QUiCK FaCTSTigers vs. UTEP

This is the ninth meeting between Memphis and UTEP. The Miners lead the overall series, 6-2, in-cluding two straight wins in the series. UTEP won the last meeting the two teams played in Memphis 60-55, then came back from a double digit halftime deficit to win 66-60 last season in a game played in El Paso. The Sunday game will be big in determining who has a shot at fourth place in the C-USA standings. UTEP is currently fourth at 7-5 in league play, holding on to the final first round bye for the C-USA Championships with four regular season games remaining. Memphis is a game behind at 6-6, but a win over UTEP would pull the two teams into a tie break, and the winner of the game will have the deciding game in a head-to-head match up since the two teams face one another just once each season.

With the Win At Southern Miss - Memphis jumped from ninth to a tie for fifth in the C-USA standings. The Tigers are currently tied for fifth with UAB and Tulsa. Memphis owns the series tie break with UAB with the series sweep over the Blazers. Neither team has faced Tulsa yet. Memphis plays at Tulsa on Thursday and UAB hosts Tulsa on the following Sunday. Memphis plays two of its final four games of the regular season at home, but still has to go play at East Carolina, who is currently tied for second in the league standings. - Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line for a second straight game. She has now hit 25 consecutive free-throws, eying her own school record of 26 that she shares with former Tiger Devin Necaise. - Memphis had two players finish with 20 or more points for just the second time this season. The first was the first game of the year when Nicole Dickson and freshman guard Mooriah Rowser each scored 20 points in the season opener against Grambling State. Dickson was involved in this 20-plus point twosome again on Thursday night, only this time, with freshman guard Ariel Hearn. Both Dick-son and Hearn scored 22 points in the overtime win at Southern Miss. - Memphis swept a second C-USA East Division sweep with the overtime win at Southern Miss. Memphis has swept East Division foes UAB and Southern Miss and was swept by UCF. Memphis leads the series with ECU 1-0 with a road contest on the slate at Greenville, and trails 0-1 in the series with Marshall. The Thundering Herd will be Memphis’ final regular season home opponent on Mar. 7th. - Memphis, who had been out-rebounded in four straight games, out-rebounded USM by 25 in the win. The Tigers finished with 24 offensive rebounds, sticking them back for 23 second chance points. - The Tigers, who had gone two straight games without a three-point field goal made, converted six in the win at USM, including one in overtime from Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir that gave the Tigers their first lead in overtime. Ariel Hearn finished with a career-best three triples in the win. - Nicole Dickson, who already ranks seventh in career rebounding at Memphis with 751 boards, posted a season-high 16 rebounds in the win at Southern Miss. Point guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir add-ed a career-high seven rebounds, helping get the Tigers out in transition off the defensive board. - With her 22 point game, Nicole Dickson went over the 500-point mark for the season. She be-comes the first Tiger to score 500 or more points in a single season since Jasmine Lee finished with 501 points last season. Since Melissa McFerrin has taken over at Memphis, just three Tigers have scored 500 or points in a single season: Brittany Carter scored 654 from 2009-10; Dickson’s 504 points this year, and Lee’s 501 points last season.

Hearn Ties Another Dickson Freshman Mark Ariel Hearn has been reworking some of the freshman marks Nicole Dickson set in her freshman year, a season in which Dickson was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team. Hearn had already passed Dickson’s scoring mark from her freshman season, and with the 40 minutes she played on Thursday night, tied Dickson for fourth all-time in the freshman record book for minutes played. Hearn has played 832 minutes already this season with four regular season and at least one confer-ence tournament game remaining. She is just 166 minutes shy of playing more minutes in a season than any freshman in school history. The current freshman single season minutes played mark is held by Ramses Lonlack, who was the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year last year and was a three-time All-C-USA Defensive team honoree. Lonlack graduated with the career record for minutes and games played last season.

