Ladies Premier 2 vs UWA (Won 1 - 0) 2010-07-18 Best: E. Hall, S. Billingham, S. Tweddle/S. Pomphrey WOOO! First win of the season and to the top team as well. Fantastic job girls! It was a great game from start to finish you worked so well together, your passing was excellent and play flowed! Great drag flick off short corner saw Erin get the goal for us, you all did extremely well to keep them goaless! Lets keep up the great work girls! Ladies Premier 2 vs Fremantle (Won 1 - 0) 2010-07-24 Best: E. Mahmud, E. Kelly, C. Ferguson Second win against another top team, two in a row great work girls! It was a strong and fast game, you all had great determination throughout. Welcome back Lee from injury you had a ripper of a game and did an amazing save in the last dying minutes of the game! We had many great team passing plays that resulted in a fantastic goal scored by Courtney across goals. Its really great to see you all come together on the field and all have a great game. Bring on the next game!

Ladies Premier 2 vs NC Raiders (Drew 2 - 2) 2010-07-31 Best: A. Clark, S. Tweddle, L. Jarvis Good game girls, unfortunatley we couldnt come away with a win, however we still got 1 point. Sometimes we need to slow it down to work it up the field and keep posession. This was Emma's last game and she has been a great team member and we wish her a safe journey home and the best of wishes. Our two goals scored were amazing, Aimee took a deflection to score us our first goal and Lee's hit grabbed a stick for a deflection for our second. Great team work all round! PROVISIONAL LEAGUE Mens Provisional 1 vs Old Aquinians (Won 3 - 1) Best: M. Jensen, R. Spedding, J. Lister Goals: S. Walsh (2), A. Wragg Another good win against a team that challenged us in the first round, we are building some really good form at the right time of the season - our finals possibilities look strong which is outstanding for our first year in this grade. Another big challenge next week - keep it up. Ladies Provisional 1 vs CT Pirates (Drew 1 - 1) Best: B. MacDonald, A. Hall/R. Oakey/H. Menegola Goals: B. MacDonald Good game with everyone putting in second and third efforts fo the full 70 minutes. An unlucky umpiring decision gave the Pirates their goal - the score line didn't reflect the difference in the teams. Good driving down the line - excellent linking play and some solid work in the midfield combined to give us about 80% of the play. It's a win every week from now on girls - we can do it! Ladies Provisional 2 Gold - BYE Ladies Provisional 3 Gold vs CT Pirates (Lost 0 - 5) Best: A. McCall, A. Wheatley, N. Reghupathy Despite the scoreline it was a pretty good game against a quality opposition we had some short bursts of some high quality play where we were beating opposition players one on one passing stick to stick and making great tackles, its good to see the rapport amongst the group with everyone being supportive not just after but during the game, not sure who got best players but the best game I have seen from 3 players Allison, Alecia and Jasmine with 4 games to go with our improvement as a group we should be pushing every team we play.

