BILLY BARTONThe anonymous listing of circus artists in TV Guideand in other sources, as pole climbers, animal demon-strators, etc., is outrageous; a slap in the face todedicated and accomplished performers. These artists

are not household names it is true, but neither are the majorityare listed.

Thestory making the rounds thatKAY FRANCIS HANNEFORD has can-cer of the throat is, unfortun-ately, true. A drastic change has beenmade in RBBB's Blue Unit route.Hollywood (Fla) has been dropped(the building isn't ready) andnow they'll open a day early atJacksonville.

A Florida-based show willnot get off the ground this yearThe problem is money and reportsare their agent was left holdingthe bag.

Monroe (La) will get RBBBRed Unit on June 26-27, althoughfinal contracts haven't been set

The real story on the Kingtitle is simple when the factsare known. It seems Floyd Kingtransferred the title to his wifeseveral years ago and she leas-ed it to the McCloskey organiza-tion, where the contract is stillvalid. The dates set for the newCristiani outfit have reportedlybeen sold to Hoxie Bros.

CFA'r Earl Allen (Sikeston,Mo.) has been ill since Dec. 18and spent some time in the hospi-tal> An investigation by thisreporter shows that an agent wasnot the "heavy" as reported by•one show, but rather that theshow has left numerous unpaidbills everywhere.

Holiday Hippodrome is setfor Monroe (La) next month andShowtime Follies comes in June.

. ..byERIC WILSONMay Wirth Remembers

Her favorite horses steadily moved around circus rings inhundreds of towns in every state and foreign countries and petitMay Wirth danced and somersaulted on their broad rosined backs.

That was between 1912 and 1928 on Barnum & Bailey and Ring-ling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey, where the Australian girl of fivefeet and 110 pounds was a center ring performer. Pink bow in herhair, she captivated crowds everywhere.

They called her the world'sbest woman rider for she didtricks which were never duplica-ted - before or since. And evenafter all these years, her repu-tation for skill and daringstill stands.

May retired as a performerat the age of 52 years. Now shelives in Sarasota, Fla., whereshe is enshrined in the CircusHall of Fame.

She started learning her actat the age of six years and wasa star performer as a teenager. Her tumbling skill was inheritedfrom her father and her teachersdeveloped her ability.

"Practice is the way to suc-cess. I loved to practice, toperfect, old tricks and inventnew ones. I think my horses gottired before I did," May said.

She says it takes a longtime to train a horse properly. The shocK of the rider's jumpsis hard on their kidneys andthey must become accustomed tothe feet pounding down on them -even the feet of a 110 Ib. girl.

The Wirth family lived inhalf a rail car and had a dress-ing top of its own. Everythingwas first class for such a prom-inent family.

"Joe, my best horse, workedwith me eleven years and died atthe age of 17. He was just likea family member. We loved himand I think he loved us," shesaid.

As the RBBB trains touredthe nation, they went to townsof all sizes. The 8,000 capacitybig top was full much of thetime. Those were the days beforeTV and other distractions sopeople came from miles around, drawn by the litho saturationwork of the billing crews.

May recalls a little Texastown where the crowd was mostlycowboys and Indians. The cowboystied their horses to tent ropesand the Indians moved in withtheir teepees.

"The western riders reallyappreciated our act for we didthings with horses they neverimagined," said May.

Caltech CircusJan 31-Feb 1 Pasadena, Cal.

Looks almost as if a "circus war" is developing here inOhio with several shows all scheduled in close together. The SovietCircus played Cincinnati on Jan. 14-19 and Ringling-Barnum had bigads in the local papers during that time advertising their upcomingMarch 24-28 engagement in the same building.

The Syrian Shrine Circus will play Cincinnati on March 16-21while the Dayton Shrine Circus, just 50 miles away, is set forMarch 24-28. The real battle will be between the Syrian ShrineCircus and Ringling-Barnum - just three davs apart.

The Soviet Circus playedhere in the 17,000 seat River-front Coliseum. However, the bigarena was divided in half by ahuge curtain hanging across thecenter and thereby cutting theseating to 8500. The show was in-teresting, but tended to be abit boring and overlong.

Local papers praised theperformance and attendence wasabout 5,000 per show. Members ofthe John Robinson CFA Tent wentto the circus as a group and thebuilding even advertised thisfact on their flashing signboard.

Of special interest to thecircus fan was the fact one coulcsee behind the dividing curtain. Thus it was possible to watchthe performance, along with anopportunity to see backstage andwatch performers warming up,resting and caring for the var-ious animals.

,by BILLY BARTON

The Circus has been a downtrodden show-business "minority"for too long — the poor relation of the arts living on the wrongside of the tracks. The time has come to liberate an Image forwhich we must hold ourselves directly responsible. It is easier togrouse about Public Opinion than it is to remedy the situation.

Irreverant public behavior, rudeness, dirtiness, sloppiness,rip-offs, rag-bag operations, hit and run promotions, fly-by-night producers and inferiorperformances all contribute tothe decline of an otherwise hon-orable Estate and leads to un-favorable Press.

The urgency to upgrade allfacets of the industry is essen-tial as well as the need toeliminate the unscrupulouswhose unorthodox activity leavesbarren territory and angry citi-zenry behind for others to face.

The obligation to espousethat which is Good, to be ever-vigilant against that which isBad, falls to each and everyone of us. How successful weare in curing the ills of ourprofession depends upon ourwillingness to face up to thetruth and then act with deter-mination to eradicate the malig-nity.

MAY HIRTH (Continued)

Brooklyn seemed to be a badluck city. Her horse shied andMay's foot caught in the stirrupThe horse circled the ring threetimes as May's head banged thering curb. Finally the horsewent onto the track and May'smother stopped the animal andextracted the semi-consciousgirl.

Of the Ringling brothers,Mr. Charlie (always called that)was a favorite. Friendly andtalkative, he took an interestin everyone. Brother John was acolder person, often formidable. He was quick to criticize.

May has many fond memoriesof the old days. She says theshows of her era were best.

"Now there is too much gla-mour and night club sparkle. Toomany 'tournaments' (now calledspecs). But most of the acts areexcellent. This year I saw someEuropean men do tricks like minebut no women tried them," Maydeclared.

In Madison Square Gardenwhere the show has opened formany years, there are photo gal-leries of great performers, sports athletes and circus stars.

"My picture is there. Butit is with the athletes' photos, not with the circus people. Idon't know whether to be flatter-ed or annoyed. After all, I wasall circus even though some ofmy feats were athletic," saidMay.
