (passengers obviously) not
everyone uses sat navs, even if they are fitted as
standard equipment.
As for lumps of ham stone probably not, but a nice piece
of ham stone cut with the name of Merriott carved in by a
traditional stone mason whose ancestors probably lived in
Merriott would look very nice on every entrance point to
Merriott.
Merriott has a strong link with ham hill, not only is it quite
close but we are also fortunate to have a large number of
ham stone properties in the village. This village over the
years has produced some excellent stone masons and
probably will continue to do so in the future, so we
definitely have a connection with ham stone in the village.
As for the new traffic calming methods what a waste of
time and money, the current ones do not work, they
encourage drivers from outside the village who are just
passing through to just speed between each point in
order to beat the car coming the other way, there has
been more accidents and near misses in Broadway since
the traffic calming methods were put in place then they
were prior to the measures being put in.
I have myself witnessed many accidents at the various
pinch points, road rage and even a car on its roof outside
the Texaco garage, and the newly installed measure out-
side the new development in Broadway, the developers at
that time held a village meeting and we were told that the
existing pinch point would be removed and in their words
a raised table would be put in place, but what we got is a
long narrow pinch point which is causing traffic to back
up, sometimes past Broadway stores.
At the original village meeting prior to the traffic calming
measures being installed the majority at that meeting
favoured speed cameras at the top and bottom of the
village, even a third one in the middle of the village, one,
two or three could even be dummies, but this would still
slow the traffic down, I drive thousand of miles throughout
the year through towns and villages all over the country
and wherever you see cameras you see drivers reduce
their speed.
I hope in future before any other traffic calming are
thought about and put in place we have a village meeting
in the village hall where the people of this village can
discuss the matter openly, but first perhaps the Parish
Council could fund the highways department to repair the
roads around the village.

Dear Editor
Regarding the recent letters about village signage:
It is somewhat arrogant to say that “almost every-
one has a satnav today, making all direction and
place name signs redundant”.
Finger posts have been an attractive feature of our
road system for a great many years, and are still
useful for walkers, cyclists and us old fashioned
drivers! It’s a great pity that they can’t be painted
and maintained properly
As for “Welcome to Merriott” signs, it is ludicrous
to suggest that Merriott is not a hamstone village
and we should look around and celebrate our local
heritage.
