Casual Contracts

Leo Murphy

In our Bylaws, one of the obligations of union membership is to file a union contract with the local for all engagements. I hear a lot of “reasons” members chose not to file a contract, but the most frequent reason is that members don’t feel it gets them anything. But I want to mention several good reasons to file that contract. The CFM offers liability insurance coverage for certain types of casual jobs and the process is simple: you file a contract and fill out a liability request form and send both forms to the CFM. If your request is approved, there is no cost to you for the coverage; you just pay the work dues for your contract. This coverage is designed for small groups, performing private events. The coverage is not for street fairs, outdoor events and some other events, but more and more CFM members are using this coverage every year. This coverage was started to help CFM musicians who are acting as an occasional leader and need this type of coverage. Another benefit is legal protection if your contract is inappropriately canceled or disputed. The CFM has taken purchasers to court to recover wages with no charge to you. Often when a dispute arises, by having that contract in place

the leader has a strong position to negotiate a resolution. The CFM has also served to help reach a settlement between a purchaser and a leader. If your work is outside of Local 10-208, the contract that you filed with the CFM would be sent to the correct Local, they would bill you for your work dues and if a dispute arises the CFM would pursue it on your behalf. And then there is the pension contribution. While there is concern about the pension fund, I do know that the contributions that I earned while I was a freelance musician (playing weddings, private parties and corporate events) added to the total contributions paid on my behalf. I thank those leaders for doing the right thing and filing their contracts. Those contributions will be part of my income when I retire. I don’t see my pension as my sole source of income upon retirement, but it will be an important part of that retirement. If you have any questions about the items I discussed please contact me. I would be glad to help with filing or insurance requests. My office also helps with understanding the wage scales and how they work. Whether by email or phone, reach out if you have any questions.

In this issue of the Intermezzo are the suspended and expelled lists as of March 31, 2018. We understand that sometimes the yearly dues bill gets missed due to hectic days or a change of address. We understand and we want to keep you on board! If you have any questions please give us a call or send us an email. We can clear up any issue. The office number is 312-782-0063 and you can ask for the Membership Department or for me personally. If you know any member on the suspended or expelled lists, please pass the

information along and let them know it is not too late to pay their annual membership dues and be reinstated or to rejoin from expulsion. Your yearly membership dues help keep the doors open and fund our mission to represent the needs and interests of professional musicians. If you have questions about membership or have encountered financial hardship due to illness or unforeseen circumstances, please contact us. We are proud to serve you. Thank you so much!

Spring in Chicago. Today it seems more like winter with snow, sleet, high winds and cold temperatures. By the time this Intermezzo reaches you, we will hopefully be seeing green grass, sunny skies and warmer breezes. Spring is also the time we look forward to the outdoor festivals and concerts. Things begin at Ravinia in Highland Park June 1st. The Chicago Symphony will be in residence July 12 through August 19 with 15 diverse programs including the Ravinia debut of conductor Gustavo Dudamel. There are also interesting concerts in the Martin Theatre. Check out their programming at www.ravinia.org During the Great Depression, James C. Petrillo, CFM President saw an opportunity to put unemployed musicians to work. The Grant Park Music Festival, then known as Grant Park Concerts, debuted in 1935. Now eighty-three years later, their season will begin on June 13 and go until August 18 with concerts primarily on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. All of the concerts are free and take place in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion of Millenium Park. Go to www.grantparkmusicfestival.com for this summer’s schedule. There are also free public concerts co-funded by the Music Performance Trust Fund throughout Chicago. These include the Park Ridge Fine Arts Society led by Barbara Schubert in Hodges Park in Park Ridge; two park concerts with the City Lights Orchestra conducted by Rich Daniels presented by the Evergreen Park District and the Park District of Orland Park; Frank Winkler’s Symphonic Pops Orchestra at the Prairie Arts Center in Schaumburg; the Chicago Philharmonic returning to the Humbolt Park Boathouse; and the Chicago Sinfonietta in Millenium Park. Last, but not least, don’t forget to visit Wrigley Field to cheer on our Chicago Cubs and listen to the wonderful CFM organist Gary Pressy. Enjoy the season.

Henry Griffin - Voice (Baritone)

The 2018 Chicago Federation of Musicians Scholarship recipient is Henry Griffin, son of Chicago Federation of Musicians members David Griffin (of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and Susan Warner (of the Lyric Opera Orchestra). Henry is currently finishing high school at Oak Park and River Forest High School. His instrument is voice (Baritone) and has performed as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago and serves as a canter at St. Giles Church in Oak Park, IL. Henry also plays the piano and trumpet. He also composes and arranges music for various ensembles. He has been accepted into the University of Cincinnati and is waiting to hear from other universities. Henry also enjoys birding. He founded the organization “Oak Park Bird Walks” and has helped raise over a thousand dollars to benefit nature conservancies around the world. He leads bird walks and writes newsletters for this organization. Congratulations to Henry and his family. We wish him all the best as he pursues his education and his career.

Elise Dalleska and Sam Bradshaw presented several

Music In The Schools programs on March 24 and 25 at the

North Park Nature Center. Their presentation was part of

the center’s Maple Syrup Festival and drew large crowds,

with over 1700 people attending the two day event.
