WASATCH MOUNTAIN CLUB BOARD

REPORT June 1

The board passed a policy stating that participants on boating trips are liable for club equipment lost or damaged on the trip up to $15 per person.

There is a new category of lodge rental: Summer mid-week (Sunday - Thursday). The rental fee for this category is $50.

The board authorized special mailings to inform all members about the Canyon Master Plan scenarios, and to notify members about public hearings on these scenarios. It is very likely that the scenarios will be presented & the public hearings scheduled on short notice, making it impossible to inform the members in any other way.

Robert Waite was made an honorary member of the clu.b in recognition of his efforts to establish Great Basin National Park.

Next board meeting: July 6.

A WORD TO PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS

Prospective members are welcome on all Club activities, with the following exceptions:

l) Thursday Evening Hikes are for members only. However, prospective members may attend if the hike is their second qualifying activity for membership and they submit their dues check and application form to the leader before the hike.

2) Boating trips are for members. However, prospective members may attend a weekend trip if they use the trip as their qualifying activity (each day counts as one activity.)

3) A trip leader may choose to limit a trip to members, especially if there is limited space.

THURSDAY EVENING HIKE INFORMATION

These hikes are for members only except prospective members may use them as the second and final qualifying activity for membership provided their dues check and application are submitted to the leader prior to the hike. Meet at 6:30 pm; all hikes leave the meeting place at 6:45 pm PROMPT! All participants must sign the liability release form. Hikes are never cancelled for any reason including bad weather, so wear appropriate clothing. Boots will be required if the trail is in mud or snow. No dogs. Hikes in Mill Creek Canyon meet in Olympus Hills parking lot at 3900 Wasatch Blvd. just south of the defunct Bagel Nosh. Hikes in Big Cottonwood meet at the "Storm Mountain Quartzites• geology sign, 2.9 miles up the canyon (r.h. side) from the stop light. Hike leader: Dale Green.

A WORD ABOUT WMC HIKES

The hike rating indicates the difficulty of the hike. Hikes rated under 5 are easy, 5-8 are intermediate, above 8 are difficult. If the rating says "about" (for example "about 4.0"), it means the rating is an approximate guide. A hike may be more difficult than the rating would suggest. Watch for the terms "exposure", "rock scrambling", "bush whacking", and "steep". These terms, and the rating system, are fully described in the April 1986 Rambler.

If you are just getting into hiking, you may find that a hike's description does not tell you everything you want to know. If so, don't feel shy about calling the leader ahead of time to be sure your abilities are a match for the hike, and to know if it is the kind of experience you are looking for. Please come to the hike with proper equipment: adequate clothing, footwear, food, water, and any special equipment required for that hike. You are expected to stay with the group once you have signed the release form. Do not jackrabbit ahead of the group, or pretend that you are "Tigger".

A WORD ABOUT WMC BICYCLE RIDES

Rides are rated Not Too Difficult (NTD), Moderate (MOD), or Most Difficult (MSD). These ratings are a subjective evaluation taking into consideration mileage and difficulty (hills). NTD rides will generally be less than 30 miles. MOD rides will be 30 to 50 hilly or up to 60 flat miles. MDS rides will be over 50 hilly or 60 flat miles. On all but n.ewcomer rides, it is required that riders be equipped to be self-sufficient, i.e., bring water, food, tire repair tools, extra tubes, ·repair knowledge, and money. Inexperienced riders or riders unsure of their ability on a bicycle should consider protective gear. Sunscreen is also suggested. Helmets may be required on certain rides.

CONSERVATION NOTES by Chris Biltoft and Mary Fleming

Working in the Wasatch: Trail Mnx. Day The Club is sponsoring a major trail maintenance and cleanup effort on Saturday, 16 July. We will meet at 9:30 near the Big Cottonwood Canyon geology sign to organize work crews and distribute tools. Volunteers for Ferguson Canyon should bring their shears or lopers. The Forest Service will supply other tools. One crew will work on litter control and on dispersing signs of illegal campsites & fire rings around the Brighton Lakes. Other crews will disperse to projects around the Brighton Lakes trail complex. By 3 pm participants can congregate at the Lodge for a Club-sponsored cookout. Crews finishing early can go to the Lodge and join other groups working there. We need a lot of help, so everyone is encouraged to come. Volunteers to help with the cookout are needed as well. Bring work gloves, water, and a light lunch for a strenuous but rewarding day working in the Wasatch. If you bring tools, mark them for identification. Call Chris Biltoft or Mary Fleming at #359-5645 for details.

