Most warranties will be found in the backpages in small print. The Merlin warranty,like the system itself, is innovative interms of water treatment products. A GEwarranty has true meaning, one can beconfident GE will be in a position tohonour this warranty in years to comeand years is what is on offer. Three yearswith residential use and one year in acommercial application (defined asgreater than 75 lpd).

Like the warranty, certification is nothollow, the Merlin has been testedaccording to NSF/ANSI 58 for reductionof substances listed below. Theconcentration of the indicated substancesin water entering the system was reducedto a concentration less than or equal tothe permissible limit for water leaving thesystem, as specified in NSF/ANSI 58. The substances are: Arsenic, Barium,Cadmium, Chromium (Hexavalent),Chromium (Trivalent), Copper, Fluoride,Lead, Nitrate, Nitrite, Radium 226/228,Selenium and TDS.

In designing the Merlin, the complex assemblyof conventional systems has been eliminatedresulting in a simplistic leak-free unit. Membranes,cartridge and all componentry locate into amanifold that makes the Merlin less than twocubic feet in size, with just three simple push-fitting connections (even these are colour andsymbol coded for absolute simplicity).

The Merlin system incorporates two, new-technology, high-flow membrane elements inseries to produce an average of 1.9 lpm ofpurified water. With the concentrate from oneelement being channelled through the second,the waste water is reduced by approximately75% compared to conventional systems.

Spot-free

Normal water supplycontains on average 300ppm (parts per million) totaldissolved solids (TDS), it isthese mineral salts thatcause spotting in manywash applications. As rinsewater dries it evaporatesinto the atmosphere,anything that is not waterremains deposited on the

surface thus creating aspot that impairs the finishon paint, glass, metals, etc.

By reducing TDS to below50 ppm a spot-free rinsewater is achieved. With theMerlin’s average 93% TDSreduction an output of20ppm is typical.

Car Wash

The hard work with a chamois is athing of the past when rinsing a washedvehicle with spot free rinse water.

Unlike many cheap disposable units the Merlin provides continuous purewater normally requiring annual notweekly maintenance.

Laboratory

Pure water systems in laboratories areessential but often expensive. Using theMerlin and post deionisation treatment,18 megohm water can be achieved withlow TOC, organic, bacteria andparticulate counts – suitable as primarygrade, deionised and general laboratorygrade water.

The Merlin’s capacity to produce over 2.5 lpm of purified water makes it ideal for commercial water applications. In addition with a few simple push fittings,capacity can be increased to run Merlins in parallel, likewise multiple dispensingoutlets can be created with a similar pushfitting arrangement after the Merlin.

Post treatment with deionisation optionsenable consistent quality up to 18 megohmeconomically.

Window wash

Recent health and safetyregulations have encouraged‘pole-fed’ window cleaningsystems. Such equipment notonly requires ultra-pure wateras an aggressive cleaningagent but also high-gradespot-free rinse water.

This high-grade water eliminatesthe need for chemicals andthe associated health andsafety issues. The Merlin’s highproduction and portability,along with the optional DIaccessories, make it ideal forthis growing application.

Ironing

The Merlin removes calcium, iron and rustfrom water. When used in an iron there isno scaling, improving the iron’s efficiency.The result is no calcium, iron or rustdeposits to damage and stain materials.

Dentist

Contamination-free and bacteria-freewater is produced by the Merlin making it ideal for dentistry rinse and instrument-fed requirements. Instrument autoclave isalso economic with this multi-purposepure water source.

Battery Top-up

Deionised water is economically produced afterthe Merlin with post treatment. This finalpolishing stage can be a separate outlet whilstthe standard reverse osmosis outlet continuesto be used for other applications.

Renal

Renal dialysis equipment is fed with reverse osmosis quality water; within hospitals this is usuallya large central system. To aid many patients todaydialysis can be conducted from home where theMerlin is capable of delivering the required feed water quality without the bulk and cost of traditionalwater treatment systems.

Glass/Metal Wash

The Merlin reduces TDS levels so mineraldeposits are eliminatedon product surfaces.Beneficial to glassmanufacturers,commercial cutlery anddrinking glass-washingbusinesses.

Plants

Like humans the consumption of contamination has detrimentaleffects on household plants. Many plants benefit from increasedgrowth rate, durability and less wilt when using pure water.Yellow leaves, brown spots and dull leaves are also avoided withthe removal of limescale.

