Memories of the Third Annual MILL WRITE - NOTES FROM A SMALL PLACEis a movie proudly presented

by Elaine Thompson highlighting a literary event at THE GREENWOOD LODGE, located in Fords Mills, NB.

In partnership with THE WRITERS FEDERATION OF NB and in support of LAUBACH LITERACY NB this

noteworthy event was held on April 9, 2011 and I was happy to be there with my camera!

Books were on display and guests had a chance to win the door prize. There was a special wine table set

up and everyone enjoyed listening to authors sharing their Notes From A Small Place. Writing paper,

event programs and LAUBACH LITERACY information was available on every table! Candles flickered on

the old piano, soft yellow globes of light bounced off the stage and the warmth of the new fireplace

helped create a cozy atmosphere as everyone arrived and Roy Gould, Master of Ceremonies, introduced

his son, Nic Gould, who entertained the crowd throughout the delicious Roast Beef Dinner.

Nic Gouldhas a uniquely haunting voice, soft and melodic at times with an edgy passion that clutches

your heart and makes you want to listen closely to the words. He sang a variety ofcurrent alternative

style tunes covering artists such as Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, Dallas Green and Coldplay. Roy Gould,

also an accomplished musician, described Nics musical selections as melodic, uplifting, emotionally

evocative and sensitive. During the intermission Phillip Albert played some instrumental piano pieces.

Jason Lawson of Main River, NB, was the first Guest Speaker and soon had everyone howling with

laughter as memories very familiar to his hometown triple culture community came bursting through in

his so-called Rants. They didnt knowI could speak French too is sure to perk the ears of anyone whos

been to Kent County as the phrase instantly conjures up images of hilarity! Jasons Blog at Word Press

has been growing in popularity with Facebook friends eagerly awaiting the link to his story of the day.

He has books in the works and writes for various publications including CBC Radio Moncton. At his

online blog, Telling It Like It Is, Jason Uncensored he frequently adds a humorous spin to the world of

power and politics and the tall tales told at the Greenwood were no exception.

Guest Speaker, Carla Gunn of Miramichi and Fredericton read an excerpt from her first novel

Amphibian the story of Phineas; a child who has interesting ways of asking serious questions about

topics such as how best to care for dolphins and protect the natural environment. Carla revealed that

when she told the story to her family they commented the child was exactly the same as she was at

that age, which came as a surprise to her! The book has been short listed for prestigious awards and

recognitions in literary circles and is also being adapted for a play. You can read more of Phins

David Weale of PEI is currently editor of Red magazine. His talk was on coincidence, or more

specifically, synchronicity. He told one story of how on returning home from his first year university he

met another young man from Toronto on the bus. Later, when he and another friend decided to

hitchhike to Seattle they had to take a bus through Toronto. He managed to find a seat by a young girl

and, thinking he ``had a chance`` started chatting. She asked if he knew anyone in Toronto and,

remembering the small piece of paper with the name of the one person he met from there, said yes.

Upon producing it, he told her the name. This person was her boyfriend! :)Visit his Website!

Peter Sawyer has volunteered with Laubach Literacy New Brunswick for over 27 years and was

instrumental in establishing the national organization, Laubach Literacy Canada. He is a Founding

President of Laubach Literacy NB and currently President of the Moncton Regional Learning Council.

Reading from Breaking the Word Barrier, Stories of Adults Learning to Read and the introduction

section which was written by Hermngilde Chiasson, Former Lieutenant-Governor, he states: Every

word learned is a victory. The audience agreed and $80 was given in donations for Laubach Literacy NB.
