Here are some examples: Saying ‘15 cans of beans’ helps me to remember that 15 is quinze. Saying ‘Five boats sank’ helps me to remember that 5 is cinq. Singing ‘Frère Jacques’ helps me to remember that frère means ‘brother’. Another way to remember the meaning of words is by linking the word to another word in your mind: e.g. hiver is ‘winter’, because animals hibernate. printemps is ‘spring’: put s in front of it, and you get Sprin-temps. ‘Look, say, cover, write, check’ is a very useful strategy for learning to spell new words. You can help yourself remember the gender of words by e.g. noting masculine nouns in blue and feminine ones in red, or highlighting them in different colours when you note them down.
