The consequential amendments to the Convocation prizes are attached to the agenda (Attachment A). The Dean recommends that Faculty approve the Convocation, the UWA Graduates Association Prizes be renamed Convocation of UWA Graduates Prizes.

7. AMENDMENTS TO THE TAYLOR WOODINGS PRIZE IN MGMT3342 ENTREPRENEURSHIP –

F1368 Late last month, we were advised that Taylor Woodings has been taken over by FTI Consulting (refer to media statement http://taylorwoodings.com.au/Assets/Taylor-Woodings-AUS-press-release-FINAL-.pdf). As part of their sale contract, the name Taylor Woodings is not permitted to be used in the public arena/forum. Taylor Woodings Prize pledge expired last year and the 2012 award is the final prize. When the merger was completed, FTI Consulting wished to continue with the Taylor Woodings Prize renewal to be renamed FTI Consulting Prize and to increase the value to $1,000 per annum. The following amendments were agreed upon by FTI Consulting and UWA Business School:

change name of the prize to FTI Consulting Prize in MGMT3342 Entrepreneurship; renewal of prize funding for a period of five years, commencing in 2013; increase prize value to $1,000; the prize is to be awarded to the student with the highest mark in MGMT3342 Entrepreneurship;

and the prize is to be awarded by the relevant board. Recommendation by a selection committee is

no longer required as the prize will be awarded to the student with the highest mark rather than a group of students with the best business plan.

The prize amendments are attached to the agenda (Attachment B). The Dean recommends that Faculty approve the recommended changes to the prize and that the prize be renamed the FTI Consulting Prize in MGMT3342 Entrepreneurship.

PART 3 – ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION AND DECISION

8. NEW UNDERGRADUATE UNIT – MKTG1107 CONSUMERS AROUND THE WORLD – Ref. Fxxxx

Consumers Around the World is a proposed unattached unit to be offered as a Category A broadening unit for students enrolled in courses other than the Bachelor of Commerce, and as an elective for those enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce. It is designed to meet the objectives of broadening units and will specifically develop research, analysis and communication skills through an understanding of how cultural and socio-demographic diversity relate to a myriad of difference in consumption patterns in today’s increasingly global world. The unit provides students with an opportunity reflect on how their own experiences impact their consumption behaviour and how these experiences differ from others. There should be wide interest in this unit as it addresses interesting cultural and sub-cultural difference in consumption behaviour from a theoretical and practical view. Enrolment is expected to be approximately 200 students, and it is proposed to be offered from semester 1, 2015. The unit proposal is (Appendix I) The Dean suggests that Faculty Board recommend approval by Academic Council of the proposed Category A unattached broadening unit, Consumers Around the World.

