Hearing from our staff with accolades like the Readers’ Choice Awards make our day! Our Human Resources

team at Memorial strives to cultivate an environment that attracts and engages those who want to make a lasting

impact. The New Year will also bring about a new home for our HR Department – the enhanced location will provide

updated areas for recruitment and training for our nearly 1,000 employees within the Memorial Health family.

Memorial welcomes Benjamin Bush, MD to Memorial Ear, Nose & Throat. Dr. Bush specializes in care for both pediatric and adult patients suffering from complications and disorders of the head and neck, including

    • Nasal and sinus issues

    • Tumors of the head and neck

    • Sinus surgery

    • Snoring and sleep apnea

    • Diseases of the salivary glands

    • Head and neck cancer

    • Thyroid and parathyroid diseases

    • Ear and hearing problems

    • Voice and swallow dysfunctions

“As an otolaryngologist, or an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor, my expertise lies in the care and treatment of just about anything in the head and neck region of the body (minus the eyes and brain),” shares Dr. Bush. “I initially became fascinated with this specialty because of the sheer amount of

intricacies in this area of the body. When you stop to think about it – every bite we eat, every drink we swallow, even every breath we take, goes through the head and neck. It is a key underpinning of our bodies – and keeping it healthy is crucial to our overall wellness.”

Dr. Bush completed his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and his residency in Otolaryngology | Head & Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, a program that is currently ranked fourth in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

During his residency, Dr. Bush focused on Pediatric Otolaryngology, and is able to serve pediatric patients ranging from infants to teens. He had most recently been practicing in the Jacksonville Beach, Florida area, but he and his young family have relocated to Central Ohio, and are proud to be back in Buckeye territory. Memorial Ear, Nose & Throat is located at Memorial Gateway Medical Center, 140 Coleman’s Crossing, Suite 200 in Marysville. Patient appointments can be made by calling (937) 578-4300.

Since 2004, I have been a member of the Memorial Hospital Wellness Center. I love the structured exercise program, developed and monitored by the knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Looking into the New Year, I am excited to continue my workouts in the new Wellness Center in the outpatient pavilion. I appreciate Memorial being there for me, as I work to achieve my very best health position in life.”

TOM ROTH "THE HAIR GUY" Wellness Center Member

We, as employees, have been invited to be a part of this process from the ground up. Before the very first pillar was placed, we provided feedback, shared ideas, and pitched designs that would impact our workflow and patient access…and, we were heard.

The Memorial 2020 project is an illustration of what we do best: focus and advocate for the patients we love to care for every single day. Every step has been a collaborative effort – a collective team approach – to master this vision and bring it to life. I look forward to the day that together, we greet our first wave of patients in the new Memorial Inpatient & Outpatient Pavilions. ”

ERIN RUSSO Rounding Nurse, Case Management

Each patient we care for is different. Every patient experience and clinical need is specific to that patient, in that hour, on that day. Our nursing team knows those intricacies and has had the opportunity to voice their suggestions for the design of our patient rooms.

In the pre-construction phase, a mock patient room was assembled where our teams of clinical staff weighed in on all of the details – from the angle of the bed to the exact location of every medical outlet. In addition, each room has the flexibility to meet a variety of patient needs – from general medical/surgical to critical care. The entire Memorial team is counting down the days until we can care for our patients in the very spaces we designed for them and their families.”

A pack year is a way of determining how many cigarettes a person has smoked during his or her lifetime.

    20 cigarettes = 1 pack

    How to calculate pack years

    7WELLAWARE | WINTER 2020

The “Ask a Doc” section should not replace medical advice specific to you and your unique medical history. If you have a pressing matter you would like addressed, please consult your primary care physician.

Ask a DocQ Who is eligible for the lung cancer

    screening program?

