What are Mental Disorders?

“Mental disorder also called mental health/illness is a behavioral or mental pattern that causes significant distress or impairment of personal functioning- - effects your mood, thinking and behavior.”

Anxiety – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in

everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which

transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds

in Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:6-7 (NIV)

Anxiety: Some form of anxiety is common (general depression) it is when ongoing sign and symptoms caused a frequent episodes of stress and it affects your ability to functions during a period of time.

•The age of Anxiety is different depending on the subcategories

Treatments: prayer, individual therapy, biofeedback, yoga, meditation, and medication.

Some know common medication: Vistaril, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, Effexor, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, and highly addictive benzodiazepines like Klonopin andXanax

Major Depression

Depression -

Seventeen million individuals suffer from Major Depression in any given year. (National Alliance on Mental Illness, (NAMI, 2018)

Untreated depression is the number caused of death by suicide. “Suicide Statistics,” Suicide.org.

The primary treatment for depression is general therapy. Medication is typically prescribed only if the illness is adversely affecting the individual’s social, work, or educational functioning.” Dr. Darryl M Coleman.

• When to refer: When the level of concerns and anxiety is beyond your level of training.

• You cannot pray chronic or acute level of anxiety, depression, substance abuse away.

• When there is little or no progress• When you and or the person become confused with thoughts or

actions• When and if the person expresses suicide ideas...with or without a

plan

Generalized Anxiety Disorder 6.8 million adults – most likely to affect

women – happens with major depression

Panic Disorder (PD) 6 million adults– more likely to happen to women

Social Anxiety Disorder SAD 15 million adults – equally common among men and women – begins

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)7.7 million adults while the statics
