energy savings and environmental protection are today’s most important issues for the maritime market. becker marine systems’ wholesome approach to energy savings in all areas of their product range is in perfect alignment with these issues. the company faces its responsibility for sustainable and environmentally-friendly developments by continuously reducing the environmental footprint of its products.

becker’s well-known rudders and energy-saving devices (esds) are the guarantee for every ship owner of getting state-of-the-art products which meet the environmentally-friendly requirements of today and tomorrow. over 7,000 becker Rudders are in use around the globe and already more than 800 becker energy-saving devices have been sold – with 400 of them in operation today and an estimated reduction of more than 1,000,000 t co2 to the benefit of our environment.

both becker Rudders and becker esds are designed to save energy. a becker full spade Rudder would save approx. 2% compared to a standard semi spade rudder and a becker mewis duct® would save an average of 6.4% depending on the operational conditions. Recent tests of the becker twisted fin®, another becker esd, for panmax container ships (panmax) and ultra large container ships (ulcs) have shown energy savings of 2-3%.

max Kommorowski (right) and Ralf-thomas Rapp, both directors of lng Hybrid, strengthen the

bms team with their expertise.

as the technical director, max Kommorowski draws on 35 years of experience at shipyards and in the maritime industry. after his apprenticeship, as well as advanced training and work in the Repair and Rebuilding department at blohm + voss until 1990, management activities at other shipyards and ship suppliers followed.

as the commercial director at lng Hybrid, Ralf-thomas Rapp harks back to his 30 years of accumulated know-how in the maritime industry.

beginning at his father’s marine equipment business, its diversification into marine emergency equipment and the acquisition of a production plant for lifejackets soon followed. after being acquired by a financial investor and other partnership changes, the decision was not difficult for him to step down as managing director. both men are now pleased to have earned the trust at becker marine systems to be able to advance a pioneering new technology and establish it on the market.

in January 2014, the keel laying ceremony of the world’s first lng Hybrid barge took place in Komárno in slovakia. the delivery voyage will be starting on the danube in august 2014, taking the european system of rivers and canals northward. the final kilometres will be travelled across the north sea and River elbe to Hamburg. due to the restrictions on height and width on the inland waterways, final assembly and commissioning will take place in Hamburg.

the barge will be used to generate environ mentally -friendly energy to supply electricity to cruise ships during layovers at port. as a result, the cruise ships’ diesel engines can be powered down. the low-emission lng (“liquefied

natural gas”) fuel used on the barge for energy production will result in a significant reduction of harmful substances.

the lng Hybrid barge for the port of Hamburg is a prototype with more pioneering and innovative lng projects currently in the pipeline. in addition to the barge, the lng Hybrid team of becker marine systems is working hard on developing concepts for cargo ships and on several ferry

concepts employing the environmentally-friendly lng Hybrid drive approach. lng Hybrid’s key approach is reducing emissions for the benefit of our environment.

the united states environmental protection agency (us epa) has issued guidelines which require the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants. consequently, becker marine systems has developed a rudder system which is fully compliant with the latest environmental regulations and was granted a vessel general permit by the us epa. becker’s new grease-free rudder trunk has a special coating to protect the trunk and the shaft against corrosion caused by sea water. the special coating was developed to withstand the most severe operational conditions.

another component of the grease-free becker Rudder is the newly developed and water-lubricated becker Hp super neck bearing. a

difficult task for becker’s R&d team was the

development of a lubrication-free carrier bearing. for many years becker marine

systems has been working on

a high pressure polymer material allowing the highest radial and axial rudder forces. in addition, the bearing must be extremely resistant with virtually no wear and tear, zero maintenance and environmentally friendly without the use of grease. the material used is also employed in the aerospace industry.

the new becker Hp super neck bearing is designed in segments, allowing easy installation on newbuildings and refits and the bearing material is approved by all major classification societies. moreover, the maximum allowed surface pressure is much higher than the bronze bearing material normally used.

the number of becker mewis duct® orders for 57 k and 64 k bulk carries designed by the shanghai merchant ship design and Research institute (sdaRi) has climbed to a total of 57 due to the recent orders for the delivery of three becker mewis ducts®. the order was placed by greek owner a. m. nomikos for their 57 k dolphin class bulk carriers. the energy savings established in tank tests and in full scale have convinced a. m. nomikos, as well as many other owners of these types of vessels, to install becker mewis ducts® in order to achieve significant energy savings.

becker received an order from vancouver-based Jastram engineering ltd. to deliver becker Heracles flap Rudders for an offshore fisheries research vessel. the ship with a length of 55.0 m will be constructed at seaspan vancouver shipyard for the canadian coast guard and is designed to operate in the atlantic, pacific and arctic oceans. it is one of the first orders initiated by the canadian national shipbuilding programme. Jastram engineering and becker have agreed on cooperation in order to offer a package solution. Jastram will deliver the steering gear system and becker the flap rudders.

after equipping five polar-class (pc-6) container vessels built at Remontowa shipyard for Royal arctic line with becker schilling® Rudders, Keppel singmarine entrusted becker with another important order: specially strengthened becker flap Rudders for three shallow-water offshore vessels with Russian polar class arc-4 and arc-5. when completed by Keppel singmarine and Keppel nantong in 2015, these vessels will support offshore platforms in the northern part of the caspian sea, providing reliable year-round services for a Russian operator in the harshest of environments.

State visit: Delegation attends MARINTEKKing Harald of norway invited german president Joachim gauck and mrs. daniela schadt for a state visit to norway from 11th to 13th June 2014. the first two days were spent in oslo, with the third day of the visit in trondheim. crown prince Haakon accompanied president gauck and mrs. schadt to trondheim.

during the stay in trondheim a visit to maRinteK and ntnu (the norwegian university of science and technology) was arranged for the president. the aim was to focus on german and norwegian cooperation and activities.

maRinteK recognise becker marine systems as an important german contact for various research projects and for the use of their ship model tank test facilities. mr. Henning Kuhlmann, managing director of becker marine systems, was specially invited to this event to inform the president on our activities together with maRinteK.

the anchor Handling vessel Normand Hunter was built for aberdeen, scotland-based nomis shipping at the marystown shipyard in canada. during its now 35 years of faithful service, the vessel has undergone several name changes. it was launched as Normand Hunter in 1979 and later bore the names Acadian Mistral, DEA Hunter, VOS Hunter and Future One. the vessel is still in service today, safely handling anchors under the name Visal Sai Gon for vietnamese company vietnam salvage & Rescue. Her two becker flap Rudders with heel pintle connected to the nozzle (becker sa Rudders) have always provided her crew with reliable manoeuvrability.

as the world leader for manoeuvring and energy-saving devices, becker marine systems received the order to improve the propulsion efficiency of wallenius vessels Mignon and Manon. in these conversion projects, becker is replacing the vessels’ old Hamworthy schilling® rudder with a becker twisted streamlined bulb rudder. to achieve the optimised improvement in propulsion efficiency, becker is also installing a propeller fairing cap developed in combination with the new rudder bulb design. the perfectly matching bulb-fairing cap combination turns the rudder arrangement into a high-performance propulsion/manoeuvring package with excellent course keeping characteristics. it goes without saying that the propeller fairing hub cap can be designed and built for all propellers. becker was able to design its rudder in order to retain the existing rudder stock, rudder trunk and steering gear. consequently, the conversion time frame will be kept very short and conversion costs as low as possible. becker is proud to support its customers in these interesting conversion projects.
