A word from the NEWS EDITOR

Hey Mustangs!

A Reminder About Us: We are Memorial's local chapter of Key Club International, a 100% student-run volunteer organization dedicated to providing service and building character. I know many of you haven’t heard a lot from us during this school year, but that’s all about to change.

Here we are in May. The school year is about to come to an end but not before APs and finals, so study hard! This month, we will not only see the birds sing and the flowers bloom, but our community will also continue to grow. By becoming a member of our Key Club, you have already committed yourself to a lifestyle of service and virtue. To some, beginning this new lifestyle may come as a challenge, so for this upcoming year, our team hopes to guide you through your journey in high school as your warm, loving family. We are eager to see every one of you grow.

Meet Our New Lieutenant Governor

Hey Guys,

As some of you guys may know, my name is Brian Kim and I am proud to announce that I will have the opportunity to serve you guys this upcoming school year. Aside from all this key club stuff, I want to take the time to really introduce myself so that we can develop a great relationship. First off, I’m currently a junior at Memorial High School, and I have a never-ending amount of passion for our school. I am also a hardcore sports fan who loves the Rockets, Celtics, Texans, and basically any sports UT and Korea competes in (excited for Korea to bring home some nice, gold metals!!). But more importantly, I’m fun! And I love people, so DON’T BE AFRAID TO TALK TO ME! I want to strive to get to know every one of you:)

Hello,As the new president, I am met with the new challenges and obstacles

of running a club in high school. I've never been president of such a well known and established club such as Key Club, but although we are known to be the "baby" in our division due to our more recent establishment a couple years ago, I am very much looking forward to leading our growing club here at Memorial High. And with the support of my fellow officers and members, I know that we can make it as great as it is meant to be.

Hey fellow Key Clubbers,In case you do not know me, my name is Jihwan Park. I wanted to take

this time to thank you guys so much for electing me as your vice president and I cannot express how grateful I am to be given this opportunity. Key Club this year has overall been great, and had I not joined this club, I would probably not have known you guys as well as I do now. This club have an immense potential that has yet to be discovered, and I hope that in the following year we can work together to make our club better, for me, for you, and for the community in which we serve.

Jihwan Park Vice President

Hey guys, I'm Erin and I'm so excited to be your secretary for the 2016-2017

school year. I love Key Club, mostly because it's a national organization where so many schools come together and work for the greater good. I have many plans for this year, including expanding our events as well as the club membership, so invite as many friends as you can because together, we can build a stronger community:)

Andy Hwang Assistant Secretary

Hey Key Club!I joined hoping to find more opportunities to serve my community. but

Hey y'all!!! I was wondering if y'all would be down for a beach retreat this summer at June 17-18 in Galveston. I was thinking if we can do a beach clean up as our divisional project for a day and have a DCM later on the day. It'll be really fun and it'll also be a chance for our division to get to know one another so we can be more of a community going into the

school year. Thanks guys!

Note from the President So basically the new officers got put into their positions at the end of this month. As the new president, I’m currently trying to learn the ropes of the role and the things I need to do. It’s pretty hectic in May because of all the AP’s which don’t help with the lack of events and opportunities for volunteering. Also because not a lot of people want to really volunteer at this time of year and because of the chaos of testing season, we aren’t able to get much done. Our team is currently trying to set up another meeting before the end this month so we can finish the year on a good note. And with the new executive board, we will be planning new ideas for events and ways to make better Key Club at MHS so don’t give up on key club just yet!

DCON was an amazing experience. This convention gave me the opportunity to meet new people from other schools that have different ways for running Key Club. It was really fun because we had a choice to go to which meeting we wanted to attend, and there were fun tournaments such as game tourneys and talent shows. There were formal dinners that required everyone to wear suits as well, which was very new to me. After attending the district convention, I had a better understanding of how Key Club expanded throughout the world. This experience not only enhanced my knowledge of this organization, but it also gave me some ideas of how to improve our Key Club at Memorial High School. I really encourage many people to join next year because I want others to feel motivated and energized when they get back home as well. Some students from our school aren’t aware of how great Key Club is because of the few volunteering opportunities we got in the past. But during this trip, many people taught me that Key Club isn’t just another club that gives student access to more volunteering hours so we could put them on our college resumes, it is also a place where we can expand our leadership skills and grow together as people. It was truly wonderful to see so many students striving towards the same goal: to expand Key Club.

- Andy Hwang

In the beginning, I thought DCON stood for Dallas Convention and it sounded boring so all I was looking forward to was the chance to skip school. However, over time I became passionate for both the organization and its members! The event consisted of members from both Oklahoma and Texas. The event was informal and members were not required to attend except for dinner and lunch. This ensured that every member was able to fully experience the event! My favorite moment from DCON was riding the elevators. Every time we got on, there would always be new people and we would in a way be forced to talk to them. Because of this exercise, I met and made a very good friend named Joseph! We were able to bond in that short amount of time from the second floor all the way to the eighth!! We also turnt up at the governors ball; I would even go as far as to say that it was better than any of the school dances! I would definitely recommend other students to attend DCON. Who knows, maybe you’ll be like me and meet someone great like Joseph.