METROPOLITAN LEAGUE Mens Metro 1 vs Wolves (Won 2 - 1) Best: M. Watton, J. Pickering, J. Cooke Goals: M. Lyons, R. Weddikkara Another hard fought win against Wolves after conceding one early. As it was in the first round, it was the slug who found himself in the right place at the right time nestled in close to the keeper to score the winner, with his shot hitting the roof from 2 ft out (a sight to behold). Ladies Metro 1 vs NC Raiders (Drew 0 - 0) Best: J. Coad, A. Scholten, L. O'Sullivan/M. Margetts No report Mens Metro 2 Gold vs Wolves No report Mens Metro 3 Black vs Vic Park (Lost 0 - 3) No report Mens Metro 3 Gold vs Kwinana (Lost 0 - 1) 2010-07-31 Best: M. Willis, D. Walker, T. McEntee/D. Kidd After a really, really, really (borderline outstanding) great first 20 mins, Kwinana split our Mid Field open and began to control the game. After an early and unlucky goal against us, we managed to recover and get a few good plays happening. A public service announcement though...don't drink the water from the Wake residence. After David's rage last week, another Wake found himself in trouble when Matt Wake took matters into his own hands late in the second half to receive a Yellow card. Tim (or cockroach as he was called on field) tried a few new UFC moves when provoked and was issued 2 warnings, but no naughty box for him this week. Ladies Veterans Div 2 vs NC Raiders (Lost 1 - 4) We started off like we were all half asleep with the opposition making a fast play forward. Unfortunately the opposition were fast the entire game which put a lot of pressure on our defense. Nicky did a great job holding back and taking over some of the forward play and Lindy did a fantastic job keeping out many goals, I'm sure it would have been a bigger defeat otherwise. When we did get our forward play going we looked good. Teresa kept her stick to the ground and managed to get the ball off the opposition many times and put in our only goal for the night, again great positioning. It was a relief to have two extra subs this week and we thank Gail and Robin for filling in again. Better luck next week girls. Mens Midweek Vets vs Fremantle (Lost 2 - 4) Best: M. Starling, T. Barrett/M. Watson, A. Etelaaho/M. Lyons Goals: G. Hunt, J. Moncrieff Considering we had to pull-in a lot of players from weekend vets due to a spate of injuries and illnesses, and Crowey's ongoing inability to keep his legs closed whenever a striker is nearby, this wasn't a bad result against the competition leaders.

Mens Over 40 Division 2 vs Riverside Lions (Drew 1 - 1) Best: L. Bint, G. Ranford, D. Loffell Goals: D. Beckwith An extremely disappointing result - we literally dominated 80-90% of the game but could only put 1 goal away. Will have to do better if we're going to have a good finals. Mens Over 40 Division 4 vs Whitford (Drew 2 - 2) 2010-07-24 Best: T. Patton, S. Girling, G. Singh Goals: D. Stonehouse, S. Girling We played a great game against whitford. Initially we dominated creating many chances. In the second quarter Whitford scored a couple of quick goals but we regrouped and leveled in the second half, being a bit unlucky in having a third would-be goal disallowed for an elevated stick. It was great game hard run, hard fought and enjoyed by all.

Mens Over 50 Division 1 vs Harlequins (Won 7 - 2) Best: C. Howell, P. Matthews, A. Reynolds Goals: G. Hunt (3), P. Matthews (2), K. Harper, R. Chesny Playing Harlies was going to be tough but having the home advantage and playing in front of the huge crowd of supporters was what this team needed to beat our arch rivals. This was our most physical game of the season that started slowly but quickly gained momentum. An even first half playing end to end hockey with both defences having to work overtime and give it their all to get any goals scored. In the second half the boys came out firing with some slick passing that caught the Harlies on the back foot that set up many shots at goal. Well done to Greg on scoring a hat-trick. It was good to see Greg’s Mum, Andy’s Mum and Whip’s Mum all there supporting their sons and remembering the last time they were together watching their boys play was 35 years ago when they were young 17 year olds. If only they had video cameras back then. Next week we have an umpiring bye. Mens Over 50 Division 2 vs Rockingham (Drew 0 - 0) 2010-07-24 Best: C. Slattery, M. Jolliffe, B. Morrison Good to be back at home after a long stint away but unfortunately the aroma wafting in from the bar adversly effected our performance. Rockingham dominated most of the game and if not for Slats and some excellent goalkeeping from Mike Jolliffe we probably would have been beaten. Another game at home next week will hopefully see us back to our previous good form.

