Daryl Williams, Section President

s I begin my second year as president of the Peachtree section, I am able to report that our section is in a

very good place. In this article I will be reporting on three topics that your board discussed during our October meeting. These topics are: Giving to charity, cost of events, and our lack of a Vice President.Giving to Charity: Our recent survey indicated that approximately half of our members like the idea of our section sponsoring some charities while the other half were opposed to it. Two of our members explained they were not against charity, but preferred to choose their own methods to support the charities of their choosing. As we discussed this in the board meeting we were careful to consider the viewpoints of both sides. Your board approved the following resolution “The MBCA Peachtree Section board will not approve any money to be given from the treasury to any charity. If an event organizer wishes to have an event that raises money for a charity, the charity must be designated when the event is first planned and then the amount given to the charity must be a portion of the entrance fee for the event. The organizer shall submit for board approval the portion of the event fee to go to the charity. The two pre-event articles in the newsletter must clearly state the portion of the activity fee going to charity and which charity it is going to.” Cost of Events: In our recent survey several people indicated they found many of our events were too expensive, while others

Aliked the more expensive events that included overnight stays etc. When this was discussed at the board, it was noted that a few years ago our section was struggling financially and could not afford to subsidize events. With the implementation of the electronic newsletter, stabilization of our membership base and continued support of our advertisers, our section is in a strong financial position now. Your board has agreed that we need to do more “Member Appreciation” events where the cost of the event is free. We will also subsidize the cost of some moderately priced events to allow our members who have other financial priorities to participate in more events. We will continue to have some events that include overnight stays that some may find too expensive, but the plan is to have a mixture so that all can find events that meet their needs. Please understand lead times on events is six to nine months so understand this will take time to implement.Lack of a Vice President: In our recent election the nominating committee did not nominate a vice president, and there were no nominations from the floor so we will operate without a Vice President during 2012. This situation occurred when no member of the previous board was able to serve in this role for various reasons. The nominating committee decided it would not be fair to ask someone to serve as vice president without allowing them to first become part of the board and have the opportunity to understand what the position is all about. To plan for the future, the nominating committee contacted four people who were willing to join our board and they were elected. I am confident that we have a future Vice President and a President in that group of four. I have asked several

Message From The Editorby

Diana Quinn, Editor

s your new Newsletter editor, I would like to start out by thanking Roger McKissick for his loyal service

and dedication to the Peachtree section. The very first time I met Roger was at the High Museum for the Allure of the Automobile exhibit. Gary Hagstrom introduced us and told me how long Roger had been involved with the newsletter. I went WOW! At that same instant, I thought this guy needs a break. While Roger may be stepping out of his role as editor, be assured that Roger’s wisdom and in-sight is not gone from the Peachtree

section.Roger introduced you to me in the last newsletter so I won’t bore you with all of those details again. My husband Jim and

I live in Marietta with our two Yorkshire Terriers, Lady and Tramp. Jim is an aeronautical planner at Lockheed Martin and I am a computer and accounting consultant. My work presently has me traveling back and forth from Atlanta to Chi-cago. I have to say that the weather in Atlanta is much bet-ter than Chicago and we don’t miss the snow. We own three Mercedes; a 1980 450SL, a 2002 ML500, and a 2007 CLS 550.My love of anything with a motor and wheels began as a young child. My father raced motorcycles and I learned to ride with my Dad’s assistance at the young age of five even though my feet couldn’t reach the ground. I grew up in a small town outside of Boulder Colorado and the one doctor in town drove the most beautiful 1960’s white Mercedes sedan. I always admired that car and I aspired to one day own a Mercedes. Never did I dream that I would own three.I would like to personally invite all of our members whether your a long-time member or a newbie to pick at least one event this year and come out and enjoy the camaraderie and enjoyment of membership. In my 15 years of membership, the Peachtree section has the friendliest members that I have had the pleasure to be around. In closing, I am honored to serve as your newsletter editor. If you have suggestions or comments please send them to me at [email protected] or give me a call 770-635-8112.

board members who were rotating off the board to serve as unofficial advisory board members, so that in addition to the new ideas we have with new members we also have some stability from those who have lead the club in the past. The duties of the Vice President are being divided among various members of the board and I am confident that our section will have another great year in 2012.