Hope Goes For Double-Digits Junior center Pa’Sonna Hope came off the bench and gave Memphis some big minutes in the post. She played 21 minutes and was 5-for-7 from the field, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds in the win. The 11 points was the most for Hope since scoring double-digit points in three straight games in November and December (11/25, 11/30, 12/7). She posted a career-best 14 points in the loss to Sun Belt West Division-leading UALR back on Dec. 7th. The 21 minutes played was the most for Hope since the loss at Tulane back in Memphis’ fourth C-USA game of the season. The seven re-bounds is the most for the Ole Miss transfer since eight in the first meeting with Southern Miss.

Abdul-Qaadir Shoots Her Way Through Rough Night Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir’s shooting numbers from the win at Southern Miss weren’t what she wanted (she shot 25 percent from the field -- 3-for-12), but Abdul-Qaadir was 2-for-3, including a 1-for-1 mark from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line to help Memphis out-score USM 14-8 in the extra five minute period. Abdul-Qaadir scored seven of her 10 points in overtime. She has scored double-digit points in three straight games, tying her longest consecutive double-digit point games mark of the season. Abdul-Qaadir is just 18 points shy of the 600 point scoring plateau and is four assists shy of her 200th career assist.

Ajanaku Stepping Up on the Glass In her post-game radio show, Melissa McFerrin said Jamila Ajanaku had come to her and said she had decided that she was going to make rebounding a bigger part of her role on the team. The se-nior, who transferred from Middle Tennessee this summer, where she played her first three collegiate seasons, is averaging 3.4 rebounds per game on the season, but is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game over the last four games.

Hearn Passes Another Fellow Memphian’s Mark

Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... rECorD BrEaKDoWn Freshman guard Ariel Hearn finished with 22 points, all but two of those in the second half and overtime periods, in the win at Southern Miss. That was her first 20-plus point outing in C-USA play, but was her third 20-plus point game of the season. She finished just one point shy of tying her career high of 23 points, set in the win over Tennessee Tech, and tied her 22 point mark set in the road win at Seton Hall. With the 22 points, Hearn now has 354 points for her career, ranking sixth all-time among Tiger freshmen. She passed former Tiger Paris Leonard’s mark (2005-06) of 354 points. Leonard, like Hearn, was a Memphis prep product. Leonard graduated from Wooddale HS, while Hearn graduated from Arlington HS. Hearn now ranks tied for fourth among Tiger freshmen in minutes played (832), third in free-throws made (90), third in free-throw attempts (128), fourth in assists (95) and sixth in points (354).

Another Big Outing From Jones After scoring eight points in eight minutes in the win over UAB, sophomore center Ann Jones finished with 10 points in 14 minutes in the loss to SMU. That was the Jackson, Tenn., native’s first double-digit scoring night since as 12 point effort in the loss to Prairie View A&M (Nov. 25th) and is her third double-digit scoring effort of the season. Jones’ work is also paying off at the free-throw line, where she has hit nine straight free-throws, including back-to-back games with a 4-for-4 performance from the stripe. The Tigers just need to keep the 6-3 Jones out of foul trouble. She had four fouls in 14 minutes on Sunday and had three in eight minutes in the win over UAB on Thursday night. With the ball in her hands, she is a scoring threat, going 5-for-6 from the floor over the last two games. Jones missed the game at Southern Miss due to a family illness. She is just five points shy of her 200th career point at Memphis coming in to Sunday’s match-up against UTEP.

Dickson Moves to 10th in Career Scoring Nicole Dickson has moved into the career top 10 at Memphis in scoring with 1,568 career points. That puts her squarely at 10th all-time, but she would have some work to do to move up any higher though. Kitty Allen is in ninth place with 1,823 points, 255 points away from where Dickson now sits.

Dickson Just Misses Third Consecutive Double-Double The Tiger coaching staff asked the team to focus on rebounding in the game against Southern Miss, and senior co-captain Nicole Dickson led the way, posting a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds. That was Dickson’s sixth double-digit rebounding effort of the season an her sixth double-double this year. She now has 16 career double-doubles, ninth in school history, and needs one more to move to a tie for sixth in double-doubles, where Ashley Thornton, Diane Gary and Linda Street currently sit with 17 double-doubles.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.

McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.

Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-

sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
