Captains Corner

We have had a busy but great start to Term 2. As you all know last week’s Athletics Carnival was unfortunately postponed but we look forward to a great carnival in Week 4. Our annual Cross Country event was held on Wednesday 8th and was a great success with many students participating in the dress up day that went along with it.

Tara and I attended a Student Leaders day in Sydney this week and met many new people and learnt a lot about our NSW Government and what goes on when making decisions for our state!

We look forward to the last couple of terms in this position as exciting and busy times await us!

Principal Report

Welcome back to a new term. Firstly, I would like to thank all the students and staff that happily gave up their holiday time on ANZAC Day to march with the school or with other groups that attended. It was my first time marching with our school and I really appreciated the effort from everyone, especially our flag bearers and captains, who spoke and laid our wreath. I can assure the public that our flag bearers are fine after suffering a bit on the day and we will work with students and organisers to ensure no fainting next year. As I stated in my last newsletter report, the school had some new carpet put down in the upstairs main areas over the holidays and we also had a visit from the plumbers when a small water main ruptured unexpectedly just outside the school administration office. A bit of digging and a few repairs now has the problem solved. In Week 3 a school wide upgrade will be occurring to our Wi-Fi network. This system will expand our connection speed and allow a lot more devices to connect at the same time. This upgrade will also have new access points installed in the hall and others to cover some of the Agriculture out-door areas to better enable class activities to occur when needed. The staff are currently involved in planning and preparing for our school External Validation later this term. They spent a very productive 3 hours after school on Monday night working away on our evidence to support our report submission. A special thankyou to our friends at Harden Chi-nese for opening up for the night to make sure that our staff where fed some lovely meals on the night. This 5 yearly process means that we provide a very detailed report on the school and its progress towards our school plan priorities, with plenty of specific examples to support our find-ings. This report is then given to an external review team that read and assess our findings. They then come into the school and meet with our executive team to discuss their findings and make recommendations where needed. Every school in the state undertakes this same process in addi-tion to their own internal reviews and evaluations on a regular basis. Students have been quite active in their classes and it is a real pleasure to take time out of my office and wander the corridors and pop in to see what students are up to. Students are always very warm and inviting – happy to say hello. Perhaps this is just to avoid work for a few moments but is appreciated all the same. Year 12 reports where sent out this week and it was a real pleasure to read them and see how our students are progressing. A bit more work to get through until the end of Term 3 and we hope-fully should see some good results. A real reflection of effort. Finally, we have seen some rain falling in the area. Not enough yet, but a good start. Our school Athletics Carnival was postponed again but has been rescheduled to the 24th May. I think the rain is a little more important for our farming families as well as all our families of connected businesses.

P&C News Our first P&C meeting for the term was a very productive one! We got to see first hand, the staff hard-at-work preparing for the External Validation process that the school will partake in later this year. This external validation process provides an assurance to the school, the school community and the Department of Education that the school's progress aligns with the expectations articulated in the School Excellence Framework (SEF). We would like to thank all of the staff for the hard work they have and will continue to put into preparing for validation. After discussions with MPS P&C, we will be holding a parent meet and greet night along with a school tour of MHS. The date is yet to be confirmed but will be this term, please keep an eye out in the newsletter and facebook page as we would like to see you all there. This term will also see us run our Pie Drive Fundraiser. Order forms will be sent home in the com-ing weeks with the students and posted on the Facebook page. It was fantastic to hear of the representative achievements of three of our students - Beau Abnett (Running), Tom Ings (Bull Riding) and Maci Wilkinson (Team Roping and Barrel Racing). They will all be heading to America in the very near future and we would like to wish them all the best! Our next meeting will be held on Monday 17th June @ 6pm in the Staff Common Room, hope to see you there!

Changes to our Wellbeing System During Term 4, 2018 and Term 1, 2019 the student body and staff were invited to participate in a survey of our current wellbeing system to gauge how well it is working and to encourage sugges-tions for improvements. Some of these suggestions included reward activities and promotional ideas. More details about these will be released over the term. Additionally, we have had some junior students qualify for Platinum award, the highest level award at the time of implementation. It has been decided to increase the number of positive lev-els, and to keep the system working well it will go as follows:

1. 50 merits = Blue level 2. 100 merits = Purple level 3. 200 merits = Platinum 4. 250 merits = Double Blue level 5. 350 merits = Double Purple level 6. 500 merits = Diamond award

Students and parents are reminded they can access their totals at the student portal for Sentral. The link has been emailed to students again. Many thanks, Ms Beck (Wellbeing system coordinator)

LEAP

The start to Term 2 has been busy for the LEAP group. Michael Phelan, COMPACT’s Operations Manager and tech guru, spent some time in Week 1 getting ideas from the group on our secret hush hush project .. Watch this space….

Michael also brought something to continue the swaps. Beau had the best swap, an Eels hand sanitizer, as Michael is also an Eels fan and found this to be the best offer. At the end of the program the student who has the best swap will win a prize. The group all started with a COMPACT pen and were instructed to swap be-tween themselves, students, teachers, family and friends for other items they found of value. The rules, only rules are they are not to swap for money, food or anything illegal, with the goal of the ex-ercise to build their Entrepreneurial skills. Michael took his hand sanitiser back to the COMPACT Wagga Office but couldn’t con-vince anyone to swap for anything else!

This week was about Workplace Health and Safety, First Aid and Mental Health. To finish the session the group made stress balls.

The group is also undertaking a group project to help with some of the school beautification. The group has been given a patch of ground at the front of the school to clean up. This is in line with the project where students are engaging in their school commu-nity and taking pride in their school.

Look out for the changes!

Stage 5 History Excursion

On Tuesday a group of students from Stage 5 jumped on a bus and headed to Boorowa Cen-tral School.

They were lucky enough to be invited along to a WW1 Living History presentation.

Students found out all about different primary artefacts used in WW1 and were even lucky enough to examine real artefacts from the war and in the process, discuss trench warfare, what soldiers wore and what life was like at that time in history.

After the talk for a bit of fun, Boorowa held a friendly yet competitive game of netball be-tween the two schools.

On Thursday 9th May, seventeen girls from Year 7 – 9 trav-elled to Young to compete in the Junior Girls League Tag Carnival. We had a mixture of players who have been play-ing together for years and some girls who had not played the game before. Well done on a terrific effort by all! The girls played a total of 4 games, coming away from the day with 2 losses and 2 wins. The girls showed excellent sportsmanship, teamwork and commitment. The player of the day was Coralie Vasquez, who played some outstanding football and was the most consistent player throughout the day! It is always a pleasure taking our students to carnivals such as these. Well done girls.