Amelia Island Concours d’EleganceMarch 9-11, 2012

or many people spring is their favorite part of the year. For some spring begins when they see the first red bud

or the crocuses start to grow, for others it is when the weather warms enough to get out their favorite shorts, or baseball begins. But for many of us spring begins when we travel to Amelia Island, Florida for the annual Concours d’Elegance. A signature event on the island (every March), the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance typically features 250+ fabulous, rare automobiles. It’s a grand time to be on Amelia Island, so be sure to book hotel rooms as early as possible. Lodging typically becomes sold out as the event nears, but with Jacksonville nearby, if you are willing to drive a little there are usually rooms available there when the island is sold out.We will have a dinner the evening of Saturday, March 10 and once again we plan to hold this at the very popular Crab Trap. We are once again able to hold the cost to $35 per person, the same rate as previous years. In past years we have hosted numerous guests from other sections and we once again expect to have the privilege of spending time with Mercedes-Benz owners from other parts of the country.

he title of this event also pays homage to the Civilian Conservation Corps who created so many beautiful

structures in and around Chattanooga in the 1930’s. I must admit it is also a very blatant plagiarism of Daryl William’s event in Augusta ABC & D in 2011.This driving event will start in Calhoun, GA and take a leisurely drive through the mountains to the Chickamauga Battlefield and the site of “The Battle above the Clouds” which was a pivotal event in what we southerner’s like to refer to as “That recent unpleasantness”. Our tour of Chickamauga will include a narrated description of the events that changed the course of history and preserved the Union. We will have a catered lunch at Pointe Park with a sweeping vista overlooking Chattanooga and beyond. Thinking of Doing Some Restoration or Refurbishment Work

on Your Mercedes-Benz?by

Roger McKissick, Event Planner

ell if you are, you’ll become a member of an ever-growing fraternity or sorority, particularly if you will

be doing some or all of it yourself. If you’ve never been in-volved in mechanical restoration or refurbishment before, the

uncertainty alone can be enough to deter you from starting. But with some very basic organization and the abundant in-formation and resources literally at your fingertips these days, you need not hesitate if you have some available time and patience, a little dedicated space, some funding appropriate to the task in mind, and of course the desire to give it a shot at least once. Notice: Spousal approval is always a good thing to have in advance……in writing……. and notarized would be good, too.In that spirit of optimism, a tech session is being planned for next year – possibly in the spring – that will address these issues and several other fundamentals of restoration and refurbishment of a Mercedes-Benz. The knowledge and ex-perience part will come from a panel comprised of section members that have chosen to be involved in this process. Questions would be posed to the panel members by a fa-cilitator that will address the fundamentals necessary to the process, some things each learned to do and not to do, com-mon tools used, effects on marriages (really, most are quite good!), and other important things necessary to keep in mind. We would also hope to have pictures to show, and in most cases the finished – or ongoing – product would be there for you to see. Depending on where this will be held, the session will also include a technical expert to address some of the most common, but preventable repairs that service entities see, consequences of remaining unattended, how to prevent them, and also address some questions from the session’s attendees on issues they’re presently experiencing and what to do about them.

Cars for CainesMay 6, 2012 (tentative)

byJim Mitchell, Event Planner

id someone say “cars”? Did someone say “dogs”? Come join us for some fun with both cars and dogs

at the 2nd annual “Cars For Canines” fundraiser, May 6, 2012 from 12 noon til 4pm. The location is still to be determined, look for further details in upcoming newsletters. All proceeds for this event will benefit The Canine Adoption Network, a lo-cal not for profit, all volunteer, 501 C certified, dog rescue group. This very dedicated organization is in need of fund-ing to further their cause of rescuing and caring for abused and neglected dogs, and finding good homes for them. C.A.N. is part of a larger group, Save The Horses, which performs a similar rescue service for horses in Georgia. For more information on these groups go to their websites: www.CanineAdoptionNetwork.org and www.SavetheHorses.orgThe fun and festivities will include a car show (in secured parking) with all makes and models welcome, dog adoptions, a silent auction, great food and more! This will be a terrific way to spend an afternoon with family, friends and fellow car enthusiasts while supporting a worthy cause! For car show questions please contact Jim Mitchell at 770-883-2316 or at [email protected]. If you have something of some value that you would like to donate to a silent auc-tion, please also contact Jim Mitchell.

DNow if you’ve already been involved in the restoration or re-furbishment process and would like to be considered as a possible panel member, please let me know by e-mail at [email protected] or by calling me (770-476-2869) at your earliest convenience. In order to keep the session within a reasonable time period, the panel needs to be limited to around four people. Whether or not you’ve been involved in this process, wish to get something started, or simply are cu-rious about hearing from those who have done it, we think you’ll find this event to be very informative and interesting. Though plans are presently only in the very early stages for this event, more will be published in the February newsletter. For now, keep March or May a bit open on your calendar, as those are the months presently being considered.

