ITF/CAT Southern Africa 13 & Under Circuit

The ITF/CAT Southern Africa 13 & under Circuit held in Malawi from 12 –

23 June 2006 gathered the best 13 & under players from the region. Thirty-one players -14 boys and 17 girls representing height nations (Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, R.S.A, Zambia and Zimbabwe) participated in the circuit, organised by the Malawi Lawn Tennis Association and the ITF/CAT. The girls played at Blantyre Sports Club and the boys at Country Club Limbe. Sami Sidia, ITF Development Officer for Southern Africa, coordinate and referee the circuit, he was assisted by Mtengula from Malawi. Action got underway with a three-day training camp where both coaches and players got used to the clay and fine-tuned their games ahead of the tournaments. Two of the three tournaments that followed were ITF/CAT 13 & Under tournaments, while the third tournament allowed any players aged 14 & Under to participate as well. Zimbabwean Amanda Nkomba played some great tennis throughout the circuit and won all three tournaments. Her biggest threat was her doubles partner Valerie Bhunu, also from Zimbabwe. On the boys’ side, there were three different winners: Siphiwe Foko of South Africa, Andrew Chililamoto of Malawi and Lame Botshoma of Botswana in the first, second and third events respectively.

ITF/CAT 13 & Under North African Circuit Tunis: 2-12 July 2006.

Egypt and Tunisia dominated the Circuit

Egypt and Tunisia dominated the ITF/CAT North African 13 & under Circuit held at the Tunisian National Tennis Centre in El Menzah. Organised by the Tunisian Tennis Federation and the ITF/CAT, the circuit attracted 35 players – 22 boys and 13 girls – from Algeria, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. Prior to the circuit, a two-day training camp allowed ITF representative Hichem Riani to put the players through several fitness tests and evaluate their tennis through round-robin tiebreak matches in order to seed the first tournament. Egypt won all four trophies at the first four-day tournament, with Ahmed El Bitar winning the boys’ singles and doubles (with Mostofa Abulghar), and Yasmine Ebadah the girls’ singles and doubles (with Rana Sherif). The second tournament demonstrated the potential of the Tunisian players, with Moez Chargui (boys’ singles), Sonia Daggou (girls’ singles) and Fares Kilani and Baligh Ellouze (boys’ doubles) all winning. Egyptians Ebadah and Sherif won the girls doubles title against Tunisian Sonia Daggou and Ons Jabeur. The « Fédération Camerounaise de Tennis » is hosting the ITF/CAT 13 & Under Circuit of West and Central Africa in the Tennis Centre of Douala ; 10 nations from the region are participating in this event with fourty six entered players (25 boys and 21girls) and 11 coaches representing : Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, La Guinea Bissau, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo. This ITF/CAT event is held in KSA Centre of Douala. Mr Pierre Penké is the ITF/CAT Circuit Director, Amine Ben Makhlouf, the ITF Development Officer of West and Central Africa is the ITF Representative, he will conduct the 2 five day training Camps and will supervise the 3 four day Tournaments . President Mr Edouard Eugène Akame Akame, Secretary General Mr Jean Michel Fotso and all members of the “Fédération Camerounaise de Tennis” are doing a great job to provide to Tennis Cameroon its former prestige. 4- Visits To CAT Offices

Mr Ahmed Osman Diallo President of Niger Tennis Federation

visited CAT Offices in Tunis Mr Ahmed Osman Diallo, President of Niger Tennis Federation effectuated a brief visit to CAT Headquarters in Tunis in June 2006. Mr Diallo was received by Mr Tarak Chérif CAT President and Mr Hichem Riani, CAT General Manager. He has also visited several Tennis Centres in Tunisia: National Tennis Centre in El Menzah, Tennis Club of Tunis and Tennis Club of Hammamet. The new CAT Headquarters in Tunis Mr Mourad Helal, President Libyan Arab Tennis Federation has visited the CAT Headquarters in Tunis during his stay at the occasion of the Arab 12 & 14 years Championships held in Tunisia at mid- July. Mr Helal met Mr Tarak Cherif, CAT President and were discussed about many subjects regarding the Feature of the African Tennis and the upcoming programme of the Libyan Tennis Federation Hichem Riani, CAT General Manager has also received in the beginning of July Mr Khaled Zankouli, General Secretary of Libyan Tennis Federation and Mr Abdul Monoom Machina, Vice President and discussed regarding many subjects and especially Development of Tennis in Libya.

5- African Teams Tours

Five ITF Teams 14 & Under in the European Tour Forty-six players from 24 countries will start a five-week European tour as part of five ITF 14 & Under Touring Teams. Five teams, accompanied by a total of 11 coaches, were selected based on their performance at regional qualifying competitions throughout the year. The African Team formed by 6 players and 2 coaches: Boys : Sami Ghorbel (TUN) – Anas Amallah(MOR)- Seif El Sherbini(EGY) Girls: Nour Abbes(TUN) – Mora Eshak(EGY) – Christi Potgieter(RSA) Coaches : Hani Nasser (EGY) & Rosemary Owino(KEN) The tour consists of five weeks of category 1 and 2 European tournaments as listed below 6-10 July : Training Camp in Paris 10-15 July: BNP Paribas Cup at Stade Français in Paris. 17-22 July: Windmill Cup Carl Gantois in Holland. 24-29 July: The 13/14 des Hauts de Seine in France. 31 July – 5 August: 29e Rheinenergie Cup in Germany.. 7-12 August: Lapperre Young Champions Cup at Hasselt in Belgium. Hrvoje Zmajic, ITF/Tennis Europe Development Officer, who always attends the training camp, commented, “The European 14 & Under Tour has become an integral part of the players’ development. With the best 14 & Under players from so many different countries taking part, the tour provides an excellent chance to assess the quality and game style of the next generation”.

