2010-11 Season Outlook

2010-11 Norwich Men’s Basketball5

The Norwich men’s basket-ball team wrapped up their 2009-10season with a .500 record of 13-13,having gone 8-10 in conference play. They controlled the game on theirhome court in Andrews Hall, winning8 of 12 contests played at Norwich.

Head coach Paul Booth en-ters his 18th season at the helm of theCadets’ 2010-11 program and has apromising, experienced squad takingthe court. Having graduated only twoseniors, Booth returns his top fourstatistical leaders.

Josh Cabrera will captain theCadets this season. According toBooth, Cabrera is high-achieving,both academically and athletically and“embodies everything a captainshould be” by setting a high standardfor his teammates and making deci-sions based on the wellness of theteam, not just the individual.

One of the focuses for theCadets’ 2010-11 campaign is consis-tency. “Last year we proved we canplay with anyone in the league on anygiven night,” says Booth. “We want to

become more consistent throughoutthe season, raise the bar to the levelof play regardless of the opponent.”

As can be expected, the goalis to challenge for the GNAC Cham-pionship and win a berth to theNCAA Tournament. “Given our tal-ent and experience I expect we will bein the mix” Booth stated, “however inall our years in this league this may bethe best year in terms of parity. Weare going to have to play well everynight to achieve our goal.”

This season will be the firsttime a core group of guys have beenable to play together in maroon andgold for two or three consecutive sea-sons.

“We had a young group lastseason, young in a lot of ways,” saysBooth. “From the experience factor,we hope to mature to play consis-tently on the road as well as at home.”

Booth is excited about manyof his returning athletes, includingCori Boston, who transferred to theteam last season. “We’re excited abouthaving Cori for a full year,” saysBooth. “We have a full preseason withhim and to get him in game shape.”

Booth expects Jaren Jeffcoatto be a leader on and off the court.Jeffcoat played over 600 minutes lastseason, averaging 13.3 points a game.He earned a .695 free-throw percent-age and average 5.6 rebounds percontest. Jaren stepped up in a lot oftight games last season. For us to getto the post season we will need himto have a good senior year.”

Two other upper classmenthat will impact the season are juniorAntonio Davis and Ryan Williams.Davis, 6-6 post player, led the teamwith 7.9 reb per game(which wasgood for 5th in the GNAC and was

the third leading scorer at 11.8 pergame. “Antonio has really evolved asperson and as a player. He epitomizeswhat Norwich Basketball is about.”

Williams, a 6-2 guard fromTexas had a tremendous first year inNorthfield. He was 9th in the con-ference in 3point shooting percentageat just under 40% and was fourth onthe team in scoring at 11.5ppg. “Ryanhas NBA 3 point range and reallystretches the defense. He allowsother to be better players because de-fenses must pay a great deal of atten-tion to his perimeter shooting”

And then there is the captain, who is returning from a red-shirtedsophomore season. “Cabrera is acerebral type of player,” says Booth. He’s not a guy who is going to be get-ting 25 points a game, but we will winbecause of him. He’s a jack of alltrades. He doesn’t necessarily excel inany particular category, but he is verygood in a lot of them. His injury re-ally impacted our team-I am very gladto see him back in uniform.”

The Norwich Cadets will offi-cially begin their 2010-11 campaignon the road at Southern VermontCollege, tipping off at 7 p.m. onMonday, Nov. 15.
