We are a progressive school that caters to all Jews and those who seek a meaningful Jewish life, and yes, more so amidst a pandemic. In fact, at times of uncertainty, one of the things that we can count on is our unwavering commitment to each other and the immeasurable returns gained through being a part of our Jewishly Warm and Relevant synagogue community. As a religious school team, we want to assure our families that our school will continue in the fall with a high-quality program that ensures primarily the safety and health of our learners and staff. We are planning learning opportunities that can be modified for in-person, distance learning, or hybrid models to meet those demands. Learners will experience a tailored curriculum that balances Jewish values including mitzvot, culture, Hebrew, including art, music, special events, and more. We will continue to emphasize community and relationship building, and our faculty is working together, thinking creatively about how to do so. We also recognize that not all learners thrive in an online learning environment. Therefore, next year, distance learning will include smaller groups, consistent routines, and individual attention to learners. Our complete plans for TBD religious school need to follow the state and local public health guidelines and will be announced more definitively as those guidelines emerge. The public health situation is having an unprecedented effect on our economy, including our temple. No family will be turned away, and no child will be left behind due to financial hardship. Please request scholarship/financial assistance from Rabbi Lachtman or our finance committee. With gratitude to the generosity of some of our families, we will support you financially and emotionally as a valued member of our family. Our team and I look forward to seeing our children benefiting from continuing to develop their Jewish identities, growing their Jewish roots, and becoming familiar with the wisdom of our tradition and community engagement now more than ever. חֲ זַ ק חֲ זַ ק וְ נִ תְ חַ ַ קMay we go from strength to strength, Gal Kessler Rohs, Education Director In partnership with our dedicated TBD Religious School faculty, Rabbi Alan Lachtman (since 1976), Cantor Orly Campbell (since 2019), Cantor Mike Sirota (since 2020), Doris Robin (since 1976), Janice Robertson (since 1982), Dr. Jacquelyn Green (since 1988), Lindy Bornstein (since 2017), Lauren Bailey (since 2017), Steven Berman (since 2017), Susan Grodsky (since 2017), Miriam Beltran (since 2019) and all those valuable community members who step up to educate our children!

From "Drop off Judaism" to family learning Our 27 religious school sessions are scheduled and are now official. We reconvene school again in just over two months, on August 30th. As we face a pandemic, and protect our families by sheltering at home, we are determined to continue our cycle of learning. True, we are uncertain of what the learning medium may be, but we are committed to Jewish engagement. Yes, we long for the laughter of our students running around in the Kohl playground, chitchatting in the amphitheater, and we crave for cooking hands at Union Station, for the touching of hearts of Holocaust survivor guest speakers, and for the chanting of Hebrew trope in our B’nai Mitzvah classes. The internet has shifted Religious School learning from “drop off Judaism” (Rabbi Lachtman’s paraphrase!) to Jewish family education. From the corners of our homes, our hearts were touched with the dedication of our staff, the story telling of Miss Doris, the dynamics between our students, and the hills and valleys of Israel. Our school included family pet members, like the Cass’ family pet fish who shared moments of learning joy with Guinea Pig Caramel Stieglitz. We are physically apart, and yet we have profound our knowledge of each other. Be it through the internet, or otherwise, our curricular year encompasses several highlights, all in an effort to raise students Jewishly, committed to the legacy of our Rabbi, and temple mission. In addition to the progression of learning through grades, with themes such as Mitzvot, Torah figures, Shabbat and the structure of our synagogue, we have annual family school programs. Our programs include a Purim Carnival, Passover Model Seder, Holocaust program for our older grades, Israel Day, and a nature themed Tu Bishvat engagement for our school. We also partner with the Jewish Federation’s programs like Shabbaton weekend away for our 3rd grade and older students. Every Person Has A Name is a Federation 25 hour Holocaust vigil of the reading of names of those who perished in the Shoah. Our students are encouraged to sign up for name reading as part of their religious school outreach to the community. The shape of our students’ learning is not only determined by the dedication of our educators, or medium of learning. Nor is it solely the programming and scheduling that is administratively determined. Learning is largely credited to parental engagement, and the motivation reflected within the family towards our mission. As we think about the coming school year, together with the needs of our children to build upon their Jewish identity, slots for ideas are being filled enthusiastically. We ask you the following: What would you like to see your child engage in? How would you like to shape the Passover seder? What elements of Israel would you like reflected in our Holy Land day? Do you have a talent you would like to contribute to our nature Tu Bishvat learning? Or a Hamantaschen recipe you’d like to share? Let’s chat about it. We are just a Zoom call away! (Darling bonding image above shows Hannah, Emily and Caramel Stiglitz) Shabbat Shalom, -Gal Kessler Rohs, Education Director