TEACHING AND LEARNING REPORT June 2013

TEACHING AND LEARNING TEAM Eileen Thompson, Instructional Designer left the Business School in 2012. As a result of this, the Teaching and Learning area was reviewed and two new roles were created - Teaching and Learning Officer and Teaching and Learning Project Manager. Kaye Haddrill and Catherine Vogel were appointed in these roles respectively. Tundi Jeges will continue in her role as PASS Co-ordinator in 2013. COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP The Teaching and Learning (T&L) Committee membership structure has been amended to include both these roles. The Committee holds monthly meetings on the last Tuesday of the month and the notes of the meeting are available on the T&L section of the Business Schools’ website. All faculty members are welcome to attend T&L Committee meetings. The Committee has held three meetings to date for 2013. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all Committee members in 2013, including Elisa Birch, Leo Langa, Lydia Kilcullen, Gary Stockport, Fang Liu, Nick Letch, Paul Crompton, Paul Lloyd, Kaye Haddrill, Kirk David, Jacinta Kotula and Jenny Gamble. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of the professional staff members at these meetings. I would like to thank Catherine Vogel for her work as the Executive Officer for the Committee AACSB AND EQUIS In 2012 the programs reviewed to assess how well students are achieving the program learning outcomes were the MPA, MHRER and BCom majors in Accounting, Finance, Management and Human Resource Management. The reports are available on the website at http://www.business.uwa.edu.au/learning/assurance/program. In 2013 the programs being reviewed are the BCom majors in Marketing and double major in Economics, along with the Master of Marketing, MEc, Master of Business Information Management, MCom and MBA. It is critical that the outcomes from the reports are acted upon and that the strategies for improvement are implemented by relevant disciplines/program areas. The reports examine the program learning goals and assess evidence showing how students perform in relation to these goals. This is important for any business school and particularly in the new regulated environment in which all Higher Education Providers operate. The process established for assurance of learning and assessing student performance reviews has provided some important learning for us. Thanks to Lydia Kilcullen who has been working on mapping the AoL processes and looking at ways to improve and streamline what we currently do. For more details on assurance of learning including curriculum maps for all programs visit: http://www.business.uwa.edu.au/staff/teaching/assurance SCALING OF MARKS IN THE BACHELOR OF COMMERCE The scaling of marks in the BCom was raised as an issue in 2011 and presented to disciplines for discussion. A final decision about the scaling of marks in the Bachelor of Commerce was deferred pending a report from the Institutional Research Unit. The Teaching and Learning Committee has reopened the issue of scaling and intends to make a recommendation after the July meeting and forward this recommendation for discussion to the Full Faculty meeting on December 11. GRADING CHANGES TO THE MCom AND MPAcc The T&L Committee recommended to Faculty Board that the distribution of grades for the MCom and MPA degrees should be the same as the MBA. Units of 15 students or less would be exempt from this average measure. This recommendation was approved by Faculty Board.

EXISTING DISTRIBUTION OF MARKS ACROSS PG PROGRAMS Core units in the Master of Commerce, as well as all units in the Master of Professional Accounting, should have means falling within the range 63-68. The MBA, specialised masters courses and the specialisation units in the MCom should have means set at 68-72. PROPOSED DISTRIBUTION OF MARKS ACROSS PG PROGRAMS All units in the Master’s programs should have means falling within the range 68-74. It is expected that core units will have means falling in the lower end of the range and elective units in the upper end of the range. Units with small enrolments of 15 or less may have means outside the range. Students who do not participate in all assessment items but remain enrolled in the unit should be excluded when calculating the mean mark. IELTS RECOMMENDATION Due to the declining number of international students in the postgraduate programs at the School, it was recommended that the School make a change to the existing IELTS score. The School will retain the IELTS at 7.0 with a written component of no less than 6.5, however, if a prospective student meets the criteria and has a listening/speech band of no less than 6.0, that an interview could be conducted to make the decision of admission. This would initially be trialled and then revisited at a later date to review the effectiveness of the process. WORKSHOPS/PRESENTATIONS IN 2013 To date, in 2013 we have run the following workshops/presentations:

February 14 - Live, classroom simulation demonstrating intuitive response software - Andrew Patterson from Top Hat Monocle

March 1 – Training for new Business School tutors, - Kaye Haddrill March 15 - Assessment of Oral Communication Skills – Phil Hancock March 26 – Developing and Managing your Curriculum – Grady Venville, Dean of Coursework Studies May 15 - HBP teaching and learning developments - David Klindienst, Harvard Business Publishing

