FLORIDA SOUTHERN ALL-TIME COACHES

Florida Southern’s first intercollegiate soccer team took the field in 1957, coached by Jim Bush (far right with the bowtie). In their inaugural season, the Moccasins went 1-3-2, playing in the Florida Intercollegiate Conference withJacksonville, Rollins and Stetson. They tied Stetson, 1-1, in their first game, and earned their first win on November 2,at the expense of Jacksonville, beating the Dolphins, 3-1. Hernando Clavijo scored the first ever goal for theMoccasins, while Eddie Kalaska (kneeling and wearing #13) scored the first game-winner by snapping a 1-1 tie in thethird quarter against Jacksonville.

One year later, Florida Southern won the first of its five FIC titles. The Moccasins also won the league in 1965, 1966,1967, and 1971. The ’71 team earned a bid to the NCAA Small College Southern Regional Tournament, hosted byRollins, so far the only time the Moccasins have advanced to any type of NCAA postseason play.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN ALL-AMERICANS BILL CURRIE – 1961 Bill Currie, Florida Southern’s first soccer All-American, was also the school’s second All-American in any sport, after basketball player Don Tobin had been honored four years earlier. Currie came to Florida Southern from Rochester, New York, and was a three-year letterman for the Moccasins from 1959-61. In each of those seasons he was All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference as the top goalkeeper in the league, and as a junior and senior, he was Florida Southern’s MVP. In 1960, Currie became the first Moccasin goalkeeper to post a shutout when he blanked Rollins and Emory in back-to-back games, and as a senior in 1961, he set a record that still stands today with 201 saves. Since that is the only season in which his save total is available, it’s likely Currie would be first or second on the Mocs’ career list as well.

JOHN HAYES – 1965 As a freshman from Sanford, Florida in 1961, John Hayes served as All-American Bill Currie’s backup in goal; and as a sophomore, he took over between the posts on a regular basis. After sitting out a season, Hayes returned to school in 1964, and spent two more years as Florida Southern’s starting goalkeeper. Among his highlights was a 22-save shutout against the University of Miami as a junior that was the Mocs’ first win over the powerful Hurricanes in seven tries. A year later, the Mocs won the Florida Intercollegiate Conference with an undefeated league record, and Hayes was named to the all-conference team.

BRIAN BAIN – 1967 Just as John Hayes took over for Bill Currie and eventually won All-American honors, Brian Bain took over for Hayes and did the same. Bain, however, won the starting job as a freshman and remains the only four-year starting goalkeeper (1966-69) in team history. During his All-American sophomore season, Bain set a school record that stood for 30 years with a 1.20 goals against average, and his career totals of nine shutouts with a 1.82 GAA stood as records for 28 years. He still ranks in the top three of every career goalkeeping category at Florida Southern, though complete save totals are unavailable from that era. Originally from Union, New Jersey, Bain was also a two-time All-State selection while that team was still in effect, and Florida Southern’s 1968 MVP.

JIM DAWSEY – 1969 The only Florida Southern field player to earn All-American honors was Jim Dawsey, who played for the Moccasins at the same time as All-American goalkeeper Brian Bain (1966-69). Dawsey was a Lakeland native who made an immediate impact by earning All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference status as a freshman. A four-year starter at forward and three-year captain, Dawsey graduated as the school’s career leader with 28 goals, a figure that still ranks fifth in team history. He also ranks 10th on the career points list, and would certainly be higher if complete assist totals were available. He still remained in the top five until 1996. Dawsey led the Moccasins in goals as a junior, and in goals (11) and points (24) as a senior when he was Florida Southern’s Most Valuable Player.

AHMAD BELFON – Academic All-American (1997, ’98, ’99) Florida Southern soccer’s first Academic All-American, Ahmad Belfon (also known as Junior) was a four-year starting defender for the Moccasins from 1996-99. During that time, Florida Southern had four of the top six defensive seasons in team history, with a total of 24 shutouts and a 1.09 goals against average. Twice during that period, the Mocs had a team goals against average under 1.00, and in 1997 they set school records with 11 shutouts and a 0.62 GAA. In Belfon’s senior year, the Moccasins set another team record by allowing just 8.8 shots per match while going 13-5-2, and allowing more than one goal in only three of their 20 games played. Belfon also scored five goals with five assists in his career, and his 65 career starts are the fourth most by a Moccasin.

