Three Menomonee Falls School Districtteachers were among the 37 in the stateof Wisconsin who were awarded certifica-tion through the National Board forProfessional Teaching Standards.

Riverside Elementary School teacherJeff Pitrof and North Middle Schoolteachers Jess Gieryn and Chris Schraederattained the certification through thenational board.

“Congratulations to our new NationalBoard Certified teachers,” said StateSuperintendent Tony Evers said in astatement issued by the state Department

of Public Instruction (DPI). “It takes atrue commitment to teaching our childrenand to the teaching profession to earnthis credential. I commend these educa-tors for completing this rigorous process.”

According to a news release from theDPI, the process for certification is com-prised of a "written assessment of con-tent knowledge, reflection on studentwork samples, video and analysis of teaching practice, and documentedimpact and accomplishments as a teach-ing professional. The voluntary processcan be completed over one to threeyears."

    Menomonee Falls Superintendent

Patricia Greco said the certification "is athorough reflection on your work.It rep-resents the best of the teaching profes-sion in being able to self-reflect, beingable to improve, being able to say we'renever quite there yet. You really are rolemodels, not just within the system but inthe state and the national.

The three teachers spoke about theprocess during a presentation at the Dec.14 Menomonee Falls School Board meet-ing. Pitrof, a third grade teacher, said hestarted the process of national board cer-tification three years.

"It was without a doubt the best expe-rience I've had for teaching and improv-

ing my teaching," Pitrof said. He said theprocess was "a great way to reflect onlearning, learning how to collaborate withteachers. It was just a great experience."

Gieryn, an eighth grade teacher atNorth, said the experience was "intense."

Gieryn said for her portfolio for theboard certification, they had to followthe progress of two students over a yearand how teaching was changed to meettheir needs. Another portfolio involved avideo tape of a large group discussion, one of which was a school group discus-sion. The fourth portfolio involveddescribing activity that occurred outsidethe classroom.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on yourwebsite and they look amazing! My problem is that Ihave had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt

and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to pleasehelp me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out tochew. Can you fix this dentist’s dentures so I don’t haveto pay for another set! Please help me, as I can’t live thisway.

Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You didnot mention if this was an immediate set of denturesgiven to you the day your other teeth were removed orsimply a replacement for older dentures. There is an artto making dentures and even with tremendous care andskill; denture fabrication is a process that requirespatience. As people live with dentures they experiencecontinued bone loss. There is so much bone loss thatdentures begin to move and may actually slide duringchewing even with using denture adhesives. When teethare removed you actually lose up to 40% of theremaining bone width in the first year after teeth areremoved and you can continue to lose 40-60% of theremaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!

The solution is to save teeth if possible and if notpractical to place mini-implants or traditional implants topreserve the bone.

Implants preserve bone! That means that over timedentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.

I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fittingdentures usually require that they be made again fromscratch. It is just too easy to change someone’s dentureand then feel that the changes that were made could havemade your situation worse! So most dentists will want tostart over with new impressions, brand new teeth andmountings to try and remedy the problems you haveexperienced. Trying to make your dentures fit mayactually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of money, which would be wasted if your dentures couldnot be made to be comfortable.

In rare situations, I will work with someone’s olddentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores orsimply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

set of dentures. I would have to assess your olddentures to make an evaluation of how close they are toideal and the status of your bite and how your teeth fittogether for optimal chewing. Then I could decide if wecan do anything with your current set of teeth.

We would be happy to perform a second opinion orimplant consultation to our readers! Please call us at414-464-9021 to schedule your visit.

successful program. Steve was an integral partof those accomplishments and a tremendousresource of knowledge, not just on the basket-ball court but on life in general," Dalton said.

Stuve noted that Dalton was a fan of UCLAbasketball Coach John Wooden, and Wooden's"pyramid of success" is given to all members of the team at the beginning of the season.Stuve then went over the values of the base of the pyramid in remembrance of Dalton.

On the value of "industriousness," Stuvenoted that Dalton had detailed practice plans"and an unmatched work ethic. He gave every-thing he had to make sure his players were pre-pared for every game."

On the value of friendship," Stuve said

Dalton "was as reliable and kind-hearted afriend as you will ever come across. He wasgenuine in his actions and he cared deeply forothers."

On the value of loyalty, Stuve said Dalton"gave us complete support to the players andfellow coaches. He worked diligently every dayto make the program as good as it could be."

On the value of cooperation, Stuve saidDalton always did what was best for thegreater good of the program. Dalton, Stuvesaid, was adaptable "and had a keen under-standing of the big picture at all times."

On the value of enthusiasm, Stuve saidDalton "truly enjoyed teaching the game of basketball. He enthusiasm for learning was

inspirational to all of us. Even with 30 years of experience he was still eager to learn newthings and do everything he could be the bestat every facet of coaching."

Stuve noted that over the past several yearsDalton underwent treatment for cancer and hisphysical stature lessened, but Stuve said hispassion for the game and his dedication to theprogram was stronger than ever.

"Steve's legacy is embodied by this year'sprogram motto: 'Whatever you do, work at itwith all your heart,'" Stuve said. "Steve exem-plified this in all he did and for that we areprofoundly and eternally grateful."

Stuve then added: "As I look back onSteve's final season last year, I realize he wasnot dying as much as he was showing us all

how to live -- and that's with integrity, sincer-ity, kindness, generosity, with passion andenthusiasm for all you do."

As Stuve spoke, a photo of Dalton was dis-played on screens behind both baselines of thebasketball court.

Gross has been director of businessservices in the School District of Menomonee Falls since the 2007-8school year. He came to the MenomoneeFalls district from the Marshal district, where he served as business manager.

During an interview after the Dec.14 Menomonee Falls School District,Gross noted he resides in the KettleMoraine district and his two childrenattend Kettle Moraine schools.

"It was a really tough decision toleave working with this leadershipteam, this board," Gross said of Menomonee Falls. "Pat Greco as a super-

intendent is the best. It was decision to leave. But from thefamily side of things, it made ssense."

long time -- thinking about standardsand thinking about the way I'm goingto teach them,"Gieryn said. "The kind

of teacher I want to be -- this hashelped me with that."Gieryn thanked the School Board,

Superintendent Patricia Greco andNorth principal Lynn Grimm -- whopreviously attained national certifica-tion when she was teaching --- fortheir support in the process.

"I felt like I could do anything orget anything I needed because it was

really intense and it did cause mestress and anxiety," Gieryn said.

Schraeder, an eighth teacher, saidhe appreciates the board and commu-nity support.

"We wouldn't have been able to dothis without it," Schraeder said.

Menomonee Falls and theNorthland Pines district were the twoschool districts that had three teach-ers earn certification. Gieryn thankedother teachers who previouslyattained national certification fortheir support during the process.