The Global Threat of Deforestation The World Resources Institute (WAI) has released a report "The Forest for the Trees? Government Policies and the Misuse of Forest Resources" that blames misguided policies for much of the damage to the world's forests. In This report, as summarized by Janet Raloff in the June 4 issue of Science News, WAI argues that billions of dollars are wasted annually through misuse of forest resources. The most severe problems occur in the tropics where deforestation causes massive soil erosion, triggers species extinctions, and increases the atmosphere's carbon dioxide burden. However, the US Forest Service policy of below-cost timber sales on land unsuitable or marginally suitable for logging adds to the toll. This practice is currently being used to decimate our Uinta forests. WAI estimates that the Forest Service could save $100 million annually by simply leaving these economically unsuitable areas for recreational use. It is also difficult to convince other countries to manage their forest resources wisely when our own Forest Service engages in counterproductive management practices.

Interpretive Area Volunteers Needed The Utah Society for Environmental Education is forming an Alliance for Interpretive Natural Areas. The Alliance goal is to create and maintain interpretive natural areas for the Salt Lake region and heighten public awareness through interpretive centers and educational programs. The Alliance will also coordinate environmental and conservation issues with neighborhood and city councils. The Club needs volunteers to serve on the Alliance. For more information contact Danielle Paterson at 363-6037.

Master Plan Goes Public Components of the Canyons Master Plan are presented as four 'scenarios' developed within certain Goals, Objectives and Rules. These include watershed protection, access to public land, and preservation of property rights. The final plan may include a combination of components from these scenarios. Copies of the scenarios are available at SL Planning Div., 2001 So State, Rm # 3700. The handling of hot issues is outlined below.

Dispersed Recreation: Scenarios A & B preserves all land now used for dispersed recreation such as back country skiing and hiking. Alpine skiing would not be expanded into White Pine and Twin Lakes. All scenarios recommend increased parking and trailhead access for dispersed recreation.

Alpine Skiing: Scenario 'C' expands resort skiing to Twin Lakes and portions of White Pine, while 'D' adds Silver Fork, Clayton Peak, and Grizzly Gulch, with maximum commercial development.

Interconnect appears with various guises in scenarios B, C, & D. "B" connects Park City to Big Cottonwood by paving the Guardsman Pass road, and/or adding ski lifts. "C" extends interconnect into Little Cottonwood. "D" turns Park City and the Canyons into one big ski resort. The scenario choices clearly indicate that pressure is on to ratchet development forward. Vigorous public support for dispersed recreation in needed during the August comment period. The Club and Save Our Canyons plan an information mailing to help you prepare a comment.

MOUNTAINEERING

MOUNTAINEERING RAMBLINGS

by John Kennington

The climbing season is in high gear. We have quite an active contingent presently participating. Thursday nights at Storm Mountain not only off er a premier social opportunity, but there is some climbing that occurs also. Come on up and put the squeeze on some rock. The burgers are delectable too!

The Lone Peak High Camp scheduled for July 4th weekend should be one of the best outings of the season. Close to home, but removed from the city, excellent climbing opportunities exist in a beautiful alpine setting. Skip the driving and get a jump on the hiking. There should be plenty of time to ponder the scene and climb too. A good time is assured for all.

The initial City of Rocks climbing trip was a resounding success and the weather even cooperated too! Partly cloudy and cool made for hot climbing. This veritable climber's candy store offers immense variety at immodest convenience. Watch the Rambler for upcoming return trips.

July is the critical month for the Wasatch Canyons Master Plan. This period will constitute the public comment phase of the scenario selection process for the Plan. Please become involved to defend the activities for which you think the canyons should be used. The forces for more extensive development' in the canyons are formidable. Those who advocate the preservation of dispersed recreational interests must speak out! For more information call me (942-0693) or the Conservation Directors of the Club.

TRAILHEAD ACCESS REPORT

by Trudy Healy

Not much has been accomplished since the last report in this column, though some people are really hard at work; don't give up hope yet! As reported last November, the SLC Planning and Zoning with Neil Hinckley's WMC Committee, secured quite a few accesses and is working on others. County Planning and Zoning seems to recognize the new trend now too and is starting to be more co-operative.