GIVI KOKAIA – Academic All-American (2010) During his four years at Florida Southern, there were few athletes that combined athletic ability and academic success as well as Givi Kokaia. In 49 games with the Moccasins, Kokaia scored 22 goals and had 13 assists for a total of 57 career points. A two-time Academic All-District selection, 201 was Kokaia’s best in a Florida Southern uniform as the senior forward tied for the team lead with nine goals and added 10 assists. His 27 points ranked sixth in the Sunshine State Conference, and his 1.80 points per game were third. The Moccasin co-captain would go on to earn First Team Academic All-American honors after finishing sixth in the nation in assists per game, and 24th in points per game.

Terry Darby played three seasonsfor the Moccasins and was theteam MVP in two of them. Hescored a total of 27 goals, and hiscareer point total of 66 still ranksseventh in team history despiteplaying less than 30 total games.

Tom Arthur is one of only twoMoccasins who are 3-time MVPs.He had 11 goals and nine assists asa senior in 1977, for a total of 31points in 12 games. Arthur still ranksamong the top-10 career scoringleaders in team history.

Bobby Kramig was the Mocs’ 1980and ’81 Most Valuable Player. Whenhe had 308 saves during those twoseasons. He ranks second in teamhistory in career saves and is nowthe women’s head coach at theUniversity of Miami (OH).

Jeff Janszen set a school record that still stands today by making 26 saves in a game at the University of South Florida in 1983. He’s one of three Moccasin goalkeepers to record 20 or more saves, with Bobby Kramig doing it four times, and Tim Moore doing it twice.

Moccasin Hat Tricks Since the men’s soccer program was started in 1957, the Moccasins have had a total of 68 hat tricks (three or more goals in one game), most recently by Zach Hofstetter on October 12, 2011 at Saint Leo.

Among the 68 hat tricks are a school-record 10 by Alan Grossman from 1971-74. The Mocs’ all-time scoring leader had four as a sophomore, set another school record with five as a junior and added one more as a senior. In four of his hat tricks, Grossman scored at least four goals, including three times as a junior.

Several others have had multiple hat tricks in their careers, including Terry Darby (four from 1963-65); Jim Dawsey (four from 1966-69); Frank Bresk (four from 1990-93); and Chris Crawshaw (three from 1994-97).

Some of the other notable hat trick performances:

• Frank Bresk was the last player to have two hat tricks in one year, doing so in 1993 vs. Palm Beach Atlantic and Clearwater Christian.

• Alan Grossman began the 1973 season with four straight hat tricks, scoring a total of 18 goals in those games. Combined with the final game of 1972, he had five consecutive hat tricks over a two-year span.

• On four occasions the Mocs have had two hat tricks in the same game, most recently in a 10-0 win over Ave Maria in 2010 when Zach Hostetter did it in the first half, and Jared Bellingar did it in the second. The first time was Sept. 18, 1973 in a 13-0 win vs. Flagler when Alan Grossman scored six goals and Andy MacKintosh scored three. The second was a 16-0 win over Florida Bible College on Sept. 12, 1987 when Bobby Pineiro and Steve Lose each scored three goals. Paul Sluyter (4) and Peter Andersen (3) then doubled up in a 13-1 win vs. Southeastern on Sept. 8, 1998.

• Four freshmen have had a hat trick for the Moccasins in their debut, including Andy MacKintosh against Flagler in 1973. Pineiro and Lose each did so in the 1987 win over Florida Bible, and Asa Pepia did it against Bryant in 2002.

• Zach Hofstetter has the fastest hat trick by a Moccasin, scoring three goals in the first 11:35 of a 10-0 win over Ave Maria on October 23, 2010. He’s one of six players to record a hat trick by halftime with Alan Grossman scoring five goals during the first half of a 13-0 win over Flagler in 1973.

• Terry Darby is the only Moccasin with a hat trick in a game Florida Southern lost. On October 2, 1965, he scored all four goals in a 5-4 loss at Emory.

• Four Moccasins have had a hat trick in a Sunshine State Conference game: Frank Bresk in a 4-3 win at Saint Leo on Oct. 23, 1991; Patrik Dandanell in a 6-1 win vs. Florida Tech on September 21, 2005; Givi Kokaia, who made Florida Tech the victim again with three goals in a 4-2 victory in 2009; and Zach Hofstetter, in a 4-0 win at Saint Leo on October 12, 2011.

Did You Know? In 1997, Florida Southern played and won five consecutive 1-0 games, and midfielder Nathan Garcia assisted the goal in four of those wins. One of them came against Montevallo, with Tim Cooper scoring the Mocs’ first “Golden Goal” since the NCAA switched to a sudden-death overtime format that season. Did You Know? Steve Jacobs is the only Moccasin in team history to score a goal, or record a point in the first four games of his career. A freshman from Bermuda, Jacobs scored single goals against Emory, Rollins, Stetson and Miami to start the 1962 season, and ended up as the Mocs’ leading scorer that year with seven goals in nine games.

