Membership & Leadership Development (MLD)Program

Right now. . .Almost every issue & every activity is politicized. For example…. Voters’ service – even voter registration Judicial selection and independence Environmental safeguards Health care Women’s choice…….and on and on.

The League is needed

NOW as much as in 1920!

What if… the League were to do its good work in these next critical years in a focused and intentional way…and with more members?

Who would benefit? What could those benefits look like? What could it mean for the future?

So -- how do we get there?

Core of MLD…

What if?

Who else?

Yes, and…

“The MLD experience was a light bulb moment for us--providing focus and tools for membership development.  We started asking our friends and neighbors, and inviting the community to join at our events and, surprisingly, the memberships started rolling in.”

Sue Hesselgesser, MLD team member &

E.D., LWV Greater Dayton Area.

“One of the key benefits of the MLD program is that it provides participating Leagues with strategies and resources to support and train new League leaders and provide them with the experience and confidence to take on enhanced leadership roles.” Nancy Brown, LWVO President

“It’s a lot of fun helping a local League work on their plan for new members and mentoring new leaders, and I get to celebrate with them as they grow.  I’m lucky to be an MLD coach and recommend coaching to anyone who enjoys being part of a team.”

Marlene Muse, MLD Coach

Ohio MLD Program Beginning in 2013: 11 local LWVs Chillicothe/R.C. Dayton Shaker Hgts

Expectations for Participating LeaguesParticipate for at least 2 years - though the

hope is, indefinitely. Field a team (2-4 people) to be trained and to

work with a state coach and their local board. Team & board develop/implement a MLD plan. Integrate best practices into the events

and activities the League plans. Monthly phone call: local team & their coach. Board training on MLD (1 hour) MLD Program regularly on the board agenda.

Your MLD Team’s Role in Your League: Work with you, the board, to design and

implement an MLD plan for your League.

Provide resources to committees, board, etc.

Give an MLD presentation at each board meeting.

NOT to do everything themselves!

Coaches’ Role: Mentor Guidance/Resources

Cheerleader Accountability

NOT the LL “doer” or “problem solver”

The key word...

“intentional.”