Rich Rush, in charge of Trail Access for the Forest Service, is eager to tackle our trail access problems. Main priorities for the FS are Bells Canyon and Olympus. Bells continues to be a difficult situation, but there are possibilities. The FS had meetings with various government agencies. Board of Health (Bells is no problem, they said), County P&Z, etc. We should know more within a month. Watch this column for exciting news!

The ·beginning of Olympus Trail passes through private property too and may have to be relocated (you don't want to walk through somebody's brand new living room with your dirty boots, do you?), but the owners seem to be quite understanding.

There's no solution yet for Perkins, it doesn't look too good for the challenging west ridge. As to the continued access of Mill A Gulch (150 acres surrounding it are up for sale), of special concern to people with an interest in geology, and of course to ski tourers, Rich Rusk is going to look into its status. We hope he'll be successful in saving it for the public.

John Riley is trying to get the Canyon Master Plan people interested in the Trail Access problem. Why this was ignored for so long seems hard to understand.

Things don't look too bad, nor too good. Be alert! Watch for possible trail access blockage and inform Norm Fish or anyone on the Trail Access Committee.

MEMBERSHIP FEES REDUCED FOR STUDENTS

The WMC Board is concerned with the "ageing" of the membership and is attempting to attract younger members to take over the club activities in future years. As part of this attempt, a reduction in membership dues for full time students 18 years of age or older was approved by the Board. A yearly membership fee of $15.00 was set for members who are full time students.

The average age of the new members for the last 3 months is 40 years. As you can see we are not attracting younger members to the club. Solutions to this situation will be welcomed. If you want to comment please contact me or John Veranth.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

I am setting up a membership committee to recommend membership policy, help maintain the database, and help provide membership material to new and prospective members. The committee members would need only to supply several hours each month.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you are willing to help the WMC in this capacity. This is the busiest time of the year for membership activity. We receive about 50 requests for Ramblers and membership information and 30 membership applications each month. These requests and applications require several responses and mailing of materials.

My request for help last time met with very limited success so a working committee was not formed. Please come through for me this time.

NEW MEMBER APPLICATION FEE

The $5.00 application fee for new members covers the costs of the materials sent to new members. These materials and mailing costs include: 1st class mailing for the Rambler,

WMC cloth patch, copies of the WMC governing documents, 1st class postage for mailing acknowledgement letters and materials.

The $5.00 reinstatement fee is a penalty for not renewing on time.

It is not required for prior members seeking reinstatement to obtain activity leaders' signatures. It is required that the reinstatement form be completed with the desire to receive the Rambler and the form signed. These are Postal Service requirements and necessary for our 2nd class mailing permit.

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN

If you find membership in the WMC to be worthwhile, invite your friends and coworkers, especially the younger ones, to join us.

If you are dissatisfied with the WMC please contact one of the Board with your reasons. We want to provide quality outdoor recreation to all our members. If you are not getting that, let's see where the problem is, and hopefully correct it.

FROM THE

BOA TING DIRECTOR

by Jeff Barrell

Run-off was sure short, but sweet and I hope all you boaters out there got a taste of it. We've some great trips this year with the timely permits hitting run-off just right. Thanks to all those people who contribute towards making these river trips run smoothly. We have had some problems this year with damage and loss of equipment; the biggest problem being with the vans we rent from Holiday rental. The Club has been hard on these vans and Holiday's management feels that our business is not off setting the damage to the vans. Holiday has placed restrictions concerning people and trailer for future rentals (see adjacent notice). It is unfortunate because damages are avoidable by practicing the following:

1- Remove the plastic strip on the bumper before attaching the bumper hitch. Replace when returning the van.

2- Load the trailer so most of the weight lies over the wheels rather than having the weight lie in front and on the bumper.

3- Do NOT walk on the roof when tying down kayaks and canoes. Use the step ladder or a cooler instead.

Please take care of Club and personal equipment during a trip. Any damage or loss of equipment used for the group will be repaired or replaced by the group with costs divided between the group.