SELF AND PEER ASSESSMENT RESOURCE KIT (SPARKPLUS) The use of SPARKPLUS has expanded in 2013 with more units using it in the Business School as well as in Engineering. The new BPhil degree is also using SPARKLUS. The use of peer evaluation is one way of assessing team work skills. Marks for a group assignment can be awarded for the task (which is not assessing team work skills) and the process (which is measuring team work skills). SPARKPLUS can also be used to moderate the marks of various markers, assess the ability to exercise judgement and a number of other applications. We are developing additional resources for staff to assist in using SPARKPLUS. We are finalising a proposal for the management and funding of SPARKPLUS to be a central responsibility. The School has appointed Yvonne Button in 2013 for one day a week to assist and support staff in using SPARK in their units. For more information go to https://uwa.sparkplus.com.au/faq.php EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARDS The Business School’s Teaching Awards ceremony was held on April 18 and was well attended. The recipients for the 2013 awards are: Postgraduate Coursework, Leo Langa; Undergraduate Coursework-Large class, Andrew Williams; Undergraduate Coursework-Small class, Tim Daly, Adjunct Lecturer, Dee Roche; Early Career, Aleksandra Luksyte; Tutor (joint award) Amanda Tedjamulja and Natalie Drew with a Commendation being awarded to Leigh Smith;. There were two Service Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and these were awarded to Marjory Harvey and Michael Sutherland. At the April Teaching and Learning Committee meeting it was agreed that the submission guidelines for 2014 for the Business School teaching awards would be changed to make the process easier for staff. The changes include reducing the selection criteria to be addressed from between 2 and 5, to up to 2 only. The proposal also

C2

includes adopting a similar method to Arts with a formula that grades SPOT and SURF scores. Only staff that receive a grade higher than the specified grade are contacted to ask them to submit an application. Included in these changes was also that the School offer a teaching award based purely on the SPOT and SURF scores derived from a formula developed by the FAHSS. All that will be required is for staff to submit SPOT and SURF results to be considered for the award. In addition, we will continue with the trial of asking the nominator for Service Awards to be the one that has to make the submission. This submission would be up to 2 pages. The size of the Undergraduate small class award was changed to up to 150 students. This will bring it in line with the workload model. PEER ASSISTED STUDY SESSIONS (PASS) The program has continued in 2013 with five first year units being offered. I would like to thank Tundi Jeges and Kaye Haddrill for their roles and support in the PASS program. PEER REVIEW In 2008 the teaching and learning committee endorsed a process of providing opportunities for staff to seek peer review and feedback from those members of our staff who are previous winners of teaching awards or are widely recognised for the quality of their teaching. The process was started in 2009 and I would like to acknowledge the willingness of our experienced teachers to mentor early career teachers. I am aware of a few staff taking the opportunity to seek feedback about a more experienced teacher and I hope this scheme is utilised by early career teachers. Please contact me if you would like more information. UNIT INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (UIMS) The move to the Unit Information Management System (UIMS) has experienced a couple of challenges in 2013. Staff have provided feedback about some elements of the system:

Headings not clearly distinguishable from standard text Sections split across multiple pages making the document difficult to read Difficulty in depicting tabular information (e.g. assessment methods) The inability to add tables

This feedback has been forwarded to Kath Williams who is the current UIMS system administrator who will help address our recommendations for change The response from our students about UIMS has been positive. They found the system useful for being able to choose units in advance. TURNITIN Also as you prepare your unit outline a reminder that the school subscribes to the software detection device Turnitin. You need to contact the Help Desk if you wish to be registered to use Turnitin. The faculty passed a rule which allows the use of Turnitin and the rule is quoted in the unit template. For further information on Turnitin go to: http://www.turnitin.com/static/index.html TUTOR TRAINING PROGRAM We completed the tutor training workshop for Semester 1 on March 1 and we had 34 new tutors attend. The feedback was very positive from all participants. The role of our tutors is a very important part of the student experience at the Business School and I thank them for taking the time to attend the workshop. I would like to thank Leo Langa, Trish Todd and Candice Lamb for assisting with the facilitation of the four scenarios that many tutors will have to confront at some stage. I also want to thank Kaye Haddrill for running her first tutor training session in her new role in the school and for doing it so professionally. PHIL HANCOCK ASSOCIATE DEAN TEACHING & LEARNING