Mens Over 50 Division 3 vs Hale (Won 2 - 0) 2010-08-01 Best: T. Jobson, R. Nottage, G. Bowater Goals: T. Jobson, R. Wood Guys a win but still be are not captialising on goals missed. The Goalie was good but he was outside the goals and we could not get it through the gap. Back to the drawing board. Well done Tim good game Mens Over 60 vs Wolves 4 (Won on Forfeit) We enjoyed a good practice game with the Wolves players who did come along, after being awarded the game on forfeit. Giving Wolves a few guys to make up their numbers and swapping goalies made this more interesting. Goalie Geoff produced a run of speccie saves, and gave us a taste of the frustrations he regularly dishes up to opposition forwards. Good form started to show in a few areas which have caused problems in recent weeks. Let's hope we can carry this forward into the last part of the season. JUNIORS Boys 11/12A vs OGMHC (Won 8 - 2) Best: Ross, Jordan, Tom Goals: P. Lawther (3), N. Tate (2), J. Clarey, T. Geers, R. Singh No report Girls 11/12A Maroon vs CT Pirates (Won 5 - 2) Best: M. Silvey, M. Williams, S. Bowyer Goals: M. Silvey (2), K. Passmore, R. Phipps, M. Williams Having a win is always nice, but this week the girls stepped it right up to pump the top team in the comp 5-2. This was the first full 70 minutes of hockey the girls have played all season and if we continue like this no one will knock us off. WELL DONE to each and every one our girls! Girls 11/12A Reserve White vs Westside Wolves (Won 3 - 0) Best: B. Coleman, N. Massey, G. Mason Goals: B. Coleman, G. Mason, N. Massey A good game by everyone. Nikki found the back line many times but could only convert one to a major. Tearne made a few good slides, with Brianna mopping up any that got past. Thanks Monique for filing in and playing a great game.

Boys 11/12B Black vs Mazenod Blue (Lost 0 - 2) 2010-07-30 Best: A. Lynch, K. Hill, A. Bocking No report Girls 11/12B vs St Brigids (Lost 1 - 10) Best: T. Vince, R. Armstrong, E. Duffield/C. Toogood/L. Walkemeyer Goals: L. Walkemeyer We usually match up well against this opposition. Our last game in round 3 saw them get the jump on us with a 2-0 win. Today was a bit different as they have developed into a fast and hard running team. They had 2 scorers today keeping our backs & goalie working hard. Tori was unstoppable - even several hits to her legs could not keep her down. Bec & Emily did everything they could against a determined and well practised opposition. Interestingly - today was only 1 of 3 occasions this year when teams have scored against our opposition - Well done to Laura for a well placed shot. Today was also a game of walking wounded with Tori, Tara, Caitlin & Laura limping around looking for extra sets of goalie pads to wear. A great positive of the game was that our girls never gave up and ran (or limped) the game out. There are 4 weeks left to get back into the top 4 and finals. Happy Birthday to Caitlin - who now has a welt on her knee to remember her 16th Birthday by. Boys 9/10A vs University (Lost 2 - 4) Best: F. Reynolds, J. Coleman, F. Hay Goals: B. De Bes, S. Gibbins We need to start implementing coaching instructions on the pitch. It is very disappointing to set a team game plan and not follow through with it. There is no doubt that we need to understand the importance of marking and contesting the ball. When we do these two things we are a solid team. Moving forward we need to continue to work on our finishing in the goal circle and channel the ball carrier instead of rush tackling.

Again the determination and grit showed by the girls trying to eke out a victory was incredible. This team is a tough bunch who never give up! Girls 9/10A Reserve Gold vs WASPS (Won 2 - 0) Best: S. Matthews, A. Gleave, S. Gerrard Goals: K. Eaton, A. Wangpen Well played girls, we are on a role! A tough game but we worked well under pressure, kept it cool and played it simply. We need to work on switching to the opposition's reverse side, rather than to their flat stick. Having a strong hit when entering the 'D' will give us the opportunity to score many more goals. Thank you so much to all of the girls who came up to play for us, especially on such short notice, you all had a great game. :)

Girls 9/10A vs UWA (Drew 1 - 1) Best: Aimee Clark, Maddy Harper, Ashleigh McNess Gina Boylan Goals: G. Boylan A fantastic tough, hard game of hockey that was a joy to watch. Again a bit of a slow, untidy start with Uni applying a lot of pressure. We worked our way into the game in the second half and after scoring a goal finally got some momentum but just couldn't convert our chances. Lesson 1 - start games with more intensity, Lesson 2 - take our chances.