A: Jenna Hoffman, CNP - To be a candidate for the lung screening program, an individual must:

    • Be 55 to 77 years old.• Be a smoker, or a person who quit smoking less than 15 years ago. • Have a smoking history of at least 30 pack years (see inset box for formula).• Have no new symptoms that could be related to lung cancer.• Have not had a chest CT in the last 12 months.• Be healthy enough to tolerate treatment intended to cure early-stage lung cancer, if needed. It is important to remember that your doctor does not necessarily think you have cancer if they suggest a screening test. Lung screening for lung cancer is similar to other screening tests, like mammograms and colonoscopies.

    Ask a Doc

Q If I am eligible, what should my next steps be? A: Dr. Robert Rupert - If you meet the high-risk criteria above, discuss next steps with your primary care provider. They can refer you to our team. We would next have a shared-decision making discussion to review the benefits and risks of the lung cancer screening and what you can expect from the process.

The main benefit of a lung cancer screening is preventing death from the disease. Lung cancer screening finds 80% of lung cancer at an early stage, when it is more curable. Without screening, 70% of lung cancers are found at a later stage when there is little chance for a cure.

The drawbacks to consider of the low-dose chest CT is that the screening can find small spots on the lungs called nodules in at least 25% of all people who get the scan. Typically, three or four out of 100 lung nodules found are cancer, and the rest are small scars that will never affect your health.

You and your provider should discuss all of the pros and cons, as well as the future steps of the program, before proceeding.

Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer death, in both men and women across our nation. Our team at Memorial Health recognizes that early detection is the best chance for effective treatment. As such, a cross-functional team has initiated a Lung Cancer Screening Program within Memorial Hospital. Two champions of the program, Dr. Robert Rupert and Jenna Hoffman, CNP, from Memorial Oncology & Hematology, detail the screening process and how the team hopes to reduce the number of people who die from lung cancer.

    YOUASKED Q

A: Dr. Robert Rupert - Our program utilizes a low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan to take pictures of your lungs to look for signs of cancer. Years of research have revealed that having a lung screening reduces the risk of dying from the disease, in those at very high risk of developing lung cancer.

Whether your alarm clock rings for first, second, or third shift – or whether your uniform includes safety glasses or a keyboard wrist guard, workplace safety is important to every one of us. We all need to be healthy not only for our jobs, but for our families and personal commitments. Occupational health deals with all aspects of physical, mental, and social well-being and safety in the workplace. It is the umbrella for a company’s efforts to prevent injuries and hazards in every work environment – from the factory floor to the school bus to the laboratory setting. Locally, the Memorial Occupational Health team provides quality workforce healthcare for many businesses, large and small. We understand employees are the very backbone of a company, and we can deliver expert medical evaluation and treatment needed to keep them healthy and strong. Our workforce care philosophy calls for utilization of appropriate medical services, accompanied by a return-to-work management program. Businesses rely on our team of nurses and staff, along with physicians specializing in occupational health and emergency medicine, to have the back of the employee, and the company.

    Occupational Health

And we support both with expert level care. Our team is up-to-date on federal and state regulations for workforce health and safety, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). In addition, we have certified Medical Review Officers (MRO) for annual substance testing compliance. We also have years of experience with Workers Compensation to help reduce delays and expedite the claim process. Every industry faces various challenges when it comes to safety hazards and injuries and it is our goal to help employers mitigate them. Unfortunately, accidents happen, and our Memorial Occupational Health team is here for businesses to help those valuable employees return to work. And more importantly, return to life. Memorial Occupational Health partners with companies across our region, offering services at both our main hospital campus in Marysville as well as at the Memorial Urbana Medical Center. To learn more, contact the team at (937) 578-2417 or [email protected].

Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, It’s Off to Work We Go!

Allen Township Fire Department has a long-standing relationship with Memorial Health. We rely on the services of their Occupational Health staff for our wellness physicals and workplace injuries. We have also partnered with the Memorial Health Wellness Center for our department’s wellness and fitness initiative program to monitor fit-for-duty levels. Recently, we have added athletic training services by Memorial Sports Medicine in order to receive individualized fitness training. Utilizing the resources available to us through Memorial has provided healthier firefighters to serve our community.

