You will need to produce some factsheets/ help sheets on different mental health services.

Ideally I would like 2 that covers general mental health and 3/4 that target specific mental

illnesses.

What now?<e will meet you with a view to get to start to now you and your experiences. This is so that we can

 7ointly try to mae sense of your experiences. The assessment will in turn provide an opportunity for

us to discuss things that may be helpful for dealing with your experiences.

 !fter we have concluded your initial assessment there are a number of possible outcomes-

1. <e, alongside you and any family members/friends, might agree that your experiences are

strongly suggestive of psychosis and offer you three years of arly Intervention in Psychosis

service.

o 5ou may need a combination of  8edication and Therapy and may have to try out

several types of medications in order find the one that suits you best.

o 5ou may also benefit from taling therapy. 5ou can choose to have your therapy on a

one to one basis or with your family ( the ey thing to remember is that whilst we will

offer advice, the choice will be yours.

C. If it does not appear that you are experiencing or at high ris of developing psychosis, we will

discuss options with you including-

for people with other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, personality

difficulties etc rather than psychosis.

voices and paranoid thoughts reducing and becoming more able to cope with daily life.

It is a good idea to start maing plans for how you will get your life bac on trac and what support is

needed with this. 5our care co4ordinator can help you mae a plan about what you want to get from

your life and the best services to access to get this help. They can help you identify ways to help you

cope with any symptoms and difficulties you have.

Getting actie and aoiding stress

It>s very good to be active and to start seeing friends again but you need to strie a balance. It>s often

a good idea to build up how much you are doing gradually, maing sure you still have time to relax as

well as being active.

#reenting relapse

'ome people only ever have one episode of psychosis, but some may experience a relapse.

Therefore it is important to mae a plan that helps to prevent you becoming unwell again or to

minimise the severity of any relapse you do experience. This will probably include agreeing on what

needs to be done if certain stresses or symptoms become evident. <e strongly recommend you avoiddrugs and alcohol.

Employment and $olunteering

Returning to structured activity such as wor is often an important part of recovery. <e offer support in

finding either paid or voluntary wor. <e also have access to numerous community services, for

example Richmond 3ellowship, which can provide additional careers advice and help with writing

$>s etc.

Social Groups5ou may find that after a period of illness it is difficult to resume your normal social activities. <e run a

weely social group which provides a safe and welcoming environment to meet new peopleH many of

whom have similar experiences. The social group also provides an opportunity to get involved in

different activities, for example mountain biing, badminton, bowling.

o 8eet and tal to others who have experienced a psychosis.

o Tal to people you trust about your worries.

o 3ind out as much as you can about your psychosis, the arly Intervention Team will be able to

provide you with information or visit our lins page for other websites.

o Investigate ways to manage your stress. 3ind out what causes your stress and wor out how

to deal with it or avoid stressful situations.

o 3ind time in the day to relax and so something that you en7oy to tae your mind off things that

cause you to worry.

o  !ttempt activities, 7obs and training that you en7oy and value.

o ?eep physically well, following a good diet by cutting down on taeaways and fried food and

eating of fruit and vegetables every day, and tae regular exercise.

Remember these are 7ust a few general tips. veryone who develops a psychosis will find many

things that are helpful and unhelpful and should loo to develop lists of their own.

What doesn%t help?o Putting yourself under more stress than you need to

o Isolating yourself, avoiding friends and not taling to others

o 6etting involved in negative relationships ( where there is a lot of negative comments and

criticism

o #sing too much alcohol and using drugs such as speed, "'+, ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis

that can delay recovery and encourage relapse in psychosis

Remember these are 7ust a few general tips. veryone who develops a psychosis will find manythings that are helpful and unhelpful and should loo to develop lists of their own.

What causes #sychosis?

The causes of psychosis are still not fully understood and it is liely that there are a number of

reasons why people develop psychosis including-

Times of extreme stress such as relationship difficulties, families splitting up, parents arguing, exams

or unemployment.

 There is a strong relationship between use of drugs such as cannabis, speed and

cocaine and the development of psychotic symptoms.

 

<hen people don>t have enough sleep they can begin to see things differently and can experience

psychotic symptoms e.g. they may hear voices when no one is there.

 

3or a few people, psychosis is the result of an underlying medical illness, usually one

involving the brain and nervous system.
