CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Edwin (Eddie) M. Benfield Bio Currently, I am the Supervisor of Nuclear Station Sciences for the Radiation Protection department at Duke Energy's Catawba Nuclear Station with oversight of six direct reports that are responsible for regulatory compliance and industry best practices. I have been in this position for two years and prior to that I worked as a field level technician in the areas of Surveillance and Control, Compliance, Respiratory Protection, Instrument Calibration, Radiation Protection Instructor responsible for Initial and Continuing Training, and Radiological Effluents supervisor. All told, I have 32 years of experience in the Radiation Protection field.
In 1996, I became a Registered Radiation Protection Technologist and have served as a member of the NRRPT Panel of Examiners, Chairman of the Awards/Scholarship committee, Vice-Chairman of the NRRPT Board of Directors and Chairman of the Exam Performance Committee. I have been married to my wonderful wife, Anita, for 30 years, and have a 26 year old son, Clinton. My hobbies include playing the guitar, going to the beach, salt water angling, golfing with my son, traveling and spending time with my wife. Edwin (Eddie) M. REGISTRATION MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
The NRRPT Registration Maintenance Program is designed to help assure that Registered Radiation Protection Technologists (RRPTs) continue to maintain their professional qualification. The program requires RRPTs to participate in professional development activities after their initial registration, and it monitors those activities on a periodic basis. Meeting the requirements of the program is mandatory to maintain active registration. In addition, the RRPT must maintain membership in the Registry for the entire maintenance cycle. The Registration Maintenance Program began January 1, 1999 and requires 20 points to be earned in each five-year cycle. The cycle begins and ends on a calendar year basis, i.e., begins January 1 of the first year of the cycle and ends December 31 of the last year of the cycle. All points must be earned within the cycle to which they apply. For RRPTs registered on or before January 1, 1999, the first cycle will begin on that date. The first cycle for those registered after January 1, 1999, will begin on January 1 of the year following registration. If you have comments or questions please contact Mark Bayless, Continuing Education Committee Chairman at [email protected]. COLLEGE CREDITS The American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT) has evaluated and recommended college credit for 1 of the NRRPT courses. The American Council on Education, the major coordinating body for all the nation's higher education institutions, seeks to provide leadership and a unifying voice on key higher education issues and to influence public policy through advocacy, research, and program initiatives. ACE CREDIT connects workplace learning with colleges and universities by helping adults gain access to academic credit at colleges and universities for formal courses and examinations taken in the workplace or other settings outside traditional higher education. For more than 30 years, colleges and universities have trusted ACE CREDIT to provide reliable course equivalency information to facilitate their decisions to award academic credit. For more information, visit the ACE CREDIT website http://www.acenet.edu/acecredit.