Welcome to New Section Membersby

Jim Mitchell, Membership Director

elcome to the THIRTY new MBCA Peachtree Section members for the months of September and October.

The Section membership total is now up to 476 with continued steady growth. Many of these new members joined as a result of their participation in the Section’s October 1st Concours d’Elegance which made that event even more of a success. Your active participation is absolutely essential to the ongoing viability of the Peachtree Section. All members share a common interest in Mercedes-Benz automobiles, but at the same time have very diverse interests in what we would like to see in the events the Section sponsors. While your interest may primarily be in tech sessions or touring events, why not try something you haven’t done before and expand your horizons? Please feel free to contact any of the board members if you have suggestions or would like to volunteer to help organize an event. While the events scheduled for 2011 are all but complete, the schedule for 2012 is coming together. Take a look at what is happening and take advantage of the opportunities to enjoy your car, meet some new people and see some other beautiful cars. There has to be at least one event that you and your family would enjoy. See you there?

ver 100 classic cars and vintage mortorcycles, including 61 Mercedes-Benz vehicles rolled into the

parking lot of Atlanta Classic Cars, the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Duluth, Georgia, on October 1, 2011.The occasion was the Peachtree Section Concours d’Elegance, celebrating the Section’s 32nd year of activities in Georgia. In addition to the day’s displays of sensational cars, an original piece of art inspired by the 125 years of Mercedes-Benz was unveiled by local artist, Mark Boomershine, who also painted a 380SL in a similar theme. Boomershine explained he was inspired by the longevity of the marque, as well as the many significant models produced by the company throughout its history. This major work is now on permanent display in the main showroom of the dealership.

On the Friday afternoon before the event, National Concours Chairman Peter Lesler held a judging school for 27 volunteer judges to prepare for the next day of judging. The judging team first walked the parking lot to organize where cars would be placed for the following day’s event. Peter then explained the steps of judging a vehicle with his new 100-point system for show and street cars. After a delightful dinner from Marlow’s Tavern in Duluth prepared by Chef Jamie, judges practiced by applying their new knowledge on several of our members’ vintage cars and vehicles brought by club guests from North Carolina and Florida. Traveling through the southern states, Doug Truitt, MBCA’s Executive Director of the National Business Office and Josie Lesler, MBCA Director at Large, also joined in the activities. Saturday morning started quite early with Diana Quinn overseeing registration and entrant packets, along with volunteer Maureen Walker and the “Pink Ladies” registering over 100 vehicles for a day of fun, food, and festivities. The day was sunny, windy and beautiful; the cars were thrilling to see as they approached registration for their individual photographs. Professional photographs for Atlanta Classic Cars were taken by David Bennett Productions and one of our newer members, Glen Cason captured photographs for the Peachtree Section. Jazz quartet music was provided all day by The Jordan Shalhoup Quartet. This event was open to the public; approximately 500 people passed through the gates to enjoy the classic cars, Sonny’s BBQ, a bake sale, “pink boutique,” and raffle tickets to benefit the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk. The oldest registered vehicle was a 1933 Mercedes-Benz, courtesy of local member Hans Vorpahl. The newest car was club members Charles and Pamela Burrage’s 2009 SLK300. The People’s Choice award and First Place Concours d’Elegance Pre-War car went to Robert Stanek for his 1934 TYP15. Co-owners Cathy Ellis and Johanna Ellis, with General Manager Bob Crolic, awarded Atlanta Classic Car’s Choice to Mark Richey for his 1954 300SL Gullwing. Richey’s car went on to win the Concours Best of Show and the Bud Johnson trophy.

Concours awards were given to Steve Cohen for his 1979 450SL, Karl Boegner for his 1963 220SE, and Ken Jarrett for showing his 1968 280SL. “Ordinaire” awards were presented to Alex Tibcken, the youngest contender for the day, showing his 1965 220S; Elton Roberts for his 1989 SL Convertible and Colin Allen showing his 1989 560SL. Anne Holdgrafer won “Highest Mileage,” Hans Vorpahl for “Best Color,” Rex Foster for “Best Interior” and Chris Gregoriu for “Longest Distance Driven.” Johanna Ellis presented 21 additional awards including “Ladies Choice” to Hans Vorpahl and “Top Twenty” to 20 happy smiling faces. Atlanta Classic Cars provided blue ribbons for participation to all registrants and T-shirts to the first 50 registrants. Paula Locke, Marketing Manager for Atlanta Classic Cars, worked tirelessly on this event. It was a privilege to work with her and Johanna Ellis. Jim Mitchell organized the judging groups and volunteers for the day. There was a flurry of activity all day with something for everyone, even a toy Mercedes-Benz car and race track for the children manned by the Boy Scouts of America local Troop 563. A representative from Detaillink.com car care products, and Hagerty’s Collector and Vintage Car Insurance agent Mike Collins (a new member of the Peachtree Section) were present to answer questions about their company’s products. We appreciate the Peachtree Section ladies who staffed the MBCA membership booth and talked with many potential members throughout the day. We heard positive comments about the day from attendees who were having a great experience at the show.As Jim Mitchell, our Peachtree Section Chief Judge stated at the end of the day: “Thanks to everyone at Atlanta Classic Cars, as well as the many Peachtree, Carolina, and Florida Section members who helped make this one of the best Concours events in my eleven years with this Section. The quality of the cars in the Concours/Show class was the best I have seen and the same can be said of the Ordinaire class. It was obvious that all 61 Mercedes-Benz entrants had spent considerable time getting their cars ready for the big show. Special thanks go to Peachtree Members Hans Vorpahl and Maurice Jove for displaying several very nice cars (a 1972 600 limo, a 1971

