The Children’s Home Society of Idaho was founded in 1908 by O.P. Christian. who worked alongside several community leaders, including C.W. Moore and Governor Frank R. Gooding, to provide a place for children who were roaming city streets, begging and stealing food. Cynthia A. Mann, a school teacher and philanthropist, donated the land on which the home was completed in 1910 and still elegantly stands at 740 Warm Springs Avenue. The building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

When foster care came about in the late 1960s, orphanages were soon to become obsolete. Children’s Home Society worked with Boise State University to determine the greatest need in the community for children at that time. Studies showed that there was a lack of mental, emotional and behavioral health care for

children, especially those in low-income families. Thus, a transition began in 1975 from orphanage to outpatient mental health clinic.

TODAY The average number of clients served by both locations each day is 90. The majority (85 percent) of those treated are children who are considered “at-risk” due to their economic, physical, and/or emotional status. More than 80 percent of those treated at the center cannot pay or co-pay for services. Yet, they are treated anyway.

Common conditions that are treated include family conflict, bullying, trauma, abuse, grief, self-esteem issues, eating disorders, bipolar disorders, and foster care placement, just to name a few.

IT ALL STARTED IN 1908

The Children’s Home Society remains and functions today as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which operates the Warm Springs Counseling Centers. Through it’s community support program, the Children’s Home Society funds counseling services, psychological evaluations, families who can not afford proper care and more. For clinicians we provide on going education and training through the Warm Springs Training Institute (WSTI).

4 The Children’s Home Society operates two counseling centers (Warm Springs Counseling Center - WSCC), one located in the Children’s Home Society’s building on Warm Springs Avenue and one in Meridian, near Eagle and Overland.

1During the 60 years as an orphanage, over 4,900 children that came through the doors were not adopted, and over 2,500 children were adopted. Those original records remain with the Children’s Home Society of Idaho and were digitized in 2011 for safe keeping and easier dissemination. These records are available to the individual whose name is on the record and immediate family members.

2 The name Warm Springs Counseling Center was adopted as we transitioned from an adoption agency to a center providing services for troubled youth.

5 We have clinicians with many skills and certifications, including Foster Care Therapy, Animal Assisted Play TherapyTM, ADHD Therapy, families with interruptions in care, families who have adopted a high needs child and more.