SAFETY on the river can mean the difference between a short swim and a casualty. · Ken McKarthy will teach another river safety class July 8-10 for $30 per person. I took this class last year and feel it is well worth the time and money. The course will include river hazards (cause and prevention), safety gear and use, knots and rope systems (with practice), rescue rope techniques and practice, and a chance to put it all together on the Weber river. A minimum number of people is needed, so please register with Jeff Barrell at 943-2836 or send $30 to 6723S 1560E, SLC, UT 8412 l.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR KAYAKERS~ CANOEIST, RAFTERS OR ANYONE WHO RENT=, VANS

by Jeff and Carl

Holiday Payless Rent-A-Car has had some concerns over treatment of their vans, specifically I) damage done to the van roof from roof racks and to bumpers from trailers, and 2) the heavy load on their vans from towing trailers, and from carrying roof racks and 15 people. Holiday sells their vans after two years and are concerned about the value of the vans if they have been abused. They have agreed to continue to allow our use of their vans with roof racks and trailers under the following conditions:

1) The largest trailer allowed is a 5' X 8' trailer. Also when using a trailer, remove the plastic strip that covers the back of the bumper where the trailer hitch fits. Put in inside the van and remember to replace it after the trip is over.

2) Never stand or walk on the roof of the van. To tie up kayaks or canoes, stand on a cooler, the step ladder, or whatever. Someone told me once that they couldn't tie their kayak on without standing on the roof; if you feel that way, leave the kayak or canoe at home. It is more important not to stand on the roof than to take kayaks or canoes.

3) No more than 12 people in the van. No big deal; it'll be more comfortable with only 12 people on the van. I get claustrophobic in a loaded van anyway.

4) We lose the 10% discount. C'est la vie.

A note about loading trailers. Although the instructions on loading trailers say to load at least 60% of the weight to the front of the mid-line of the trailer, in this case more is not better. There are two weight-bearing components of a trailer, the trailer wheels and the van bumper. If you put too much of the weight in a trailer forward, most of the weight in and of the trailer will rest on the bumper. The bumpers are expensive. The trip will pay any damage to the van bumper caused by the trailer (or to the roof caused by the roof rack). Load 60% of the weight forward but not much more than that. The proper weight-bearing components of a trailer are the wheels.

These new rules do not just apply for Club boating trips but for anyone in the WMC who rents vans with the intention of using them to carry a roof rack and/or a trailer. These new rules are in granite; think of them as having come down the mountain engraved on tablets. Our relationship with Holiday is important and we would like to continue it. Thanks everybody.

LODGE DIRECTOR

by Alexis Ketner and Vince Desimone

LODGE WORK PARTY SCHEDULE SET

A full schedule of activities has been set for lodge improvements this summer. The ambitious work schedule will require the active participation of all Club members. Almost every member has enjoyed the benefits of our mountain retreat for parties and overnight outings. During the coming weeks each member will be asked to come and help take care of their second home.

And yes, lodge work parties are also a lot of fun and fellowship. The camaraderie and satisfaction derived from working together is a definite benefit. Participants are provided with a free lunch and free admission to any social activity at the lodge sponsored by the club the day of the work party. Attendance at a work party also counts as a qualifying activity for prospective members.

The tasks to be performed range from simple to complex. No special skills are required for a member to participate. Of course, those with highly specialized skills such as welding, masonry, carpentry, plastering, painting, plumbing, and electrical are needed. This is also a way for members to improve their knowledge and skills of building and maintenance, since people performing highly skilled tasks are assigned others to assist and thus learn.

A different Club member will have responsibility for a particular task for a day. They will be contacting others in the Club to come and work on their project. Those who have not been contacted are encouraged to attend on work party days to assume leadership on another project or to join in one of the work teams.

Work parties are currently scheduled on the Saturdays of July 9, 16, and 23. Members who wish to spend the night at the lodge Friday to get an early start are encouraged to do so. Contact the lodge director to get a key. Members coming up from the valley are encouraged to arrive by 1 O am, and those participating in Club hikes to arrive after the hike.

The following is a partial list of projects for the short summer season:

Initial water system development Finish paneling in women's dorm Plasterboard work in both dorms Paint dorms Insulate ceilings in both dorms Install door to annex Insulate and panel east wall upstairs Clean up entire property Landscape and grading Construct walkway between front porch &

patio Erect log barriers around parking Enhance and sign entry way Sweep chimney Paint exterior dormers Aesthetic improvements to toilet

& waiting room Upgrade entrance Remove coal furnace from basement Electrical wiring and lighting improvements Cut firewood Interior cleanup Window washing Fire escape railing and gratings

This schedule to maintain and improve the lodge will require the active participation of many people. Members are encouraged to contact the lodge director to vol8unteer to work and to willingly participate when asked. Thanks for your help!