Steve Brose Fire Chief, Allen Township

I have been the Human Resources Director for the City of Marysville for about 18 years, during which we have had a very strong partnership with Memorial Occupational Health. They are healthcare professionals that provide outstanding collaboration on every claim. The doctors are focused on providing the best possible care, while working to get each employee healthy and back to work. The staff keeps us "in-the-loop" by providing timely paperwork and reports. We consider the team at Memorial Occupational Health as more than a service provider – they are an extension of our team. And a bonus is they are equally engaged on the Union County Safety Council, thus providing top-notch expertise to all employers in our community.

Brian Dostanko Human Resources Director, City of Marysville

Memorial Occupational Health keeps Marysville Transportation "rolling" for our kids in Marysville Schools. Their team keeps us up-to-date on the latest state requirements and standards, ensuring we are compliant and ready to transport our students. Not to mention, their staff has even saved the lives of some of our bus drivers by identifying heart murmurs and other heart conditions.

Since 1989, Best Doctors has conducted one of the largest ongoing peer physician polls in health care to identify the physicians other physicians trust most. More than 50,000 doctors are asked “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in a certain specialty, whom would you choose?” The final list represents the top 5 percent of physicians most frequently recognized by their peers.

Studies show today’s healthcare consumer is using a variety of methods to track and monitor their continued health. To assist, Memorial offers a service for patients to obtain vital health information – without a prescription from a doctor.

The Laboratory at Memorial Hospital offers Patient-Ordered Lab Testing at six locations, a cost-effective solution to add to your health tracking or if you are avoiding testing due to lack of insurance or concerns over anonymity. The Patient-Ordered tests are not billed to insurance and are paid out-of-pocket.

Sometimes special preparation, such as fasting, is required to improve the accuracy of a test. After

testing, results can typically be picked up in-person, with appropriate identification, within 24 hours. Results can also be mailed to you. Our pathologist is available to explain your results, if requested.

In the event that a laboratory result is at a critical level, you will be contacted and advised to seek immediate medical attention from your physician. In all cases, test results become the responsibility of the customer and will only be forwarded to your physician, if requested.

Our Patient-Ordered Lab Testing should supplement care from your physician. To learn more, contact any of the Memorial Hospital Laboratory locations.

Witches Unite Against Breast Cancer Our Memorial family and friends had a spooky good time at the Witches Night Out at Leeds Farm this fall! Memorial is a proud sponsor of this much-anticipated annual event celebrating breast cancer survivorship and we love how teams across our organization get in the bewitching spirit!

Packed with LoveMany of our Memorial staff members donned hairnets and gloves to give back to our local community and join others to pack meals with United Way of Union County during Community Care Day. Over 37,000 meals were distributed to local food pantries and our team loved rising up against hunger.

Pennies from Heaven To celebrate National Hospital Week, Memorial held a "Penny War" fundraising competition between departments to create containers and collect coins for Blessings in a Backpack. Our Wellness Center was victorious with a poetic win that honored Dan Snyder’s son and wife, Erik and Kelly, and Kelly Daum’s sister, Tracy.

Holiday Happenings It truly is the most wonderful time of the year! Memorial Health proudly supports the City of Marysville’s Merry On Main Iceless Ice Skating event every December. And, we love how this image captures the very essence of the season – JOY & FAMILY.

Caring for Our World Over the summer, Memorial made a large

donation of previously worn scrubs to Matthew 25 Ministries. Over 150 cartons of scrubs were organized, boxed, wrapped, and prepped for

pickup – not an easy task, but thanks to our hard-working Materials and Housekeeping Departments, the goal was accomplished!

Encourage | Inspire For the third straight year, our Surgery

Department trained together and completed The Ohio State 4 Miler this

fall! Those in the department share their belief that teamwork is vital in workplace

productivity and satisfaction, and what better way to continue the hustle than

training together for an annual race!

Why We RelayThe American Cancer Society’s signature annual cancer walk, Relay For Life, has a special place in our heart, as we walk together as a Memorial Team and with many of our cancer patients and caregivers, in an effort to fight the battle against cancer.
