A Shot of Java Right off the main street in Downtown Glendale, down a quaint and cozy breezeway, sits a delightfully inviting and comfortable coffee house, A Shot of Java. Whether hot or iced, Lisa Dowd and her team of baristas can create whatever your heart desires from their locally roasted coffee bean varieties as well as smoothies and Italian sodas! With a few dessert or breakfast items made locally and delivered fresh to them, this is a great spot to stop for breakfast or that mid-afternoon pick-me-up! Lisa Dowd, owner, mentions that the coffee house originally started inside a salon and spa in Old Town Scottsdale many years ago, when she was an x-ray tech and wanted to leave the medical field to own her own business. She didn’t know what kind of business she wanted to own and run until she was having a conversation with a parent at one of her son’s soccer games who owned a salon and spa and he brought up the idea of having her open a coffee spot that would be located within it. After going over all the particulars, she decided to go for it. Within two months she was running the coffee spot inside the salon and spa and enjoying it. After a few years, Lisa and another friend collaborated on an in-home purse party business as an additional venture. Lisa says it took off, and another friend suggested she look into a brick and mortar store in Downtown Glendale to sell the purses there. Once that became a reality, Lisa decided it made sense to move her coffee shop there as well so she could do both at the same place and eliminate the long commute to Scottsdale (Lisa is a longtime Glendale resident). That store became Bags N Beans, which was successful but held some challenges during the two years they operated the shop, and a few short years later, her friend parted ways and Lisa focused on the coffee house portion of the business and it became what we know now, A Shot of Java. A long-time on and off member of The Glendale Chamber, Lisa states she originally joined back in the Bags N Beans days, and let her membership lapse once due to previous leadership direction, but has been a consistent member since Robert Heidt took over as President of the Chamber. Lisa is very happy with Robert and the direction he is taking the Chamber. Lisa feels very loved by the Glendale Chamber – the employees frequent her business and always greet her warmly, with genuine cheer and happiness. She receives emails about events and has gone to a few here and there when she can. Lisa said she knows she can reach out to anyone at the Glendale Chamber with questions at any time and they are always willing to assist if they can. She appreciates the support and looks forward to seeing more members stop by!