Managers: The end of the season is fast approaching, and with it, the deadline for yearbook reports. Please start thinking about your short paragraph per player, these will need to be submitted by Monday, August 16th Brad Wake Year book editor 2010.

Boys 9/10B Gold vs Mazenod (Lost 1 - 8) Best: R. Ayris, A. Metcalfe/J. Munns/J. Whiley, L. Dival - Young Goals: A. Toogood Another tough game. We started with some good penetrating runs down the right wing but were unable to convert any opportunities until Austin did some excellent work to bring the ball along the left baseline to push past the keeper and score. We had more chances to score than they did in the first half but our inability to get our feet and bodies into the correct position, get stick to ball and hit the ball resulted in a 1-3 deficit at half time. We worked hard in the second half in patches to create some good chances to score but were unable to put the ball in the net. Our lack of fitness and inexperience in defence cost us 5 goals in the second half. Thanks to Lucas for filling in. Boys 9/10B Gold White - BYE Girls 9/10C vs Joondalup Lakers (Won 8 - 0) Best: A. Rigelsford, A. Widger, C. Lawther/F. Scholten Goals: C. Lawther (2), A. Wangpen (2), A. Rigelsford (2), A. Lewington, A. Widger It was a very early start on a cold morning, and the whole team are to be congratulated on a terrific game. It was very pleasing to see the "great talking" that was going on between team-mates. This team work resulted in some excellent goals. We had a number of multiple goal scorers and several girls who scored their first ever goals - and some great celebrations afterwards!! Well done to Amanda who did a fantastic job for the team in goals. A great win girls - an excellent birthday present for Christina!! Boys 7/8A vs YM Lions (Lost 3 - 6) Best: J. Antoncich, C. Joynes, A. Ranford Goals: J. Antoncich, C. Thompson, A. Ranford The game against YM Lions was even in general field play, however our boys paid the price for not getting back quickly in defence when there was a turn-over and YM Lions were able to take advantage and score. A good even contribution from the Melville boys. Conor Thompson, Ashley Ranford & Josh Antoncich all sored really good goals. Callum

  • 17

Joynes continues to show great improvement with another good game. Matt Stidolph is playing well in goals, there was just a weight of numbers against him and there goals were hard to stop. Girls 7/8A vs Victoria Park (Lost 1 - 2) Best: B. Anderson, E. Hopkinson, N. Matthews/S. Somerville Goals: A. Watson The girls almost had it in the bag. That was the best game we have played against Vic park this season. I really thought we were going to pull it off when we took a 1 goal lead. We had our chances and you should be really proud of yourselves. You played to the coaches instructions and most important of all you didn't give up. Have belief in yourselves that you can beat anyone in your league, because you can! Boys 7/8A Reserve vs OGMHC (Won 2 - 1) 2010-08-01 Best: All Players Goals: W. Waters (2) That sweet smell of success! Yeh Yeh we know it's all about playing the game BUT a win is so good for the boys when they have tried so hard all season Well Done. Roland's little jig on the sideline was worth the wait as well. No best player this week as all players made an even contribution and it showed. His mother begs to differ but I suspect Jack was practicing during the holidays he was on fire, Eddie obviously faired well with a little R & R as he also played a cracker, great defence work from Nick I, Lachlan and Matt as always, Nick C-P saved the day on many occasions and was not afraid to challenge some of the big hitters, some great leads from Mason and Sean, Jordan opened the game right up on many occasions and Henry as always fought every ball that came his way and of course 2 goals from will speaks for itself. Of course none of this would have been possible without the valient efforts of Jonnno our goalie who survived an onslaught on his own on a couple of occasions. This could have made it a very different result. Thank you!!! Girls 7/8A Reserve vs Modernians No report

