VETERANS DAY MASS
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11 AT 12:00 NOON
The origins of Veterans Day are rooted in the celebration of what was once known as Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919, exactly one year after the end of the first World War. In proclaiming the holiday he said, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
The holiday is observed specifically on November 11th to signify the end of the major hostilities of World War I, which officially ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. An Act approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November each year a legal holiday- a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as Armistice Day. At the urging of veterans service organizations, the Act of 1938 was amended in 1954 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans,” representing a day to honor American veterans of all wars. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation on October 8, 1954.
The observance of this federal holiday is honored with celebrations of all sorts. Cities and towns across our country honor our dedicated service men and women with parades, special services, and firework displays. Each special celebration is held to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Here in our own parish, Our Lady of Mercy shows honor to our veterans with a special Mass dedicated to all who have served. At this beautiful patriotic liturgy we will recognize all five branches of the military- Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The celebration wouldn’t be complete without patriotic songs such as the Battle Hymn of the Republic and the Armed Forces Medley.
We ask for your prayers for all members of the armed forces, especially those who are serving from our parish. OUR VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE NOON MASS ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11. The parish community of Our Lady of Mercy extends its most sincere gratitude to Mr. Jim Williams for coordinating this beautiful celebration. We hope you will join us in honoring all who have served. God Bless America!

Memorial GiftsAt the death of a loved one, many choose in lieu of flowers to encourage friends and family to make a donation to a special charity or cause. Our Lady of Mercy has nourished the spiritual life of so many parishioners and those throughout the Diocese who come here. A Memorial Gift to our Traditions for Tomorrow Building Campaign is a wonderful way to acknowledge the lives of our beloved dead with a gift of loving generosity to the church that has been such a spiritual home. Ms. Deanie Smith can discuss ways for you to remember your loved one. Consider adding a planned gift in your last will and testament to remember Our Lady of Mercy.

10 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
GARDEN OF PEACE
Feasts of All Saints and All Souls
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Mercy,
As the days of fall arrive, we are reminded of this special time of the year when we mark the approaching Feasts of All Saints and All Souls and remember our deceased loved ones. It is said that a great deal can be known about a community by looking at its cemeteries. Our cemeteries reflect respect and bestow reverence to our deceased ancestors.
Our parish is presently in the process of promoting a beautiful Garden of Peace and Memorial Columbarium. This will consist of mausoleum niches for the reverent interment of cremains. The Garden of Peace is open and welcome to everyone --- Catholic and non-Catholic alike. Within the City of Baton Rouge, there are no places of burial presently available on Church grounds. This beautiful addition to Mercy is an ideal and convenient place for the interment of the cremains of our loved ones. For many parishioners and friends, now is a perfect opportunity to think of our own place of burial and even those of our parents. Making such proper planning for this eventual reality is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves and others in taking the burden of these decisions off our loved ones.
Pre-construction sale of columbarium spaces are now in progress. Columbarium spaces are priced at $5,000 for simple cremain boxes for two people and at $7,500 for columbarium spaces for Urns for two people. You may contact Deanie Smith at (225) 926-1883 to make your personal appointment in procuring your space in the beautiful Garden of Peace.
Many of our ancestors who have gone to their eternal rest will find a most beautiful and dignified Garden of Peace in which to be placed. In the deep Catholic tradition of South Louisiana, each year on the Feast of All Saints, an annual blessing of the Columbarium Garden will take place. Families will be invited to partake in the prayer and blessing in remembrance of their beloved dead.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Cleo J. Milano, Pastor
“Our cremains garden will be a history of people, a perpetual record of yesterday, a sanctuary of peace and quiet today and a statement of care and belief in tomorrow. Our beautiful Garden of Peace exists because every life is worth living and remembering always --- So that from the cradle to the grave, Mercy will be our true spiritual home. “
