The financial results for the Society’s year ended December 31, 2016, remained healthy. Unrestricted cash was $185,000, which, as the annual report stated last year, includes a “rainy day fund “of $88,000 - equal to approximately three months of operating expenses. Even though these funds have not been needed for operations for almost two years, the Finance Committee as well as the Board, continue to consider the fund necessary as event revenue is still somewhat dependent on weather. It is worthy of noting however, that the PreTour portion of the Haus un Garten Tour has become less weather dependent over the last several years as it sells out in advance and continues to add additional revenue, such as golf cart rentals.

Restricted funds increased over $100,000 in 2016 with a balance of $882,000 at year end. The increase resulted primarily from another successful Tea event as well as an increase in the “For the Good of the Neighborhood” fund, which is where the annual excess of revenues over expenses are deposited. The Board and the Finance Committee remain committed to the restricting of funds for specific purposes, such as extraordinary maintenance and major building costs in order to maintain adequate operating funds of the Society for day-to-day operating expenses.

The Society enjoyed another successful year of operations in 2016. Revenues increase by $142,000 due to several factors. In-kind gifts increase by over $65,000 as a result of the continued strong support of the members, non-member friends and the community in general. Also, investment gains increased by $50,000 as the result of a more focused investment strategy, as well as an improved investment market. Expenses were in line with budgeted amounts and the increase in Net Assets for the year was $52,000 (excess of revenues over expenses).

The Board and the Finance Committee continue to work diligently to oversee the financial health of the Society. This includes monthly oversight of financial results, working to improve the financial results of events and introducing a multi-year donor initiative, among other things. The Board and the Finance Committee believe a sneak peek into 2017 will show a continuation of the strong financial performance over the last several years allowing the Society the ability to implement many items in the long range Strategic Plan.