The last Moccasin to score a goal in his first three games was Mike Nance in 1999, though Nance was a sophomore who transferred from the University of South Florida. The last time a freshman did it was 1993, when Patrick Straub began his career with four goals and three assists in his first three collegiate games.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS

Fastest Goal at the Start of a Match ................................... 10/25/77 Eight players have scored goals in the first minute of a match, led by Nick Koumantzelis who scored just 15 seconds into play vs. Eckerd in 1977. The Mocs eventually lost though, 4‐3. Paul Finney is the only other Moccasin to score in the first 30 seconds, notching his goal just 25 seconds into a match against Jacksonville in 1964. The Mocs also lost that game. Viktor Bakkioui was the last Moccasin with a goal in the first minute, needing only 43 seconds to score against Palm Beach Atlantic last year. The Moccasins didn’t score again in that game until the second overtime period for a 2‐1 victory. Four of the eight times they’ve scored in the game’s opening minute, the Mocs have lost. The last time the Mocs allowed a goal in the first minute of a game was at Belmont Abbey on October 8, 2011. Timmi Borges DaSilva gave the Crusaders a 1‐0 lead that day, but the Mocs came back to earn a 2‐2 tie.

Shortest Time Between Goals .............................................. 10/9/86 Teammates Keith Spresser (below left) and Frank Stork (below right) scored just six seconds apart early in the first half of a 7‐0 win over Warner Southern. That’s one second shy of the NCAA record held by Ian Martin and Josh Dukes of Florida International, set against St. Thomas in 1979.

Shortest Time Between Goals by the Same Player ................ 9/12/87 Okay, so everyone scored in a 16‐0 win vs. Florida Bible College in 1987, but Steve Lose scored back‐to‐back goals just eight seconds apart. He shares the NCAA all‐divisions record with George Moyssidis of Florida International.

Two Penalty Kicks in One Game ........................................... 9/23/89 Penalty kicks really aren’t that unusual, but only twice on record in 55 years has a Moccasin converted two in one game. Most recently it was accomplished by Mike Bauder on September 23, 1989, in a 2‐2 tie against Florida Atlantic. Each of those penalty kicks tied the game, with the first coming in the 39th minute, and the second one coming in the 66th. The only other Moccasin to make two penalty kicks in one game was their all‐time goals leader Alan Grossman, who did it in a 6‐1 win over Tampa in 1973.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN HALL OF FAMERS

Jim Bush, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2005 Jim Bush spent 30 years at Florida Southern and served as head coach of the Moccasins from their beginning in 1957, until his retirement following the 1980 season. He compiled a career record of 115‐118‐23, won five Florida Intercollegiate Conference titles, and led the Mocs to their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1971. Bush also coached the Florida Southern men’s tennis team for 27 years (1959‐85) and put together a mark of 283‐209, and the FSC women’s tennis team in 1979 and ‘80 with a record of 33‐16.

Alan Grossman, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2006

In 2006, Jim Bush was joined by one of his former players, Alan Grossman, who played at FSC from 1971‐74. He set season records that still stand with 22 goals and 47 points in 1973, and also owns the school record for goals in a match (6), goals in a career (47), and most career hat tricks (10). His career total of 97 points stood as a school record for 31 years before it was broken in 2005. He was the Mocs’ leading scorer three times, including his senior year when he moved to the back line in order to help the defense.

Brian Bain, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2010

Brian Bain was a 1967 All‐American and remains the only four‐year starting goalkeeper in team history (1966‐69). Though complete save totals from that era are unavailable, he still ranks in the top three of every career goalkeeping category in the team record book. After his graduation, Bain taught in the Polk County school system for 35 years and was well‐known for his involvement in high school sports, particularly volleyball and wrestling. In 2001, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Cliff Dixon, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2011

Cliff Dixon came to Florida Southern in 1995 after one year at the University of Central Florida, and spent most of the next three years as the Moccasins’ starting goalkeeper. He was named Second Team All‐Sunshine State Conference as a junior, and as a senior he was both First Team All‐SSC and Second Team All‐South Region. That year, in 1997, he set school records that still stand for goals against average (0.61) and shutouts (11), while making 67 saves. Dixon’s overall career numbers include a team record 17 shutouts, while his 1.19 goals against average is second all‐time.

