The design approach includes planning, organization, proper staffing, effective direction, andcontrol over the decision-making process. In order to provide proper up-front planning of aproject, six planning elements must be considered and implemented at the beginning of theproject. These elements must be maintained and/or adjusted as needed as the project movesthrough development. The six planning elements include:
Establish realistic objective Budget efforts to accomplish tasksProgram tasks to achieve objectives Identify and resolve constraints to design processSchedule tasks in a sequential timeframe Devise strategies to ensure profitability and success
Our ApproachIn the TEC organization it is the Project Manager’s task to establish realistic objectives to be accomplished by the Team during the development of a project. To establish these objectives, the Project Manager (PM) must ensure that the Team has a complete understanding of the project requirements.
The PM programs the required tasks associated with meeting scheduled milestones to set realistic objectives. Tasks include: Client, QA/QC, and internal reviews; information transfers; and milestone submittals. It is critical that the PM conveys all associated tasks that are essential to the planning process to the Team.
Once the objectives have been defined, and the tasks associated with their achievement have been programmed, the PM and Team schedule the tasks in the proper order to be successful. Scheduling is an art rather than a science; however, business realities make scheduling essential. High quality work can be maintained only if proper time is given to the production and review/revision of the work.
The PM and the Team have set realistic objectives, defined the tasks for plan development, and scheduled the tasks for success. Through our combined efforts, we now have a defined program to complete the project, and budgeted efforts by discipline and phase to complete the tasks.
The devised strategies ensure that projects remain successful and profitable by creating advantageous conditions, recognizing differing objectives which can create conflict, analyzing alternatives, and creating acceptability and scheduling performance.
Our team consists of a mixture of Senior Principals, Project Management, and Senior Engineer staff as well as production staff and our Quality Control department. We believe it allows for the best mix of service, quality control and engineering experience to be brought to the project.

Sustainable DesignOur LEED Accredited Professionals play a key role in ensuring that an integrated
sustainable design approach sets environmental goals, defines “Green” design intent and establishes definable metrics is achieved on all projects
that have LEED accreditation as a goal.
Thompson Ehle Company’s sustainable design services include documentation of LEED credits with USGBC; lighting design
photometrics; energy models and studies; energy audits and LEED Credit feasibility studies.
Striving for Sustainable design is largely driven by design options to achieve energy savings, from building envelope glass and insulating properties to actual systems modifications. Using solar to heat water used in outside air handlers is one way design can be used to improve energy efficiency of the building. Using demand control ventilation for large occupancy areas within the building is another.

methods that have been developed over the last 40 years based on our experiences of the project types and feedback from Owners, Operators and Guests after the facilities have been in operation.
We consider these to be the most valuable in making sure the building have operated as they were designed and intended, as well as, help us continue to improve our work in the future.

Providing engineering design for Community type projects requires thinking outside the “cookie cutter” approach as the one-size fits-all approach does not provide the best in engineering. From community-based theaters to world-class international airports, our designs are based on thorough collaboration with our clients to understand their goals.
Developing an engineering design that integrates with the building’s architecture, the Owner’s business model, the variation in people’s needs, the specific locales, and the ever increasing demands for reduced energy use requires an open mind, a flexible approach, and a firm grasp of the basic engineering principals. Together, we envision the best environments for our client that exceed all checkpoints asked of the engineering design. We measure our success by the positive impact on the community and the lack of impact on energy consumption.
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, and Civil Engineering and Technology Infrastructure and Water Features Design Services were provided to Heery for the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. TEC’s renovation and expansion made the Georgia World Congress Center the fourth largest convention center in the United States at 3.9 million square feet and gave the center more than 90 acres, a new 1.6 million square feet, 400,000 square feet of exhibit facilities, 75,000 square feet of meeting rooms, a 45,000 square foot Ballroom, 645,000 square feet of back-of-house space, 380,000 square feet of plaza space, and over 220,000 square feet of parking. Our work spans four phases including civil site engineering, relocation of 30” combined sewer, and electrical substation for Georgia Power, soil encapsulation, and underground ventilation system for contaminated soil plume. The Center boasts: a FedEx office store, restaurant, and food court, concession vendors, a gift shop, parking decks, and pedestrian bridges between buildings.