Success for the International 16 & Under Touring Teams in Europe 2006

Distinction of the African Players Three touring teams representing the ITF, COSAT and Tennis Europe took part in a five-week tour of 16 & under tournaments in Italy and France, which came to an end in Paris last weekend. These players are some of the best in their age categories and were selected so that they could benefit from playing higher-level tournaments outside their regions. Prior to the first tournament the team participated in a training camp at the ‘Forza e Constanza’ Tennis Centre, in Brescia where players benefited from the wide range of facilities available. The camp served to provide ITF Team Coaches – Frank Zlesak (CZE), Clément Ngoran (CIV) and Elizma Nortje (NAM) – with an opportunity to observe the players and coach them on various technical aspects of their game. It also gave the players the chance to get used to European clay courts. This European tour began the 31 May and continued until 8 July as follow: 31 May – 5 June: Training Camp in Italy. 5-10 June : Tournament of « Avvenire » in Milan 12 – 17 June :Memoral Nico Crotti Crema Italy. 19-25 June: Derby Cadet La Baule France. 26 June-2 July : Le Pont des Générations France. 3-8 July: Paris Cadets France. As follow, the African nomination’s team selected in departure to participate in that circuit: Mohammed Safwat (EGY), Tarak Essawy (EGY) Menna Nagdy(EGY), Nadia Lalami (MOR), Hendrik Coertzen (RSA) and Ducan Mugabe(UGA) The distinction provided from Egyptian Mohammed Safwat who won the Boys single event in « Pont des Génération » tournament held in France and was the Runner up in single of the « Nico Crotti » tournament in Italy. In the doubles, ITF Team compatriot Tarek El Esawy joined forces with Vladimir Kruk (BLR) of the Tennis Europe team to take on two Argentinians, Valentir Florez and Kevin Konfederak. Africans Aldrin Ndinya(Kenya) and Anis Bouchlaka (Tunisie) have conducted an ITF Team with 6 players including 2 Africans in the North African 18 & Under Circuit from 29 May to 8 July with the following programme: 29 May – 3 June: Training camp in Rabat – Morocco. 5-10 June : Riad 21, Rabat- Morocco (Grade 3) 12 – 17 June : Raquette d’Or Mohammedia – Morocco (Grade 2) 19 – 25 June: Méditerranée Avenir, Casablanca – Morocco (Grade 2). 28 June – 2 July : Tournoi International de la ville de Tunis - Tunisia (Grade 3) 3 – 8 july : 6th Carthago Cup – Tunisia Le African doubles Team: Ramiaramanana (MAD) / Mensah (GHA) won one Tournament and was Runner up in 3 others,whereas Lofo Ramiaramanana from Madagascar won the Single Tournament of Mohammedia. Lofo was recently selected by the ITF to participate in the North American Circuit programmed for next August/September.

9- Coaches Courses

ITF / OS Level I Coaches Course - Swaziland A Level 1 Coaches’ Course was held in Mbabane, Swaziland from 26th June - 4th July 2006. There were 20 participants on the course including 2 from Mozambique and over the nine days, candidates learnt about mini-tennis, play tennis, technique, tactics, and mental and physical aspect for coaches working with beginner and intermediate players. The course was conducted by Karl Davies ITF Development Officer of the Southern Region at the University of Swaziland which provided the perfect venue considering the traditional learning environment at hand. Many thanks must go to the ITF, Olympic Solidarity and to the Swaziland National Tennis Union for the excellent organization of this course, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved.

ITF Level I Coaches Course Dar Es Salaam – Tanzanie

An ITF Level I Coaches Course was held in Dar Es Salaam – Tanzania from 3 to 11 July under the tutorship of Prince Madema, ITF Development Officer of East Africa. 14 candidates attented the Course including 13 fromTanzania et 1 from Uganda in the Gymkhana Club of Dar Es Salaam. Hassan Khasim John (TAN), Muwereza Vincent Nasser (UGA), Nicholas Jonas Leringa (TAN) et Kevin Lipingu (TAN) were good during this course and obtained the Level I Coach Certificates. Ramdhani Jerani Sobo (TAN) and Waziri Rajabu Mohamed (TAN) have to retake the written exam.

ITF Level I Coach Course Tripoli – Libya

The ITF Level I Coach Course planned to be held in Tripoli – Libya from 22 to 30 June 2006 is postponed to another date, due to the Arm’s injury of Khaled Zankouli to whom we wish a fast rehabilitation. The Course will be conducted by Khaled Zankouli and Hichem Riani

ITF / OS Level II Coaches Course Khartoum – Soudan

Prince Madema, ITF Development Officer of East Africa and Vjeran Friscic (Croatia) are conducting an ITF / OS Coaches Course in Khartoum from 24 July to 5 August with the participation of 15 Candidates from the East African region. The Sudan Lawn Tennis Association is doing very well to ensure a great success to the Course.