The Founding Father of Florida Southern Soccer, 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee Mohammed Sabie Though he never served as head coach of the men’s soccer team, Mohammed Sabie would have to be considered the patriarch of the Florida Southern soccer program. As a student at Florida Southern in 1954, Sabie was instrumental in organizing a men’s club soccer program, which later reached varsity status in 1957. He also played for the early Moccasins and after his graduation in 1957, took his soccer expertise to Kentucky where he is credited with being one of the founding fathers of soccer in that state. He coached and taught at Morehead State University for 38 years and is a member of that school’s Hall of Fame as well. Sabie was also a coach for the Iraqi national team in the 1968 Olympics. In March of 2007, Sabie became the third person inducted into the Florida Southern Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions to soccer. He joined Jim Bush, the Moccasin coach from 1957‐80, and Alan Grossman, who played for the Mocs from 1971‐74, and still holds the school’s career goals record. Shortly after his induction into the FSC Athletic Hall of Fame, Sabie passed away in Kentucky at the age of 77. Mohammed Sabie

On October 10, 2000, Trevor Clark’s overtime goal atBarry gave the Moccasins a 3-2 victory and their last winagainst a team ranked #1 in the country.

RECORD NIGHT AT ROLLINS Only once has a Florida Southern soccer match been decided by penalty kicks, and it came in the first round of the 2003 Sunshine State Conference Tournament at Rollins.

Since it was the first time the SSC had staged a postseason tournament since 1981, the Tars would actually have to be considered the defending champions of a sort. Ranked #18 in the country, Rollins was also looking to possibly secure its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 21 years.

The Tars were 13‐2‐2 overall and seeded third in the SSC Tournament, while the Moccasins were 8‐8‐1, seeded sixth, and looking to end the year on a high note. Statistically, Rollins had the edge for most of the night, but a goal by Pete Schiebel in the 26

th minute had given Florida Southern

a 1‐0 lead. It stood up until Ryan Dodds tied the game for Rollins with 11 minutes remaining.

When overtime ended with the game still tied 1‐1, the result was officially a tie, but penalty kicks were used to determine which team would advance to the SSC semi‐finals. With Rollins going first, each team took five penalty kicks, but each went 5‐for‐5, sending the game to sudden death penalty kicks. The first time one team scored and the other didn’t, the game would be over. It took 11 rounds of sudden death PKs for that to happen, and even more amazing was that neither team missed until the very end.

On the Tars’ 16th attempt (the 11

th sudden death attempt),

Moccasin goalkeeper Clint Harris stopped German Vivas, giving Asa Pepia a chance to decide the game for Florida Southern. Having already made one other penalty kick in the tie‐breaker, Pepia made it 2‐for‐2, bringing the game to a close just over three hours after it began.

Though there are no official records, it’s believed to be the longest game in NCAA Division II history, and matched a 16‐round tie‐breaker by Clarkson (NY) and Plattsburgh State (NY) in the first round of a 1993 Division III Regional Tournament. Clarkson won that one, 11‐10, and it will be nearly impossible for any two teams to equal what Florida Southern and Rollins accomplished by each making 15 in a row before a miss.

In addition to Pepia, the Moccasins also got two PKs from Keith Butler, Pete Schiebel, Clay Roberts, Travis Hobgood, and Panu Purhonen. Four others made their only attempt during the tie‐breaker, all of them during the sudden death portion: Jonathan Streets, Brian Miller, Adam Lemnouni and Doug Hughes. Harris had 11 saves during regulation and overtime before making his biggest one at the end.

Ironically, Rollins’ Chris Cerroni, who made two PKs during the tie‐breaker, bounced one off the left post early in the first half that would have given the Tars a 1‐0 lead.

THE 1971 NCAA SMALL COLLEGE TOURNAMENTFlorida Southern’s only trip to the NCAA playoffs happened in 1971, when the Moccasins earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Small College South Regional by winning the Florida Intercollegiate Conference. They got that bid by defeating Rollins 1‐0 in the final game of the regular season when freshman Frank Hanraets scored with three seconds to play in overtime, assisted by Richard Brelsford.

Rollins also received a bid and served as the tournament host, with Loyola (MD) and James Madison completing the field. With each team playing two games, the Mocs lost to Loyola 4‐0 in the opening round, before dropping a 3‐0 decision the next day to James Madison. Loyola won the region title with a 7‐2 win over Rollins.

Florida Southern goalkeeper Clint Harris had 11 saves in the Mocs’ 2003 SSC Tournament game at Rollins. That number still stands as the record for the conference tournament, though it’s been equaled three times. Since the tournament was resurrected in 2003, only one player has ever had a hat trick, with Rollins’ Chris Cerroni scoring three goals for the Tars in a 3-0 win over Florida Tech in the 2006 semifinals.