RESEARCH AND RESEARCH TRAINING REPORT June 2013

The following overview of the activities undertaken by the Associate Dean Research and the Business School Research Office over the course of the past 6 months is presented under the headings: Researcher support and development; initiatives and administration; and HDR. RESEARCHER SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT The research office provided support and feedback for applicants in the ARC Discovery, DECRA, and Future Fellowships in 2012. Budgetary support, reviews and technical support were provided for 12 Business school applications (and to a lesser extent, further externally submitted applications). The ADR provided academic peer reviews for almost all applications (8 ARC Discovery [including a DORA Fellowship application], 1 Future Fellowship, and 3 DECRA). The rejoinder period is currently open to current round Discovery applicants, and support and review processes are also extended by the Research Office for this process. Outcomes will be available later this year. The Research Office also provided support for an ARC Centre of Excellence Expressions of Interest. Centres of Excellence are a large scale, collaborative initiative with the potential to attract up to $28Million in ARC funds. The proposed ARC Centre of Excellence for Global Readiness is led by David Day and involves 22 institutional partners. Results of the first round will be available in July with a further, more detailed submission, due in August. Additional support via tailored workshops was provided on ARC schemes. An intensive three week grant writing workshop with the Law School and Social Sciences was arranged to provide information and advice on various schemes. This initiative went ahead due to positive feedback from a similar workshop held in January 2012. A total of 10 Business School early and mid-career researchers registered for this year’s workshop. An additional joint two day workshop will be held midyear (July, date tbc), the aim of which is to encourage people to prepare themes and project teams early for later grant rounds. In addition to these grant-specific initiatives, discussions are being held with the Information Services Faculty Liaison Officer regarding possible workshops/presentations around navigating information services and providing information on the relative value of a number of research tools. Provision of assistance and support, as well as communication of research opportunities is disseminated to researchers for a wide range of schemes throughout the year although the strong level of participation and complex nature of ARC applications renders it worthwhile developing tailored initiatives for those schemes. These events have been complemented with individual level support and encouragement. This has been most successful with early and mid-career researchers with new staff and those who are unfamiliar with the Australian research environment, particularly benefitting from guidance around local funding opportunities and advice around career development and the various ranking models popularly adopted. INITIATIVES AND ADMINISTRATION The Research Office has developed and overseen a number of events at the Business School which have been broadly undertaken for the purpose of acknowledging research effort and successes on the part of our staff and elevating the visibility of research within the culture of the Faculty. Events include:

‐ Staff orientation day

‐ HDR student orientation

‐ Research awards event for achievements in 2012

‐ First intake of the newly restructured DBA in 2013

DATA COLLECTION Over the past year the Faculty Research Office been able to consolidate and enhance our processes for the HERDC and ERA publications’ data collection. The centralisation of the process across the Faculty from administrative teams to the Research Office has delivered significant gains in efficiency and timing. The addition of a 0.5FTE Research Assistant position in February 2012 was the catalyst to the change in our approach, and publications for HERDC and ERA are now researched, sourced, and entered on an ongoing basis. New methods of researching publications have been introduced during the course of the year, including the setting-up of alerts from the Scopus database (the world’s largest abstract and citation database), which notify us when research for Business School authors goes to press. A further development has been the introduction of a customised collection-tool allowing our researchers to check the publications that the Research Office has on-file for them, and to add to or amend these records as necessary. It also allows us to collect non-HERDC publications from our authors—a development which holds the potential to alleviate at least some duplication of effort on the part of our researchers. These improvements were explicitly acknowledged in a letter of thanks from the University Research Assessment Unit (RAU), as an example of ‘best practice’ for data collection accuracy and efficiency BOARDS AND COMMITTEES The Business School Research Committee Following elections, the new Research Committee had its first meeting on 25 July 2012. The committee comprises: Peter Robertson (Chair), Nic Groenewold, Richard Heaney, Julie Lee, Sharon Parker, Brett Smith (Early Career Researcher representative), Jill Sweeney, Marvin Wee, and Stanley Yu (HDR representative). Kerrie Unsworth resigned from the Committee in early 2013 and was replaced by Gillian Yeo. The Dean spoke to workload issues for a need to develop the workload model to recognise 40:40:20 in workloads, address concerns about the “long tail” of research inactivity, and define levels of research activity for the PAR process. The Committee was therefore asked to consider a revised workload model - through consultation with Discipline groups - that achieved these objectives and is benchmarked according to best practices across Go8 universities. On 29th August 2012 the research committee sought feedback from discipline groups for changes in principle that would explicitly recognise different levels of research activity and provide a balance of service, teaching and research workloads in accordance with these different levels of research activity. It emphasised equitable loads that would allow us to be competitive in the hiring process and send appropriate signals in terms of research expectations. Feedback from Discipline groups was received from October through to February 2013. The ADR discussed in-principle models with the full Management Committee on 14 March. Following this consultation, a more concrete proposal was drafted and at the Research Committee meeting of 24 April a subcommittee was formed - with a representative from each Discipline group - to conduct modelling of the draft workload models using HERDC publications data. Following feedback from this modelling presented at the May meeting, the ADR is preparing to provide a refined model to be distributed for further consultation with Discipline groups. The Business School Regional Ethics Review Committee (RERC) The RERC membership remains unchanged in 2013 and comprises: Paul Gerrans, Chair; Mark Edwards; Ray Fells; Rob Lambert; Julie Lee; Michelle Roberts; Anu Rammohan; Steve McShane; and Christine Soo. After discussions with Research Services, we identified several unnecessary replications were identified in the ethics approval process and changes were implemented that resulted in a more streamlined process. Since the changes, the system has been working much more efficiently with no significant issues arising in the last 6 months. Frustratingly the hoped-for online ethics application procedure has still not materialised despite a further meeting with Research Services in November.

The Board of Higher Degrees by Research The HDR Board meets bi-annually and Board membership remains as Peter Robertson (Chair), Alan Dench (or nominee), Geoff Soutar, Sharon Parker, Richard Heaney, Jill Sweeney, Millicent Chang, Rob Lambert, and Sam Tang. Unfortunately the November and May meetings had to be postponed due to unavailability of key Board member(s). HIGHER DEGREES BY RESEARCH Doctor of Business Administration

A cohort of 19 students commenced the newly re-structured DBA program in February 2013. The intake consists of 18 males and 1 female (including 1 international student). Occupations include management, directorships, engineering (mining, water), accounting, academia, farming, an economist, project management, entrepreneur/company start up and others.

Significant interest continues to be shown in the DBA and an intake in 2014 is planned followed by biennial intakes. HDR Commencements 6 new PhD students have commenced thus far in 2013 in addition to the 19 DBAs. 1 Higher Degree by Research (Preliminary) student is scheduled to commence in Semester 2. The number of PhD commencements in Semester 2 is yet to be determined and depends on scholarships, funding etc. HDR Completions 3 PhD candidates have completed in 2013 thus far, and a further 13 are either under examination or have corrections in progress (including one DBA candidate who was examined for PhD). 3 DBA candidates are currently under examination SCHOLARSHIPS Only one Scholarship round has been completed in 2013 with the School successfully attracting one International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS). The midyear local round (APA/UPA) has just opened, with the main Local and International Scholarship (IPRS/SIRF) rounds later in 2013. Application numbers in the local rounds remain low with international scholarship application numbers steady with a noticeable increase in quality over the most recent couple of rounds. The five year tenure of the BHP Billiton Postgraduate Research Scholarship came to an end in 2012 with an announcement that further scholarships would not be on offer for the time being. HDR STUDENT SUPPORT AND EVENTS HDR Orientation and Morning Tea The Semester 1 HDR Student Orientation was held in April this year and for the first time involved a number of new DBA students as well as commencing PhD students. This was more by accident than design as commencing DBA students had already attended an Orientation/Briefing as part of their first coursework unit, however, some were aware of the PhD Orientation and were keen to attend. Despite the course differences, information relevant to both cohorts was presented and candidature pathways for both groups covered. The interaction between the two groups added a positive element to the proceedings, and both cohorts found the information helpful and attendance worthwhile. The Orientation was followed by a ‘Welcome’ morning tea. The regular Welcome morning teas, to socialise new students into the Business School and introduce them to students and staff, are always well attended by HDR students and both academic and professional staff.

