You are the mentor allocated Thomas for his placement.

One of the objectives is to manage and coordinate care for 2 or 3 patients / service users. The only concern raised from the previous placement was that he lacks confidence.

It soon becomes apparent Thomas is having some difficulties in managing and coordinating care delivery.

He is easily distracted, disorganised and requires constant prompting. Thomas prefers to engage in ‘hands on’ rather than taking on further responsibilities.

He has had the majority of the skills within his practice assessment document signed off, however on several occasions when asked to provide a rationale for practice he has been unable to demonstrate the level of knowledge you expect.

Assessment • Possible areas to consider in your

discussions:

– Has the student been given enough time to practise?

– Has enough time been spent assessing the student?

– What type of assessment could identify the correct level of ability of the student?

Summary• Do our assessments enable us to make such

judgements soundly?

• How do our own personal thoughts and feelings influence our assessment decisions ?

• Would an assessment produce the same or similar results on more than one occasion?

• Would other assessors agree with my interpretations of the student’s performance?