Boys 7/8B Black vs Mazenod (Lost 0 - 7) Best: N. Dumas, S. Reynolds, L. Bochenek Mazenod College were just too strong for us on Sat. In the defence Nick, Liam, Sean and Justin worked hard, Lewis had some great saves, but not enough backup. Still trying to often to clear the defence through the centre of the field, against good teams this does not work. Forwards also worked hard for few opportunities well done Adam, Dean, Rowen and Harry. We need to continue working on making leads and giving off short passes. Girls 7/8B Black vs Wolves (Drew 4 - 4) Best: R. Dymond, M. Harwood, E. Wilkinson Goals: M. Harwood (2), R. Dymond, E. Wilkinson The Melville girls did not arrive until half time and then played their best half of hockey for the year. Great passing, hard tackling, desperation and INTENSITY resulted in 3 second half goals. With 30 seconds to go we were ahead 4-3. Some very smart work from Wolves caught us off guard for a second and that was enough to ensure the points were split. Great mental toughness from the entire team when it would have been so easy to capitulate. Kimberley and Maddie grow with each game, Claudia follows coach's instructions to the letter and Rebecca is Miss Consistent. A fantastic Captain's game from Elaura. All in all we showed that we're a very close knit team and we're not going to give in without a big gutsy gut-wrenching fight! so proud ! Snakes are on me. Boys 7/8C vs OGMHC (Drew 2 - 2) Best: C. Cumper, J. Harris, C. McCaw Goals: J. Harris (2) The boys were very excited to play on the Perth Hockey Stadium. A great start to the game with a early goal resulting from great team effort. But, OGMHC kept persisting and they got a goal shortly after. Second half saw much of the same thing, with both sides very evenly matched. We would have loved to have a win on the turf, however we ended up with a draw. Special mention to great goal keeping from Peter this week

  • 19

Boys 5/6A vs Fremantle Best: S. North, C. Reid, N. Page Goals: N. Page This was a hard fought game against a quality opposition. As in previous games, when the boys passed the ball around they looked a far better team and were able to match Fremantle. Careful consideration needs to be given to footwear to avoid slipping and sliding. Girls 5/6A vs NC Raiders (Won 1 - 0) Goals: E. Gebauer Great team game. No individual stand out players as all players performed well. Despite only having 10 players the team performed very well and are starting to combine and play as a unit. All our positional players are very much improved. Defensively we are transferring the ball from side to side of the pitch as well as up and down far more efficiently, effectively and quickly. Despite the fact that the opposition had more players we had multiple scoring opportunities. The Forwards had plenty of practice in trying to score but were frustrated. It is only a matter of time before this practice kicks in. An enormous effort from the entire playing group. Boys 5/6B Black vs Riverside Lions Maroon No report Girls 5/6B Gold vs Riverside Lions (Lost 0 - 9) Best: C. Sader, S. Hamdorf, M. Bedford The girls played their first match on Turf this weekend. The speed of the turf proved to be a little tricky for the girls but they all played with gusto. The other team proved won but the experience was great for all.