D3

Student Forum Semester 1 Orientation was followed by a 30 minute Student Forum. This event was initiated by PhD students from the Management and Organisations Discipline keen to gauge the level of interest in greater cross-Discipline interaction among other HDR students. Those attending indicated a strong interest in research and study related events and social activities. Following the Forum a committee of representatives from each Discipline was formed, and social events including a morning tea, quiz sessions and regular Friday afternoon drinks have been organised. An afternoon soccer match involving both HDR students and staff has also been scheduled. The Committee is committed to arranging inclusive activities that will be attractive to students across the spectrum of cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Three Minute Thesis Competition The Three Minute Thesis competition is again scheduled for 2013 and this year includes Early Career Researchers (as part of the internal UWA Competition). The challenge will be to turn around the declining participation rates within the Business School (and also across UWA). PETER ROBERTSON ASSOCIATE DEAN RESEARCH AND RESEARCH TRAINING

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS REPORT

June 2013

The School’s internationalisation mission is to enable a mindset and activity unconstrained by geography, nation, race and culture. This is consistent with the School’s vision to become one of the most influential Business Schools in Australia

and Asia.

There are three planks to the School’s strategy to achieve the above mission: (a) Build a strong international reputation; (b) Enhance international research collaboration; (c) Embrace an international mindset and outlook across all activities in the Business School with guiding

principles of: Quality, Diversity, Engagement.

(developed in August 2010 by participants at School-wide strategy meeting) STAFF CHANGES

Ray Da Silva Rosa stepped down as Associate Dean of International Relations in November 2012. I would

like to thank Ray for the work that he has done in this area so far, and for being such a great help during the transition.

In January 2013 I took over as Associate Dean in an interim capacity while I am on sabbatical. I will be on-board properly from late July 2013.

Bev Partridge is back in the role of International Coordinator. Wade Jarvis will be taking on the new role of Deputy Associate Dean, International Relations. I would like to heartily acknowledge the work done by Bev Partridge, Lili Qiu, and members of the

International Committee. BUILD STRONG INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION

We are being courted by some of the best universities in the world. For example, Manchester Business

School, Leeds University and Bath University (UK), University of Tübingen (Germany), University of Strasbourg (France) amongst others, all want to engage with us at a deeper level than just Study Abroad exchanges. This is a fantastic acknowledgement of the work of the academics (in terms of our academic reputation), our teaching staff and tutors (in terms of our teaching quality) and our marketing team (in terms of getting our name out there).

Rhonda Flottmann and her team, notably Carene Wong and Quang Tao Ly, have been working hard to make our Ambassadorial Council chapters successful. We have a great list of members in WA, Singapore, UK and the US and a huge potential for both in-bound guidance from the Council as well as out-bound reputation. If you have any ideas for how you could use this resource please come and talk to myself or Rhonda.

One of our key strategies over the coming years will be to create meaningful relationships with a few universities. These will involve collaboration and connections across not only Study Abroad but double-degrees, team teaching, and research ties. I will be coming to discipline meetings to identify the best universities for you – who would you like to work with in both teaching and research?

ENHANCE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH COLLABORATION

The outcomes for the Early Researcher Fellowship were announced earlier this year. The Fellowship was

designed by Sharon Parker and put in place by the International Committee and enables “high potential” early career academics to come to UWA for a month or two. As Ray noted in the last Faculty Report,

the response to the first call was excellent – so good, in fact, that two offers were made and accepted. David Wagner from Singapore Management University and James Beck from University of Waterloo will both be coming during late winter/early Autumn.