GEORGIA WORLD CONGRESS CENTERATLANTA, GA
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to Gensler for the Deloitte University: Hotel and Conference Center in Westlake, Texas. This LEED Gold certified project is comprised of a total of 743,257 square feet, an 800 key hotel totaling 380,125 square feet, a 8,500 square foot lobby, ballroom, function and convention centers, 32,775 square foot three-meal cafeteria, bar and coffee bar, retail and commercial space, and 20,000 square foot health spa and fitness center.
DELOITTE UNIVERSITY: HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTERWESTLAKE, TX
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to Flatow, Moore, Bryan, Shaffer for Disney’s Grand Floridian Convention Center in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. This 150,000 square foot conference center is by the Seven Seas Lagoon in Walt Disney World, at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The conference center offers a major performing arts theater, five restaurants and lounges, 18,219 square foot Grand Floridian Ballroom, 4,680 square foot St. Augustine Hall executive boardroom, 1,369 square foot Whitehall conference room, 522 square foot Key West breakout room, and 1,092 square foot Palm Beach Boardroom.
DISNEY’S GRAND FLORIDIAN CONVENTION CENTERLAKE BUENA VISTA, FL
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to CMMI for the Omni at CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The Omni Hotel is in the heart of downtown connecting CNN Center and the Georgia World Congress Center. It includes 1,070 guest keys, 1,007 deluxe keys, 29 premium keys, 31 suites, three restaurants and lounges, Natural Body Spa, swimming pool, fitness center and salon, 45 meeting rooms with more than 120,000 square feet of function space, including the 19,864 square foot Grand Ballroom and 2,212-seat theater.
THE OMNI HOTEL AT CNN CENTERATLANTA, GA
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart for the Grand America Hotel and Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Designed and built as the host hotel for the 2002 Winter Olympics Thompson Ehle Company provided an addition to the 1,000 key existing 24-story hotel. The project included a new central plant and connections between the existing 1,000 keys and the new 775 key Grand Hotel. The Grand’s two ballrooms (approximately 36,000 square feet), Grand Salon (4,581 square feet), Center Courtyard (35,000 square feet) and 20 meeting rooms are state of the art related to electronic connections, power for exhibition and audio/visual. Amenities include: The Grand America Spa, Salon and Fitness Center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and two restaurants and lounges. The hotel was used for much of the Olympic broadcasting.
GRAND AMERICA HOTEL & CONVENTION CENTERSALT LAKE CITY, UT
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided for the Grand Panama City Beach Hotel and Convention Center in Panama City Beach, Florida. The Grand Panama City Beach Hotel and Convention Center is a 60 acre beachside development that includes: a 400 key, 22-story hotel, 125,000 square feet of convention space, a water activity park with swimming pools, retail strip mall, 180 unit, 22-story condominium building and a 1,000 space parking deck.
GRAND PANAMA CITY BEACH HOTEL AND CONVENTION CENTERPANAMA CITY BEACH, FL
Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to HKS, Inc. for the Poliforum Leon Convention Center in León, México. This $40 million convention and trade center consisted of over 350,000 square feet of exhibit areas, more than 484,376 square feet of area for conferences and expositions, 54,853 square foot lobby/pre-function space, 753 square foot Maria Grever Hall, 1,496 square foot Francisco Zarco Hall, 646 square foot Jose Clemente Orozco Hall, 4,446 square foot Emma Godoy Hall, restaurant/cafeteria and service/support areas, and the most modern, flexible, ample and functional facilities in the country. In addition, the facilities included a 2,500 person auditorium, outdoor fairgrounds and exhibit areas and a cultural center.
POLIFORUM LEON CONVENTION CENTERLEÓN, MÉXICO
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering and Lighting Design Services were provided for The Chattanoogan Hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Chattanoogan consists of a conference center and hotel with 210 guest keys. Facilities include a ballroom, three restaurants and lounges, game room, fitness center, spa, sauna, and indoor swimming pool separate from the conference center. The Conference Center has 25,000 square feet of meeting space including: meeting rooms, boardroom, breakout rooms and amphitheater.