TRIP· TALK

ARCHES CAR CAMP

May 13, 1988 by Noel deNevers

This year I couldn't get the group campsite for Mothers Day because I was 2 hours too late asking for it on the first day reservations were accepted. I took the next weekend, and was lucky on weather, because we had warm sunny weather while Mothers Day did not.

That campsite permit allows 50 people and 10 cars. In the past we never had more than 50 people want to come. This year everyone wanted to come, so that after the usual overbooking I turned away 20 people who wanted to come. Even so we were in trouble. The ranger can't count bodies, so if there were more than 50 people, it wasn't obvious from the road. But the ranger can count cars, and at one time we had 19. That led to me getting a warning citation, and to us having to move the cars out of the campground.

Other than that minor administrative hassle, it was a nice weekend. The weather was good. There were about 15 kids in the age range 3 to 6 and they all seemed to enjoy each other's company. On the traditional Fiery Furnace walk lots of little kids came, as well as three sleeping infants in backpacks. Someone counted 40 people.

Alas, next year I will have to be more restrictive on the trip size, limiting reservations to 10 cars. Perhaps someone else would like to reserve the group campground for some other weekend in the spring.

Those present were the Coles, Bertleson, Healy, Hathaway, Olsen, Kondo, Goss, Honn, Leventhal, Daily, Chambers, Turner, Sukow, Steffy, Barker and Barth and deNevers families or groups.

MOUNT OGDEN HIKE

May 15, 1988 by Fred DuVall

Three hikers joined myself and Karla at the meeting point at 8:30 am, as planned. The weather was perfect (clear and cool) as we arrived at the trail head. The five of us headed east up the Taylor Canyon trail, along the stream, to a point where the trail switches back toward the west, and begins ascending the ridge on the south side of Taylor Canyon. This is an excellent trail that switch backs through a heavily forested area with many scenic view points. About half way up the ridge, we encountered three horses, complete with human drivers, on their way to Malan's Basin. At the top of the ridge we arrived at a minor summit shich is called Malan's Peak. After a brief rest we headed east into Malan's Basin, losing a few feet of vertical. Karla and Ruth decided to return to the trail head from this point, because of other commitments.

Heading east from Malan's Basin we soon ran out of trail and continued our ascent in the gully which approaches the saddle just south of Mt Ogden. The gully was still snow filled to a point approximately 500 feet below the saddle. However, the rest of the route was free of snow and generally dry. We arrived at the Mt. Odgen summit at about 12:30 where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch and much needed rest.

We headed back down at about 1:15 retracing our ascent route. The snow filled gulley provided for some excellent glissading on the way back. We arrived back at the trail head at about 3:30 pm. The weather was kind to us and a very enjoyable time was had by all. Ed Howard made the day complete with an invite to his place for a couple of excellent home brews.

Hikers were: Ruth Wenberg, Phil Fikkan, Ed Howard, Karla DuVall, and Fred DuVall (leader).

THE YAMPA RIVER

May 20 - 23 by Kathy Klein

The Yampa trip was great - fun was had by all. Everyone worked together as a team to make logistics go smoothly and Patty Giffin did a good job co-ordinating our efforts. The trip included Patty, Allan Gavere, Tony Torri, Craig Robison, Phyllis Robison, Chuck Denton, Phil Giles, Ken Workman, Bill Adams, Bob Stevenson, Ken Lovisa, Nancy Orr, Max Hollaway, Larry Hardebeck, Dan Tawa, Randy and Kathy Klein.

The packing at the shed went well. We took a van and 2 private cars. The van had difficulties - "spells" just like a little old lady. At times it was a "gutless wonder" and sometimes it ran like a champ. Although we left the shed about 7:30 or 8:00 PM, we didn't arrive at the put-in (Deerlodge) until about 3:00 AM since the van was so sluggish.

The temperature was chilly on Friday at the put-in (46) but spirits were high and the water was high. We hit peak run-off on Friday at about 14,500 cfs! We had an added twist with the run-off, which included looking out for trees, logs, lumber with spikes, etc. floating down the river. This curbed the hard boaters' appetite for surfing since no one seemed anxious to wrestle with these inanimate alligators. The waves were big and nearly continous on our first day, and everyone really enjoyed this stretch. Over all the weather was great: 70 - 75 during the day; down to 40 most of the nights (down to 28 one night), lots of sunshine and very little wind. The scenery was "primo" with lots of spring green colors and an occasional flaming red cactus.