Boys 5/6 South Grey vs Melville Maroon (Won 11 - 0) Best: Team Effort Goals: T. Ziegelaar (3), R. Bright (2), S. Cocks (2), M. Tate (2), W. Reynolds, J. Podesta Good passing and strong running by all lead to a good win. The boys also swapped around positional roles completely at half time, and showed good work in unfamiliar roles. Tony really shone in work rate today in an overall well balanced team effort. Boys 5/6 South Maroon vs WASPS (Won 2 - 0) 2010-07-24 Best: H. Branley, J. Floyd, L. Hill Goals: J. Lukan (2) No report Boys 5/6 South Maroon vs Melville Grey (Lost 0 - 11) Although not an early 0800 game I think the boys were still in bed asleep for this weeks game. Basically, we were thrashed by the Melville Grey team. However despite this there were moments where the boys did wake up and give it their all for brief periods. We will definitely try harder this week and listen better to our coach Boys 5/6 South White vs Vic Park Orange (Won 1 - 0) Best: D. Van Lieshout, S. Skepper, M. Kuzich Goals: J. Watson The Melville boys 5/6 white team had a well deserved win, 1-0 against Vic Park. Daan Captained the team and had a great game at Right Half, supporting Henry and Jacob in the forwards, with Jacob scoring the only goal. Isaac and Tim displayed controlled stickwork with Matt Munro and Matt Kuzich chasing and hustling with determination. Ben and Eddie ran hard all game, with Sam, Olie and Tyler dominating in our defense, cutting off many attacking attempts. The boys read the game and executed several set plays to disrupt the opposition.

Girls 5/6 South Maroon vs Vic Park (Lost 1 - 7) Best: M. Hagen, L. Anderson, P. Goerke Goals: L. Anderson This was always going to be a tough physical game for our girls against the Year 6 girls from Vic Park. Prior to the game we had talked about not letting these girls intimidate us and being more assertive in our tackling.... the pep talk must’ve worked because it was a very different team playing them this time. We were still missing two of our defensive players and lost a third who injured herself during the week. Each member of the team was again asked to step into a role they were unaccustomed to and excel they did. The first few minutes of the game saw our girls make an early breakaway and utilise their short passes which caught the Vic Park team off-guard. Going into half time Vic Park were held to only two goals. The second half saw a fired up Vic Park take to the field but our girls never backed away fighting hard to the very end until their legs could go no more. The support and encouragement from the parents was fantastic and I am sure the Rockingham Boys team were also cheering when our girls scored their first goal against Vic Park something we weren’t able to do the last time we played them. Thanks to Emma Shaw for helping us out this week, she offered to help by playing half a game for us but must’ve been having so much fun she decided to play the full game! The girls and I really appreciated your help. Congratulations to Lauren for scoring her first goal – great positioning, Molly who learnt not to take the ball to the opposition and passed early to her team mates, Ellen and Bryanna who held wide on the wings and positioned themselves for the wide passes, Cassandra and Margaret who as Inners ran more than anyone and met the Vic Park girls head on to tackle them and gain possession of the ball (although Cassie only came up to their waist I think!), Kate showed a renewed assertiveness as halfback and was strong in her defence despite a ball hitting her cheek, Poppy did more than any coach could ask by filling two defensive roles - her strong tackling skills and determination to push the ball wide saved many opportunities for Vic Park to score, Ella always a strong fullback controlled the defence and guided the girls who stepped in to assist her, and finally Kya who will make a great goalie as she gets older and more confident. Next week Bruce will be back coaching the girls (I get to sit back and just

manage them) and I know he would have been very proud of them and their newly acquired skills.... so girls make sure you show Bruce what you have learnt in your next game! Girls 5/6 South White vs Willetton Reds (Lost 1 - 2) Best: E. Hutchinson, K. Loffell, A. Ross Goals: G. Clavey We played Willetton Reds this week and had plenty of shots but were not able to catch up on the score line. It was probably not our best performance of the season as we lacked our normal desire for the ball. That said, the passing going forward was good and our first phase tackling was committed and effective. Our inside forwards worked well in the break away attacks. Emily’s tackling and work rate in defense were excellent and Kirsty probably made more saves at goalie than we have seen all season. It was good to see Katherine stepping up to take the short corner hitouts and Amy R had some great plays, especially an auto play in the 25 that had them napping and nearly resulted in a goal. Looking back, it was a game we could easily have won as we had a lot of shots on goal. Our vision and passing have improved so we should be able to dominate if we re-discover that desire for the ball.
