Biography
Terrence Southern is a Robotics Engineer, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist and Motivational
Speaker. He works as a Robotics Automation Engineer for GE Global Research, where he
is responsible for all automation project business development innovation and intelligence
throughout GE. During his 13 year career in robotics, he has worked in several industries
focusing on the advancement of manufacturing technology while saving several millions
across the company. His technical proficiencies cover a broad array of project
management and research & development experience in areas which include robotics,
machine vision, controls, welding, material handling and various programming languages.
Mr. Southern is also the Founder & Chairman of Dallas based non-profit organization
Illuminate S.T.E.M. (Sustaining Talent & Elevating Minds) which focuses on project based
hands-on learning activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Numerous awards have been bestowed upon Terrence for his service to the manufacturing
industry and community at large for his work, dedication and fortitude. Terrence Southern is
not just a man with a big heart and a vision. He has been the recipient of numerous awards

BEYA “Most Promising Engineer in the Industry” (2012), US Black Engineer & Information
Technology Magazine; HBCU Distinguished Alumni Recognition (2011), Engineering
Society of Detroit’s Excellence in Leadership Award (2009), US FIRST Lego League
Michigan Adult/Mentor Award (2008), and the BEYA “Modern Day Technology Leader”
(2007). While Of all of these honors, his most cherished was the invitations to serve as a
keynote speaker for several industry and youth motivational conferences. His long-standing
record of robotics team coaching and teaching the fundamentals of robotics and coding to
young children has earned him respectability and creditability among his colleagues and
students alike. With every accomplishment recognized and every accomplishment
achieved silently, Terrence does not rest on his laurels. He is constantly looking for new
means by which to innovate across the world, stimulate young minds and cultivate our new
generation of leaders. A native of Detroit, MI, he is a proud father and a passionate leader
in the community. Mr. Southern earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at
Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee in 2003 and he continues to embody
the motto Think, Work, Serve.
