original plot

current opening

visual approach

Memento is a movie about Leonard (Guy Pearce) who tries to track down the man who raped and

murdered his wife. However, Leonard suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss and

cannot remember past the incident. With his condition, he cannot remember what he was doing

15 minutes ago, or where he was planning to go in the present.

The original opening introduces the core theme of the movie, which is the idea of reverse and

telling the story backwards. Since Leonard is trying to track down the culprit of his wife’s death

with his rare form of memory loss, it makes sense that the story starts with the ending or the

climax of the movie: Leonard conquers his desire to kill the murderer, succeeding his plan of

revenge. The original opening is very powerful in conveying the general theme and suspense of

the plot, while playing around the idea of reverse.

While talking about the main themes within the movie, we thought about the theme of reversal

and concluded that many of the shots can be played backwards. As it was shown in the original

opening, the way that the entire sequence was reversed brought an interesting composition and

video technique. By knowing that things will be reversed, many shots have to be selective as they

should depict the idea of reversal clearly. For example, a shot of eyes blinking is not a clear indica-

tion of reversal, but a liquid pouring out of the glass into the original container is.

Summit Entertainment

Through this project, Summit Entertainment and our group would like to provide a different

opening sequence for the movie, Memento, to provide a clear narrative of the story in relation to

the different themes demonstrated the film.

In Canada, the parental rating for this movie is 14A. With the film based on the theme of re-

venge, there are many violent scenes that may be inappropriate for younger audience to watch.

Weapons, such as guns act as a key prop in the movie, therefore the audience should have some

maturity to understand the film as just a creative content.

Their needs and expectations should not exceed what they obtain from the original opening

sequence. However, I feel that the audience needs context for the general plot of the movie, and

the feeling that connects with the main character’s current situation.

Through this remake of the opening sequence, we would like to convey and introduce the dif-

ferent themes that are held in the movie such as hollowness of the main character due to a loss of

a loved one, and disruption of memory. The original opening sequence seem to only focus on a

single theme, which is the reversal of time. By introducing other themes in the opening sequence,

we believe that the audience will start the film with a clearer understanding of what the movie is

about and question what is to come in the furutr of the