Little Joe rapid had a sizable hole at the top which threw Ken Lovisa out of his oar rig. This was the first time I ever saw an oarsman do a self rescue! He crawled back in his boat by grabbing the cargo net. He survived with some scratches and bruises.

The first evening at Teepee campground, Chuck surprised everyone with some quite

potent marinated cherries, which were savored by the hardiest of souls. The second day on the river we had to cover 26 miles, so we got up early to accomplish this, but found that it was no problem to cover this distance at high flow. We hiked to some Indian ruins, which were quite spectacular. At the ruins we saw a Say's Phoebe sitting on her nest.

We camped at Laddie campground where Ken Lovisa made a wonderful sauna to share with everyone. There was plenty of wildlife at this camp. Dan Tawa found a mouse making itself at home in his sleeping bag but Dan didn't share with the poor little thing. The Violetgreen Swallows were very active on the cliffs above camp and there were some warblers singing. There was also one very neat worm but it met a sad ending in the coffee pot where Nancy found it when she was cleaning up in the morning.

Warm Springs rapid got our hearts started, but everyone made it through safely (with two "walks" and one swim). Allan managed to see 6 sheep below this rapid. We hiked to Whispering Cave, which is spectacular! I would do the trip again just to see this cave!

THE CONFUSION RANGE

May 14, 1988 by Donn Seeley

It was 7:30 in the morning on a Saturday in the middle of May. Three determined desert rats (Dick Dougherty, Aaron Jones, Donn Seeley) met in the scenic K-Mart parking lot on 21st South and set off westwards. Once we emerged from the infernal fumes and vapors of Orem and Provo, the day proved to be clear and temperate, perfect weather. The glistening white peaks of the Deep Creek Range were visible from nearly a hundred miles away.

Some two hundred miles out from Salt Lake, we reached the turn-off, in Tule Valley. Tule Valley is unusually narrow for a valley in the Great Basin - it is bounded on both sides by imposing cliffs in · the House Range and the Confusion Range, and it is partly blocked by a little rumple of hiHs called the Barn at the southern end. Our road climbed the alluvial fans below the wall of the Confusion Range and entered a channel between the Barn and the cliffs called Blind Valley. Our first stop was a break in the cliffs called Bonny Stairs Canyon. We strolled up the wash admiring the high pinnacles and ledges, and after 45 minutes we reached the head of the canyon, where the walls converged into a narrow slot. We cooled off in the shade below an impressive pour-off.

We moved on south down the Confusion Range to Fossil Mountain. I think Fossil Canyon would have been a more appropriate name for the area, since the really good fossils appear in Ordovician strata exposed in the banks of the wash that winds down to Blind Valley on the north side of the mountain. These beds contain the best brachiopod exposures I've ever seen - flat slabs packed so densely with brachs that the stone appears to be solid fossils. Other fossils turned up too; we spotted bryozoans and some trilobite fragments. Higher up the slope we found some curious impressions in quartzite, twisted, ropy patterns called Phycoides.

We picked our way out through a series of ledges to the top of the mountain (only 6649

50

feet high, but a sweaty 1000 feet above Blind Valley). The view was wonderful - Frisco Peak to the south with a sprinkling of snow, blue Sevier Lake to the east, Notch Peak to the north, the amazingly twisted and broken spine of the Confusion Range to the west and north. In the far western distance we could see snowy Wheeler Peak in the Snake Range, while the skyline in the east rose to the Tushar Mountains. The local area was fascinating too; to the west lie little flat-topped buttes and a c.;anyon that rises in rounded steps into the interior of the range, and to the east is the tangle of the Barn, where faulting has shifted the quartzite terraces down by more than a thousand feet. Nothing was visible of the ghost town of Ibex at the foot of the Barn; apparently it was completely destroyed by fire some years ago.