THE CHATTANOOGAN HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTERCHATTANOOGA, TN
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to TVSdesign for the Bayport Plaza building in Tampa, Florida. Developed by the Wilson Company, The Bayport Plaza is a 250,000 square foot office tower with an adjacent 448-room Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay Hotel consisting of: 400 guest rooms in the main tower and 48 waterfront villas or "Casitas", 27,000 square feet of meeting space, an 11,000 square foot ballroom, two swimming pools, a health club that offers two tennis courts and three award winning restaurants. It sits on an environmentally protected site containing 39 acres with 3,400 lineal feet of frontage along Old Tampa Bay and includes 264,922 rentable square feet.

BAYPORT PLAZATAMPA, FL
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering and Lighting Design Services were provided for the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Decatur, Georgia. The Emory Conference Center Hotel, nestled in a forest preserve, includes: 325 keys, two restaurants and lounges, 23,000 square feet of conference space, 15,000 square feet of meeting space, a spa, sauna, fitness club, and indoor swimming pool. Recent expansion on this project achieved LEED Silver.
EMORY CONFERENCE CENTER HOTELDECATUR, GA
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to KAF for the Hyatt Regency, Greenwich in Greenwich, Connecticut. This classic New England hotel accommodates business travelers with 400 keys, a 10,000 square foot ballroom, 10,000 square foot of meeting space, a board room and lecture theater, full-service restaurant, deli, nightclub and health spa. The Garden Atrium offers passive heating and cooling design.
HYATT REGENCY GREENWICHGREENWICH, CT
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided to TVSdesign for the Hyatt Regency ballroom expansion located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The Hyatt Atlanta has 180,000 square feet of ballroom, exhibit, meeting and hospitality space, including 52 meeting rooms, four hospitality suites, three ballrooms. The hotel features 24-stories, a 26,000 square foot ballroom, 38,000 gross square foot exhibit hall, and a 19,757 square foot conference center with 19 meeting rooms of various sizes.
HYATT REGENCY ATLANTAATLANTA, GA
Engineering Consultation Services were provided to Strategic Hotels & Resorts for the renovation of the Lincolnshire Marriott in Lincolnshire, Illinois. TEC reviewed drawings for the renovation of the Lincolnshire Marriott that encompassed this entire 170 acre property. The Lincolnshire Marriott includes: 390 keys, three floors, 72,000 square feet of function space, 22 meeting rooms, five restaurants and lounges, Marriott Live Performance Theater with 882-seat Mainstage, 18-hole golf course, tennis club and fitness center.
LINCOLNSHIRE MARRIOTT RESORTLINCOLNSHIRE, IL
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering and Lighting Design Services were provided for the Embassy Suites – Kennesaw Town Center in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Embassy Suites – Kennesaw Town Center includes: seven-stories, 192 keys, approximately 161,425 square feet total, 5,500 square feet of flexible meeting and reception space for up to 500 guests, a Ruth’s Chris steakhouse, fitness room, swimming pool, and solarium.
EMBASSY SUITES - KENNESAW TOWN CENTERKENNESAW, GA
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering Design Services were provided for the Franklin Marriott Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee. The Franklin Marriott Cool Springs is located just south of Nashville and features 300 keys, 75,000 square feet of ballrooms and meeting space and 20,000 square feet of reception areas, lobby areas, three restaurants and lounges, indoor swimming pool, and fitness center.
FRANKLIN MARRIOTT COOL SPRINGSFRANKLIN, TN
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering and Lighting Design Services were provided to Chapman Coyle Chapman for the Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort in Stone Mountain, Georgia. This majestic hotel and conference center features a five-story, 240,000 square foot complex containing 311 guest keys and 25 suites, four restaurants and lounges, 40,000 square feet of meeting space and 48 meeting rooms, a 9,500 square foot ballroom, Spa and Fitness Center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, arcade, two 18-hole championship golf courses, and a 100-seat 4D amphitheater.