Aquatic

Tap water commonly containschlorine or chloramines asbacterial disinfectants, whicheven at low levels can be deadlyto fish. Similarly tap waternormally has excessivequantities of nutrients such asnitrate and phosphate, bothalgal nutrients that can causemajor problems. Copper andlead traces from piping areharmful and deadly toinvertebrates. Other heavymetals, pesticides, selenium and fluoride are all undesirablecontamination for fish keepers.The Merlin addresses all theseissues with the exception of the chloramines where anadditional chloramine filtercartridge is required.

Merlin Booster PumpFor lower pressure and/or lowtemperature applications, apressure activated boosterpump, conforming to IP65, forthe Merlin is available to improvesystem performance.

Installation is simple with 1/2” in-line, push-fitting connections.The pump will automaticallyturn on whenever the Merlin is producing water and offwhen not.

The Merlin booster pump is avariable speed pump designedto produce water pressure upto 80psi, regardless of the inletpressure.

High Purity Flush SystemFor highly demanding applicationsthat require an alternativemethod to lessen the effects ofsalt diffusion, a Merlin flush kit isavailable. This kit includes asmall tank that connects to the1/4” push-fitting on the Merlin.The kit forces permeate water toflush the high salt concentratewater from the membraneelements. By doing this, thesystem rests with low saltconcentrations on both sides ofthe elements. Because low saltconcentrations remain on eachside of the membrane, saltdiffusion is greatly reduced. Thekit uses approximately 0.7gallons (2.5 litres) of permeatewater to flush the membraneelements each time it operates.

Pre FiltrationA pre-filter housing with 1/2”push-fitting connections issimply installed prior to theMerlin. In commercial and highturbidity applications a GEOsmonics 5 micron pre-filter isrecommended (code ROSave5-9 7/8”). This inexpensivecartridge will protect andprolong the life of the moreexpensive carbon filter andmembranes.

Where reduction of chloraminesis required the same filterhousing can be used with acartridge (code Chlorplus 10)designed for 45,000 litrereduction from 2ppm to 0.5ppm.

For commercial or wellapplications where there is a0ppm chlorine feed the pre-carbon filter can bereplaced with a 10 micronparticulate cartridge.

Post De-IonisationThe reverse osmosis element of the Merlinreduces TDS levels at an average rejection of93%, typically outputting 20ppm. Deionisationis most cost effective at this level and thereare many DI resins available in cartridge andcylinder format for varying degrees oftreatment. In cartridge format, three sizes areavailable. All 3 kits come complete with 3/8”push-fitting housing, wall bracket, spannerand FDA compliant DI cartridge to produce 16 megohm water that has low TOC levelsdue to post production steps.

The Merlin is a complete system ready to install out of the box.The only extra fitting required will be a feed connection,typically a 15mm x 15mm x 1/2” tee with stop valve, althoughthere are many variations dependent on pipe size, locationand preference. Installation should comply with the localplumbing codes. For installation of extra taps, running Merlinin parallel and other custom installations a range of simplepush fittings and tubing is available. Call the Merlin helpline orcontact your installer for advice on the required fittings forcustomisation.

Push-fitting ConnectionsSea Tech fittings connect multiple materials(copper, CPVC, PEX, CDPE, HDPE) withoutthe need for special tools and can besimply made into manifolds.

Measure water qualityTo measure water quality output a TDSmeter is recommended.

Multi Location Extra Mini Tap (above)

With the high production rate of theMerlin and low pressure loss across the membranes the pure water outletcan be fed to multiple locations. Fit a ‘T’piece (3/8 x 3/8 x 1/4) in-line and connecta mini tap that operates at the push of alever. Mini tap comes complete with 1/4”tubing attached.

As standard, the Merlin system is complete with a mini tap that is generally positioned on the side of a sink andoperated by depressing a small lever to dispense water as required. One of four stylish ‘Tri-flow’ taps can be used toeliminate the need for the standard mini tap. The ‘Tri-flow’ range operates as a normal mixer tap but has a third handleto dispense pure water from the same spout. Even though pure water is dispensed from the same spout it is througha separate nozzle so as not to be contaminated by unpurified water. The standard ‘Tri-flows’ have a chrome finish withoptional matt chrome and brushed nickel.