About 17 miles by dirt road south and west of Fossil Mountain is Crystal Peak. Crystal Peak is an anomaly in the landscape. Its white bulk is visible from many miles away, poking up in the saddle between the Wah Wah Range and the Confusion Range; look for it to the south when you drive US 6/50 in the Snake Valley. The rock is a very pale rhyolite. It has a consistency like the granite in the Deep Creeks and erodes into similarly odd fluted shapes, but close up it is clearly lava, for it is speckled with darker chunks of country rock, mostly limestone or dolomite. Pine trees grow low here, including courageous ponderosa pines -all that's left of the biggest specimen is an axe-hewn stump, alas. The rock is probably too crumbly for comfortable climbing, althought it did appear to be possible to scramble up to the top of the peak.

Despite the harshness of the desert in this corner of Utah, there were many living things to be seen. A collared lizard posed for us at Fossil Mountain. A garter snake coiled in a sagebrush in Bonny Stairs Canyon; a couple lazy rattlesnakes lying in the road became dinner for ravens. Hawks spun in circles over the cliffs of the Confusion Range, no doubt in wait for the little gray· rodents (ground squirrels?) that infested the bush. Cactus flowers were in bloom - blood red and shocking pink are fashionable this year. The most spectacular animal encounter was with a

jet-assisted pronghorn on the Snake Valley road; it raised a cloud of dust to rival our own.

Driving back to Delta, the late evening sun caught the west face of Sawtooth Mountain in the House Range, sharply defining all the notches and cleavages and verticalities. On my next trip out that way, I'll definitely put it on my itinerary. Thanks to Dick and Aaron for making this fun trip a reality and for enduring 500 miles of driving in one day without complaint.

BEARTRAP FORK TO DESOLATION LAKE

May 28, 1988 by Ted York

On May 28, Ellie Ienatsch led six hikers up Beartrap Fork to the ridge. The creek was very low and small amounts of snow were only on the northeast facing slopes 2/3 of the way up the trail. The trail is on the east side of the creek for 2/3 of the trip and there are cairns to mark the crossing to the west side of the creek. The remaining hike up the west side of the creek is without vegetation, or much trail, and very steep.

The view from the ridge was terrific, including such peaks as Superior, Twins, Mineral Basin, Kessler, Timpanogos in the background, and nearby, Gobblers Knob and Mt Raymond.

After lunch we descended on the ridge trail overlooking Jeremy Ranch, passing partially frozen Desolation Lake, checking a porcupine home below the meadow, and using the new trailhead of Mill D to return to a car left at the Meeting of the Glaciers sign.

Hikers were Ellie Ienatsch, Joan Stevens, Sandy Niederhauser, Duke Bush, Kimberly Curtis, Sharon Coons, and Ted York.

We took two hours to go up Beartrap Fork, about I hour on top, and two hours to come down by Mill D.

FLOWER HIKE TO GREENS BASIN

June 4, 1988 by Evelyn Clayton

This year's flower hike was led by Ellie Ienatch, who passed on identifications she learned from the "old ones" on previous hikes. All flowers were named except a tiny yellow variety, unknown to any of us. The flower admirers went to Greens Basin and a sidelight included a look at a goshawk nest and an underground cabin.

Participants included: Ellie Ienatch (the leader), Geoff and Sandy Freethey, Ted York, Leah Mancini, Kathy Coover, Uli Hegewald, Jerry Hatch, Marge Biggs, Denis Kelly, Julie Jones, Larry Skidmore, Karen Perkins, and Evelyn Clayton. 51

WASATCH INTERPRETIVE ASSOCIATION

Club member Mike Herrick was recently elected president of the Wasatch Interpretive Association. On June 13 Mike met with Forest Service personnel to discuss the Forest Service plans for educational contacts with the public who use the National Forests.

The Forest Service is in need of volunteers to assist in monitoring trail usage on the Wasatch Front this summer. Volunteers will distribute low-impact information, monitor the numbers and type of visitors, identify problem areas with respect to trail maintenance and vandalism, and otherwise assist the Forest Service in a program designed to educate the public on proper conduct in the National Forest. Activities will focus primarily on the trail heads at White Pine, Mill D South, Mill D North and Bigwater on Saturdays, Sundays, and perhaps on Friday afternoons. Volunteers will probably be asked to work one day a month. Such educational contacts have become a necessity as more and · more people seek recreation in the National Forests. This is your opportunity to lend a helping hand in the preservation of our trails. To volunteer, call Mike Herrick at 56 I -04 72 or Jo Garuccio at the Forest Service District Office, 524-5042.
