UNC GREENSBORONOTESThe Spartans enter this weekend’s tournament with a 4-7 record, having dropped two of three matches in UCF’s tournament. UNCG won a 3-2 victory over Fla. Atlantic before being swept by Pittsburgh and USF. The Spartans’ offense is led by Ariel Newman and Karrian Chambers who have 105 and 116 kills, respectively. Ari Lysacek is UNCG’s setter and has totaled 220 assists in 11 matches. Kellie Orewiler has anchored the Spartan defense with 179 digs so far this season.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Sept. 24, 2005)GREENSBORO, NC - Memphis was able to hold off a strong UNC-Greensboro surge to win 3-1 (30-17, 30-13, 28-30, 30-24) and take home the UNCG Invita-tional Tournament title. The Tigers improve to 15-4 with their eight consecutive win and second straight tournament championship. Senior setter Heather Watts re-ceived the Tournament’s MVP honors, while fellow senior outside hitter Tiara Gilkey garnered all-tournament accolades.

Memphis dominated play in both of the first two games, holding the Spartans to 17 and 13 points, respectively. UNCG hit just .120 in the first game and an even lower -.120 in game two.

The Tigers jumped on the Spartans early, putting up a 4-0 run to go ahead 14-10 halfway through the game. Three service aces by Christen Clayton highlighted a 7-0 surge by the Tigers that gave them a 10 point lead. Memphis ended the game by scoring 14 of the final 18 points for a 30-17 win. The U of M hit .500 in the first frame.

Game two was much like the first as the Tigers finished the game on a 19-5 run. A 7-0 run pushed Memphis to a 19-7 advantage, before a 10-3 outburst closed the contest out at 30-13.

UNCG would not be swept at home, however, as they battled to a win in game three. The Spartans rebounded to hit .436 in the tilt. The game saw 12 ties, with the last, coming at 26-2 before UNCG’s momentum carried them to victory.

Memphis’ strength came through in the fourth game as they battled the UNCG mo-mentum that powered them to an early 11-7 lead. Memphis erased that four point advantage with a 5-0 run that was capped by a Shelby Burton kill. Memphis led until the Spartans made a 6-2 run to knot the game at 23. Memphis then got a pair of kills from Nancy Nellans and Watts added another to close the match out with a 30-24 win of the fourth game.

RADFORD2011 NOTESThe Highlanders enter the Spartan Spiketacular with a 3-6 record, having dropped their last two games at the Miami/Best Western Tournament last weekend. Radford holds wins over USC Upstate (3-2), Chicago State (3-0), and Alabama A&M (3-2) and has dropped matches to Hofstra (2-3), Manhatten (2-3), UMKC (2-3), Miami Ohio (1-3) and Florida Gulf Coast (1-3).

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Sept. 5, 2003)DAVIDSON, N.C. - The University of Memphis volleyball team used a series of runs and some timely offensive outbursts to down Radford, 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-20) in the first match of the Davidson Wildcat Volleyball Invitational, Friday.

Game one was tightly contested as Radford shot out to a 3-1 lead before Memphis battled back to take its first lead of the game at 6-5 off a Watts putdown from a pass from freshman Christen Clayton (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake). The two teams struggled with their respective serves during the match, with Radford recording five service errors in game one, compared to three from the Tigers.

Memphis seemed to have game one under control before stalling at 29 points while Radford used a 4-1 run to pull back to 29-25 before freshman Melissa Nance (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) downed one of her nine kills to give Memphis game one, 30-25.

Game two again found the Tigers down early, as Radford was up 5-4 before a Gilkey kill tied the game at five. A series of ties would follow, as the Highlanders took advantage of Memphis service and attack errors before one of Neba’s 12 kills gave the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. Memphis used a 4-2 run to pull away from Radford to get to 16-12. Radford pulled back to 16-15 before an 11-1 Memphis run put the Tigers up 27-19. Radford used a 5-1 run of their own to pull back to 28-23 before a Neba kill sealed game two, 30-24.

It appeared that the Highlanders were ready to be done with the match in game three, trail-ing by as many as 10 at 15-5 before embarking on a series of runs that pulled them to 20-15 on a Gilkey attack error. A Watts’ kill put Memphis up 23-16, before Radford freshman setter Danielle Rynd (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) answered back with a dump of her own to keep Radford within reach at 23-17. But Memphis answered with a Watts kill and service ace and a Neba block solo to go up 29-19. A Radford service error sealed the match, 30-19. Rynd finished with 24 assists, while Divona Cox finished with a team-leading nine kills in a loss that dropped Radford to 0-4 on the season.

Katie Meyer ranks second in hitting percentage, as the sophomore has been attacking at a .420 clip so far this season. Junior outside hitter Altrese Hawkins also comes in second on the C-USA kills list with 152 in 2011. Hawkins’ 27 kills in a 3-1 loss to Columbia are the second most in a single match so far this season.

