Introduction

Even the magic of the MERLIN™ communications system sometimes fails. The problemmay be a user error, installation problem, or faulty component. Usually you can correct theproblem on the spot without returning any equipment for maintenance exchange.

The Service and Maintenance Manual: Models 206, 410, and 820 is intended for use by boththe customer and the service technicians. This troubleshooting manual is divided into fourparts:

Functional Overview describes each communications system component and its use.

Isolating and Correcting Troubles includes step-by-step procedures to help you isolate aproblem to a user error or a specific component. Most procedures require no tools. A fewprocedures require a screwdriver or a basic Touch-Tone or rotary telephone (a PowerFailure Transfer Telephone will work).

CIBs includes copies of customer instruction booklets shipped with the components. TheCIBs describe the functional features and installation of each component.

Index lists problems, features, and components. It will help you find the information youneed quickly.

MAJOR SYSTEM COMPONENTS1. Control unit: The control unit is the heart of the MERLIN system. It provides the

power and intelligence for all voice terminals as well as the connection between voiceterminals and outside lines. Program memory for the MERLIN system resides in thecontrol unit. The model number of the control unit determines its capacity:

● Model 206 control unit has a capacity of 2 outside lines and 6 voice terminals.

● Model 410 control unit has a capacity of 4 outside lines and 10 voice terminals.

● Model 820 control unit has a capacity of 8 outside lines and 20 voice terminals.

3.

Network interface: The network interface connects the control unit and the outsidelines. The two most common network interfaces are the one-line (RJ11) and two-line(RJ14) interfaces. However, other network interfaces may be used (see the InstallationGuide: Models 206 and 410 and the Installation Guide: Model 820).

Jack field: The jack field provides the connections between the control unit and thewiring to the voice terminals. The jack field may consist of either jack panel boxes ormodular jacks mounted near the control unit. (However, in some systems, the voiceterminals plug directly into the control unit using modular voice terminal cords andextension cords.) Optional attachments (extra alerts, paging systems, etc.) may alsoconnect to the control unit through the jack field.

5.

Modular jack: Each voice terminal wiring run from the jack field terminates in a modularjack at the voice terminal location. Every voice terminal has a separate modular jack.

Voice terminal (MERLIN system telephone): The voice terminal provides basictelephone functions as well as access to the advanced feature software residing in thecontrol unit.

MERLIN system voice terminals may be installed in a near-by building by usingOutdoor Wiring Protection Units. Contact your equipment supplier for more information.

Basic Touch-Tone and rotary telephones may also be used as off-premises telephoneswith the MERLIN system using the optional Off-Premises Telephone Interface toconnect them. In that case, off-premises telephones access system features by meansof dial codes.

The following pages describe in detail the control units (by model), optional cartridges andline/voice terminal modules, voice terminals, and accessories.

(151A) MUSIC-ON-HOLD/PAGING CARTRIDGE TYPE II (6102)

This cartridge (Figure 1) is intended for usewith the communications system, and pro-vides three functions:

When properly connected to a●

user-provided 2-watt, 8-ohm mu-sic source, it provides music tooutside callers who are placed onHOLD.

When properly connected to aloudspeaker paging system, it per-mits users to make paging an-nouncements over the loud-speaker from their voice termi-nals.

It can also provide backgroundmusic over the loudspeaker pag-ing system.

Figure 1

“T” and “R” Terminals

The “T” and “R” terminals on the car-tridge connect to the “telephone” input onyour paging system. The connection allowsyou to access the paging system via the in-tercom from any voice terminal. The “T”and “R” terminals are a 600-ohm, dry bal-anced output; therefore, it is not criticalwhich of the two terminals on the pagingunit is connected to “T” and which is con-nected to “R” (dc-offset voltage is as-sumed to be 0 volts).

Paging Signal Switch

The “Paging Signal” switch provides thefollowing options:

ON: When switched to the “ON”position, all paging announce-ments are preceded by a tone.

1.

2.

OFF: No tone precedes the pag-ing announcement over the loud-speakers.

Control Terminals

The “1” and “2” terminals on the car-tridge can be used for signaling the pagingsystem when a page is in progress (for ex-ample, to turn off background music). The“1” and “2” terminals are switched con-tacts that are normally open but becomeclosed when a page is initiated. A maximumof 40 volts, 0.25 amperes can be appliedacross the terminals.

Background Music Volume Con-trol

This control is used to adjust the volume ofyour background music. Turning the screwclockwise increases the volume, turning itcounterclockwise decreases the volume.

Note: You may also have volumecontrols on your speakers andpaging system.

Music Terminals

These terminals when properly connectedto a music source, allow you to have musicon hold, and if desired, background musicon your paging system. “M1” and “M2”are a dry balanced 8-ohm input; therefore,it is not critical which terminal on the mu-sic source is connected to “M1” and whichis connected to “M2” (the dc-offset is as-sumed to be 0 volts).
