Primary 5 Mental Maths Activity Overview Term 2

Week 7 PURPOSE: To develop understanding about position, direction and movement of

shapes, using appropriate vocabulary. Monday Tuesday Wednesday

8 main compass points – locate

and name

Turn body to given number of

degrees e.g. 180

degrees clockwise- what

direction are you facing?

Vocabulary = clockwise and

anticlockwise.

Vocabulary = horizontal,

vertical, diagonal, right left.

e.g. put your left arm up

e.g. draw a diagonal line.

2D shapes and right angles

How many right angles does a

square have, a rectangle,

pentagon, right angled triangle

and a rhombus.

Which 2D shapes do not have

right angles?

Week 8 PURPOSE: To learn by heart the division facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Division by 2, 5 and 10.

e.g. 10 ÷ 2; 25 ÷ 5 etc.

fact = all even numbers are

exactly divisible by 2

true or false – these numbers

are exactly divisible by 2: 18,

15, 23, 36, 50

Division by 3 and 4.

Function machine: what number

will come out if we put in: 12,

16, 24?

How many 4s are in 40, 28

etc.

How many 3s are in 21, 12

etc.

Place value, ÷ by 10 e.g

75 ÷ 10 = 7.5; 102 ÷10=

10.2

What is the rule?

Week 9 PURPOSE to learn helpful “tips” for finding division answers.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Dividing by 2: what is the

rule? All numbers ending with

the digits 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 can

…….

Dividing by 5: numbers ending

in five or 0 are exactly

divisible by 5

Dividing by 10: – numbers

ending with a zero……

To find 2/5 of an amount:

to find the answer, divide

by the 5 and multiply by

the 2 e.g. 2/5 of 15 = 6;

2/5 of 35 = 12

To find ¾ of an amount e.g.

36 divided by 4 and

multiplied by 3 = ?

16 =

40 =

Week 10 PURPOSE: to quickly and confidently read analogue and digital clock times, know the

link between minutes and hours and write/order decimals.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Be able to read all Analogue

and digital times- extend

to: Add on half an hour; an hour;

ten minutes; 20 minutes; ¾ of

How many minutes in a stated

number of hours?

e.g. in 1 hour; 2 hours; 4

hours?

e.g. ½ hour; 1 ½ hours; 2 ½

hours

Write as a decimal;

Four and a half; three point 6;

five and 7 tenths; a half; 9

tenths; 3 and 2 tenths; 7 and

a half. Order decimals

Page 3: Mental Maths Booklet Spring Term - storage.googleapis.com

an hour; 1 hour and a half.

What time is it now? according to size e.g. 0.1,

0.9, 0.4 =

e.g. 2.4, 1.9 and 5.7 =

Week 11 PURPOSE: to embed learning of names of lines and learn what quadrilaterals and

prisms are.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Horizontal, vertical and

diagonal lines = review what

each word means and be able

to recognise these in our

world.

2d shape with one right angle

e.g. right angled triangle; 2d

shape with no right angles =

circle, oval; equal sides and

angles e.g. square.

2 dimensional shapes: Quadrilateral = a 2d shape

with four straight sides e.g.

square, rectangle, rhombus

, trapezium, parallelogram

and kite.

3 dimensional shapes

A prism is a three

dimensional shape that has the

same cross section all along its

length. E.g. cuboids, cylinders

and triangular prisms.

Week 12 PURPOSE: To develop mental maths strategies to achieve quick and accurate answers

when completing calculations involving zero. Monday Tuesday Wednesday

adding/subtracting multiples of

10. E.g. show me the sum of

250 and 60; total of 160 and

130; subtraction 120 from

240.

Orally, describe how you

reached your answer

Multiplication/division facts

e.g. product of 30 and 80

show me 240 divided by 60;

2400 divided by 60; 150

divided by 10; 1500 divided by

10.

Making 100 e.g. 40 and 60;

120 subtract 20; 500 divided

by 5 etc.

Making 1000 e.g. 900 + 100;

1500-500; 500 x 2; 2000

divided by 2 etc.