Week in Review (Sept. 5-11)The Tigers traveled to Carbondale, Ill. and dominated the 2011 Saluki Invitational. Memphis swept its opponents in all three matches on its way to its second tournament title of the 2011 preseason. The Tigers were led by all-tournament performers Hajnalka Molnar and Marija Jovanovic. Jovanovic, who turned in a double-double performance of 14 kills and 14 digs in the championship-clinching match against Southern Illinois, was tabbed as the tournament’s MVP. She has now been selected to the all-tournament team in each of the Tigers’ three preseason tournaments. It was the first all-tournament selec-tion of the 2011 season for Molnar.

Preseason PowerThe Tigers are now 8-2 this preseason and have claimed tournament titles at the Memphis Invitational and SIU Saluki Invitational. With one tournament remaining, the Tigers have equaled the amount of tournament titles from the 2010 season.

All-Tournament PerformanceMarija Jovanovic was named to the USF Asics/Powerade All-Tournament team after turn-ing in a double-double of 20 kills and 10 digs in the Tigers’ five-set loss to San Francisco in the event’s championship match. From Serbia with LoveThe 2011 Tigers, much like the 2010 team, will have a very European feel. The roster features five players from Serbia (Jovana Barisic, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, Aleksandra Petronijevic) and one from Hungary (Hajnalka Molnar). Assistant coach Marko Majstorovic is also from Serbia. Five of the six players had a major impact in Memphis’ first tournament weekend.

• Jelic recorded 40 digs and 32 kills during the Memphis Invitational, including a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs in the championship match against Georgia State.

• Jovanovic was named a member of the Memphis Invitational all-tournament team after downing 55 (3.67 k/s) kills and coming up with 31 digs. She held a .300 hitting per-centage and posted a double-double of 15 kills and 16 digs in the championship match against Georgia State. Jovanovic was named to the USF Asics/Powerade All-Tournament team after turning in a double-double of 20 kills and 10 digs in the Tigers’ five-set loss to to San Francisco in the event’s championship match. She continued her strong play at the Saluki Invitational, totaling 35 kills, including a double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs against Southern Illinos, en route to being named tournament MVP.

• Petronijevic posted 75 total digs during the Memphis Invitational, including a career-high 29 in the championship match against Georgia State. The 29 digs in a single match ties Christine Bach and Christen Clayton for ninth all-time. Petronijevic was also named to the all-tournament team.

• Molnar was named C-USA’s Setter of the Week after a solid performance throughout the Memphis Invitational. The redshirt junior recorded 199 total assists, including 61 in the championship match against Georgia State to lead the Tigers to four-straight victories. Molnar picked up more accolades at the Saluki Invitational, as the setter was named to the all-tournament team after leading Memphis to three-straight 3-0 victories over Green Bay, Murray State and Southern Illinois.

• Kostic posted nine kills and 35 digs while seeing time in 13 sets throughout the Memphis Invitational. She also recorded eight service aces.

2010 in ReviewCoach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-conference mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational preseason tourna-ments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postseason awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sopho-more season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 cam-paign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29.

800-win MilestoneThe University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, collected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers currently rank 28th on the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list, just four victories behind George Washington.

Fab 50After starting 2011 with an 8-2 record, head coach April Jauregui is just two victories away from reaching the 50 win plateau.

Memphis, 3-0 Tigers Victorious in Straight Sets over Green Bay

Carbondale, Ill. - The University of Memphis volleyball team opened the 2011 Saluki Invitational with a 3-0 victory (25-22; 27-25; 25-22) over Wisconsin-Green Bay at SIU Arena. Altrese Hawkins registered 12 kills while Katie Meyer tied a career-high with 10 to lead the Tigers, who improve to 6-2 on the season.

Green Bay took the first two points of the first set before Memphis responded with eight-straight points to take a commanding 8-2 advantage. The Tigers extended that lead to 16-10 behind strong play from Vesna Jelic and Altrese Hawkins, but Green Bay responded with a run of its own and took the lead 21-20. Memphis came back with kills from Maja Kostic, Marija Jovanovic and Jelic to regain the lead 23-21. The Phoenix sided out to make it 23-22, but the Tigers responded with two-straight kills to clinch the set, 25-22.

Set two proved to be a battle for both teams as it needed extra points to deter-mine a winner. Green Bay took a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes behind four consecutive attack errors by Memphis. The Tigers closed the gap to 12-11 before Green Bay responded and extended its advantage to 18-14 and then to 20-16.

Trailing 22-21, Jelic came up with a huge effort play as she sprinted several feet out of taped area to keep the ball in play, and Molnar sent the ball over the net for a kill to tie the game at 22. Memphis then staved off a set point at 25-24 and scored three-straight points to take the set 27-25.

