The weather is getting nice and the time for backyard barbeques has arrived! The whole family gathers for a nice meal in the summer sunshine….even the furry family is allowed to attend. Just remember that barbeque food is not safe for dogs and cats to consume. In particular, chicken bones can be deadly. The bones can splinter and become a sharp object that can puncture the intestines and cause fatal damage. To be on the safe side, animals should not be fed any bones that are not specifically marked for animal consumption. There is no bones about it – Keep your furry friend safe this summer season.
Donation Opportunities: The Flagler Humane Society is collecting shoes again. We welcome all shoes regardless of size, type, or condition. Cleaning out your closet – don’t throw away all those old shoes – donate so that FHS can achieve your projected goal. We were very successful in reaching our set goal last year and we would like to exceed it this year! Additional drop off locations can be found on the Flagler Humane Society website.
“Doghouse Donation Boxes” are found at all the fire stations in Flagler County. You can drop off donations anytime at your nearest fire station. FHS appreciates all donations, especially those from our Wish List (available at flaglerhumanesociety.org/wish-list). You can also purchase items via the Amazon.com link on the FHS website and ship them directly to the shelter. Stop by the Flagler Beach Fire Station and see Gibbs (a FHS alumni) hard at work!
Outreach Adoption Events: Don’t forget that FHS have volunteers and adoptable pets at the Farmer’s Market in Flagler Beach every Friday and at PetSmart in Palm Coast every Saturday and Sunday. If you are interested in volunteering at these events, please contact Katie at [email protected].
Save the date for the next Mega Adoption Event in Jacksonville. It is scheduled for July 17 – 19. If you would like to volunteer at the event, email Katie at [email protected].

RICO
Rico is a neutered male, 1 ½ years old Papillion mix. He is a sweet dog
that takes a minute to warm up to people but when he does – he is a
lover! He is going to be in need of a future surgery on his knees (many small dogs suffer from the same
condition and come through it great). The humane society is not able to
afford the surgery but is in hopes that someone will be able to help this
little boy out. Come and meet him today!

Memorial Day Ceremony to be held Monday, May 25, in Palm Coast Palm Coast – On Monday, May 25, the City of Palm Coast will have a public Memorial Day Ceremony to remember the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. The Ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. at Heroes Memorial Park, 2860 Palm Coast Pkwy. NW, Palm Coast (1/2 mile west of the Flagler County Library). The names of two men – U.S. Army Specialist Raheen Tyson Heighter and U.S. Army Sgt. Lukas T. Stanford – have been added to the Fallen Hero Memorial this spring, and the memorial will be unveiled at the ceremony. Their families and friends will be in attendance to participate in the ceremony. Specialist Heighter was a 22-year-old infantryman when he was killed north of Baghdad, Iraq, on July 24, 2003, when his convoy came under fire. He grew up on Long Island and joined the Army in June 2001. He served with the 101st Airborne, Second Battalion, 320th Field Artillery. Following Specialist Heighter’s death, his mother Cathy Heighter spearheaded the successful movement to increase death benefits for members of the Armed Forces. She also established the nonprofit organization Remembering Vets. Mrs. Heighter moved to Palm Coast in 2005. Sgt. Lukas died in the line of duty Oct. 4, 2008, in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In January 2006, his unit deployed to Tal Afar, Iraq, and eight months later moved south to Ramadi until the end of the deployment in February 2007. Upon his return from Iraq, Sgt. Stanford re-enlisted and was serving as a member of 911th Engineering Company (Technical Rescue), formerly the Military District of Washington. He was the only son of U.S Army Veteran Tim Stanford, who moved to Palm Coast in 2010. Guest speakers at the ceremony will be Commandant Jack Marshall of Marine Corps League Detachment 876, Commander Ronald Stark of Palm Coast Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8696, and Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts.
