The Essent ia l Connect ion Volume 2, I ssue 1

When sharing with others it's

crucial that each of us use

caution, and educate our-

selves about what can and

cannot be said about essential

oils. The book LEGAL GUIDE-

LINES FOR UNLICENSED

PRACTITIONERS by Dr. Law-

rence Wilson offers some

guidance on this issue.

WORDS TO AVOID

In the health care field, certain

words have been assigned

legal meaning in the state

statuses. The state legislatures

have declared that only cer-

tain licensed individuals can

use these words. If anyone

else uses them, they are con-

sidered to be practicing medi-

cine, psychology or another

regulated profession without a

license.

Even if the statuses are not

constitutional or if one works

outside of them, it is very wise

to avoid using words that are

reserved for licensed practitio-

ners. These words include:

cure, diagnose, prescribe, treat

and possibly even the word

disease.

Instead of the word CURE,

use the words RESTORE, HELP,

ALLEVIATE, IMPROVE, COR-

RECT, BALANCE or NORMAL-

IZE.

Instead of the word DIAG-

NOSE, one may ASSESS,

MEASURE, CHECK, DETER-

MINE or EVALUATE.

Instead of the word PRE-

SCRIBE, one may recommend,

SUGGEST, ADVISE, PROPOSE

or offer options.

Instead of the word TREAT,

one may HANDLE, WORK

WITH, RELIEVE, BALANCE,

NORMALIZE, AMELIORATE,

CORRECT or REMEDY.

Instead of the word DISEASE,

use the words CONDITION,

PROBLEM, DEFICIENCY, EX-

CESS or IMBALANCE.

Instead of naming diseases,

as is done in the medical para-

digm, use simple, descriptive

terms. For example, one might

say to a client, “I see you have

swollen joints”, rather than “I

see you have arthritis”. Arthri-

tis is a medical diagnosis.

Words to AVOID When Sharing!

Words like ‘naturopath’,

‘nutritionist’ or ‘psychologist’

have legal meanings and may

only be used by licensed peo-

ple. Regardless of the constitu-

tionality of such laws, one

needs to exercise care. Much

safer words are consultant,

counselor, coach, educator or

healer. Using the word

‘therapist’ is probably safe.

Are Your Pets Ears Driving Them Crazy?

Inside Story Headline

by Debbie Norris

Being proactive in your pet's

health can save you time and

money later, by nipping an

issue in the bud before it gets

a grip on your beloved pet. It

seems that ear problems with

both dogs and cats can not

only be a nuisance but also

very harmful to their ear's

structure if steps aren't taken

early on.

Dr. Melissa Shelton, DVM in

her book, Animal Desk Refer-

ence, states the following ba-

sic rules:

1. Always consult with a veteri-

narian concerning ear re-

lated problems. Situations,

such as ruptured ear drums

are common, and even a

veterinary ear cleaner with-

out essential oils cans cause

damage in this situation.

2. Never place neat essential

oils directly into the ear

canal.

3. Never "drip" neat or con-

centrated oil solutions into

the ear with the intention of

"reaching the bottom

4. Monitor the skin of the ear

canal and of the ear flap for

irritation to essential oil use.

Dr. Shelton recommends us-

ing Coconut Oil, V-6 Enhanced

Vegetable Oil Complex, or

Animal Scents Ointment as

carrier oils to mix with essen-

tial oils, and then applying to

the ears. The intent is not to

fill the ear canal with the di-

luted essential oil mixture,

but rather to allow a coating

of the ear tissues with the

diluted essential oil mixture.

Coconut Oil and Animal

Scents Ointment are hard at

most room temperatures, and

as such will easily melt once

they come into contact with

the warmer body temp of the

animal's ear tissues. Coconut

Oil has its own value as an anti

-bacterial, anti-fungal, and

anti-inflammatory making it a

valuable tool in its own

right for cleaning ear debris

and also as a carrier of essen-

tial oils to their place of need.