The Tigers appeared in command of the third set, going up by three or more points five different times, including leading 20-16. Green Bay refused to quit, however, and the Phoenix scored five-straight points to take a 21-20 advantage. A service error from the Phoenix tied the game at 21 before a powerful kill from the outside by A. Hawkins put Memphis back in front for good, 22-21.

Cassidy Hawkins, who was a solid performer in relief, then registered a kill down the middle for a 23-21 lead. Altrese Hawkins teamed with Cassidy Hawkins on the next point for a block assist, giving Memphis a match point, 24-21. A. Hawkins then finished off the match with another strong kill from the outside as Memphis took the set 25-22, and the match, 3-0.

Memphis Sweeps Murray State in Saluki Invitational

Carbondale, Ill. - The University of Memphis volleyball team picked up its second-straight win in the Saluki Invitational, using a powerful offensive attack to sweep Murray State, 3-0 (27-25; 25-15; 25-12). Altrese Hawkins and Marija Jovanovic led the Tigers, who improve to 7-2, with 14 kills apiece, while Hajnalka Molnar turned in 41 assists.

Memphis and Murray State traded points in the beginning of the first set, but the Tigers used kills from Jovanovic and Hawkins to build a 14-10 lead. The Racers then battled back and tied the set at 16, forcing Memphis to take a timeout. The Tigers responded with three-straight points to regain a 19-16 advantage. Murray State refused to go down, however, and battle back to notch the set at 22.

The Tigers appeared poised to capture the set with a set point at 24-22, but the Racers scored three-straight points to have a set point of their own at 25-24. Hawkins came through in the clutch, however, and downed a kill to even the score at 25. Another Tiger kill coupled with an error from Murray State sealed the set for Memphis, 27-25.

Memphis jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set behind strong play from Hawkins and Jovanovic. The Racers made it 8-6, but Memphis responded and pushed the lead to 13-9 before a 10-1 run by the Tigers made it 19-11. Molnar led the run with two service aces, and the Tigers would extend the advantage to 23-15 before putting the set away 25-15.

Jovanovic paced a Memphis offensive onslaught which dominated the third set, netting four kills of her own as the Tigers would go on to hit .524 in the set. The Tigers took the lead 1-0 on a kill from Molnar and never looked back. The Racers kept it close and trailed by just three when a service error from Jovanovic made it 9-6.

The Tigers then went on an 11-1 run paced by three service aces from Molnar to extend the lead to 21-9. Murray State sided out and scored to make it 22-11, but two attack errors by the Racers and a kill from Maja Kostic sealed the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0 for the Tigers.

Tigers Power Past Southern Illinois to Claim Saluki Invitational Tournament Title

Carbondale, Ill. - Marija Jovanovic recorded her third double-double of the sea-son and was named tournament MVP as the Tigers (8-2) knocked off Southern Illinois in straight sets (25-23;25-14;25-19) to claim its second tournament title of the preseason at the 2011 Saluki Invitational.

SIU took control of the first set early, going up 3-0 behind two kills from Laura Thole. Memphis battled back to tie the set at four with a kill from Altrese Hawkins and three errors from the Salukis. SIU then regained the lead and extended its advantage to 18-16 before the Tigers battled back to tie the set at 23 behind kills from Jovanovic and Hawkins. The Tigers took their first lead of the set at 24-23 behind another kill from Hawkins and sealed the set 25-23 when the Salukis were whistled for being in the net on the set point.

Memphis carried the momentum from its rally late in the first set into the second set and jumped out to a 4-1 lead, which forced SIU to call a timeout. That didn’t stop the Tigers, however, as they pushed forward and extended their lead to 10-3 behind three service aces from Hawkins.

SIU closed the gap to as few as four when back-to-back attack errors by Memphis made it 15-11. The Tigers responded with a 5-1 run behind two kills from Jovanovic and went on to take the set 25-14.

The Salukis and Tigers battled and traded points for the early part of the set and found themselves tied at 13. Two kills from Jovanovic and a bad set call on SIU allowed the Tigers to take a 16-13 advantage, and they never looked back.

With Jovanovic serving, Memphis went up 21-14 before SIU fought back to make it 22-16. Katie Meyer then recorded her first kill of the third to make it 23-16 and then back-to-back kills from Hawkins and Jovanovic sealed the set, match and tournament for the Tigers.

A. Hawkins led the Tigers with 15 kills in the match, while Jovanovic recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs en route to being named the Saluki Invitational MVP. Hajnalka Molnar also recorded a double-double of 37 assists and 10 digs and was selected to the all-tournament team. Jovanovic has now been selected to the all-tournament team in each of the Tigers’ three preseason tour-naments.