he Peachtree Section was the host club for the Mystique of the Automobile at the Lyndon House in Athens,

Attendance was estimated to be between 4,000 – 5,000 people.Peachtree member Mark Richey headed up the car selection committee and the show field was full with nearly 100 invited cars for the event. Cars of many marques representing every decade from the teens through the 70’s were shown. Peachtree members in attendance included Ken Jarrett (1968 280SL), Mark Richey (1954 300SL Gullwing), Todd Emily (1960 300D), Jim Mitchell (1960 190SL), Candler Medors (1982 380SL) and Dan Marlowe (1932 Ford). 3.5 convertible, etc.). Having just completed the Great Race in June of this year, it was fun for me to be able to chat with Hans and hear of his experiences in driving the Race three times in cars that were on display such as his 1933 220, his 1936 380K and his 1957 300 SL roadster. His roadster still has the Great Race emblem from 2004 on each door. This Concours was an unqualified success!” A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our 2011 Concours d’Elegance with Atlanta Classic Cars. I am looking forward to seeing all of you next year!

provided fashionable clothes for each decade beginning in the teens. Models were driven past the viewing stand in the period correct car and announcers gave a historical view of the fashion, the car and the period. The oldest car participating in the parade of fashion was a 1913 Model T. Mark Richey’s Gullwing represented the 50’s and Todd Emily’s 300D represented the early 60’s. Hundreds of appreciative attendees applauded the models as they exited and showed off the fashion.Almost 40 artist made trophies were presented at the close of the day. Taking home best closed car was a dusk mauve 1960 Imperial Crown sedan owned by Richard Burgess of Atlanta and the People’s Choice award was won by Paige Scarborough of Athens for his 1954 Austin Healey. Dan Marlowe, Jim Mitchell and Ken Jarrett each took home one of the spectacular one-of-a-kind trophies. In addition to the cars and fashion, there were 4 different live musical acts performing throughout the day. A children’s activity was provided giving children the chance to make a model car. An estimated 100 children participated. This festival certainly has the potential for an on-going event in Athens. Stay tuned.

We Roamed To Romeby

Harold W. Wilson, Rally Master

he rain the night before did little to prevent the Saturday morning of October 29th, 2011 from dawning as a perfect

fall day. It was cool, crisp, and bright for beginning the Roaming to Rome Rally. Even after the Rally Master gave his speech with all the warnings of narrow roads, bicyclists, hikers and other hazards along the route, eleven drivers and ten navigators were primed and ready to go. One driver, Michael Cooper, drove alone doing his own navigation and wrote the answers to the clues and finished a close 4th. Eight cars finished the two hour and forty-five minutes route and all eleven had their stories to tell during lunch. The rally ended at the Coosa Country Club, which overlooks the golf course in downtown Rome where a scrumptious lunch was waiting. Among our guests at lunch were Louis and Joelene Barton, Rome residents and long time friends of member Ken Jarrett. Also in attendance were Marti and Joe Walstad. Marti is the great niece of Martha Berry, the founder of the famous Berry College. Ken purchased his infamous Great Race 1968 280SL many years ago from Marti. She related some history

of her aunt and of the College and then arranged for our entire group to tour the Martha Berry museum and historic home of the Berry family. After this visit, Ken Jarrett led our parade throughout the campus of Berry College, the largest in the United States. Everyone left happy especially the top three winners of the rally. In 3rd place were Daryl and Jean Williams; 2nd place was Jim and Mary Jo Mitchell and the big winner: John and Jean Stultz. The plans for the fall of 2012 are already under way.
