BACKGROUND/LEAD-IN

"NARROW is full of recognisable daily routines. They are funny because they are difficult to perform in limited space and become a cramped and frenetic carry-on." PRE-PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES

Activity: Conflict & Resolution Resolving arguments in a small space

1. Have the class work in pairs. 2. Give each pair one of the following scenarios or something similar (you may like to

introduce props)

Simple options

• Character A breaks character B’s favourite cup, they have a small argument, then they clean up the mess together

• Character A makes tea for them and Character B, they drink the tea together and then wash up the cups

More difficult options

• Character A is playing loud music and character B is trying to read a book for homework, they have a small argument, then then come up with a solution

• Character A has a pet spider, character B is afraid of spiders, Character A is playing with the spider in the same room as Character B. What happens?

3. Encourage the children to act out the scenes, developing them as much as possible 4. Next place chairs with their backs facing inwards to make a small square enclosure 5. Have each pair enter the small space and act out their scenario a second time but now in

the more confined space

NARROW BEFORE YOU GO

Pre-performance activities for the classroom

Activity: Group Reflection

1. Have everyone sit in a circle 2. Talk about the difference between their scenario in open space and in a small space

§ What felt different? § What was difficult in the small space? § What was easy? § How did you feel emotionally in the big space v small space? § How did they feel physically in the big space v small space? § Would it be difficult to live in a very small space all the time? § How would you have to act/behave if this was how you lived?

POST-PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES

AFTER YOUR TRIP Post-show activities for the classroom

Activity: Group Reflection • After the performance discuss what they saw and heard.

• What was familiar? What was confusing or surprising?

• What did they see that was interesting?

• What was their favourite part?

• What part didn’t they understand or enjoy?

Activity: Drawing • Using large sheets of paper and paints or pencils have the students create a drawing

from their memory of the performance. They should use the edge of the page as the

walls of the space the characters were acting in.

• Take images of the classes work and email them to [email protected], we would love to

see them!