We have had some individual successes (these are just the ones I am aware of): o Alex Luksyte was successful in applying for the Australia-China Young Researchers’ Exchange Program

and had a successful trip to China o Rod Tyers, Peter Robertson and others held a very successful workshop on economics in China. o I’m sure there are other successes also.

Please note the funding opportunities for research collaboration through WUN/RCA. They are very keen

for us to try and apply for this funding.

How can we (the International Committee/the School) help you to collaborate internationally? I’d like to hear your ideas. o Papers that have authors from more than one country are more likely to be cited than papers with authors

from only one country (apparently). EMBRACE AN INTERNATIONAL MINDSET

Teaching for diversity and to diversity

o CATL are running talks in June on internationalising the curriculum o We are looking at potentially arranging workshops on strategies for teaching diverse groups of

students

Double-degrees o A proposal for funding from the EU (EU-AU scheme) was put together by Ray Da Silva Rosa on

UWA’s behalf. The proposal is for a Masters in International Management that would receive funding from the EU. Students would do one year at their home university in Europe (University of Strasbourg (France), Ca’ Foscari (Venice), or Corvinus University (Budapest)) and a year at either UWA or UAdelaide; they would then receive a degree from both universities. This has been signed off and we are now awaiting news whether or not we have been successful in obtaining the EU funding (due to find out in August).

o We are talking with the University of Tübingen (Germany) to set up an equivalent Masters in International Management double-degree.

o Potentials with Chinese and Indonesian universities – although these are in earlier stages of development.

Study abroad exchange agreements done so far this year o Bath University – undergraduate exchange. This agreement has been approved by the Business

School (at all levels) and is now awaiting final sign off by the VC o Coppead Graduate School – MBA exchange. This agreement has been approved by the Business

School (at all levels) and is now awaiting final sign off by the VC o UCLA – students will study 2 units at UCLA and gain credit of 12 points into UWA bachelor.

85 UWA applications were received for the UCLA Study Abroad Program with 25 spots available.

The breakdown is: o Arts: 19 received, 6 to be allocated o Business: 21 received, 6 to be allocated o Science: 45 received, 13 to be allocated

E2

Further information about some scholarships and assisted funding:

o The Perth USAsia Centre will be offering three scholarships to UWA students at $4500 each, which will be awarded on the basis of equity and academic merit.

o Participants will be eligible to apply for a short term study abroad scholarship. Applications have been extended to 31 May.

o Participants will be eligible to apply for an OS-HELP Loan to the maximum value of $4000 through the Financial Aid Office.

University of Manchester (Manchester Business School) – An exchange agreement is being set up at the University level with University of Manchester and, for us, MBS in particular.

DEAN’S REPORT June 2013

1. EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH FOR AUSTRALIA 2012 [ERA 2012] The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) is an Australian government initiative which aims to “identify and promote excellence across the full spectrum of research activity, including both discovery and applied research, within Australian higher education institutions”. One of the objectives of the ERA initiative is to provide a national stocktake of discipline-level areas of research strength and where there are opportunities for development in Australian higher education institutions. The Business School’s publications are predominantly in two broad Fields of Research (FoR), referred to as the two-digit level FoRs – FoR14 – Economics and FoR 15 – Commerce, Management, Tourism and Services. In both FoRs, we were rated at 4 or at “above world standard”. Within each broad Field of Research, there are particular specialised areas of research (referred to as the four-digit FoRs). To be assessed at these specialised areas, we must have at least 50 publications that meet the criteria for inclusion. The School had sufficient numbers of papers to meet the requirement for assessment at several of these four-digit level; Universities that do not meet the minimum requirement would typically pool these publications for inclusion in a wider FoR. For one of these specialised areas, FoR 1503 Business and Management, we received the top rating of ‘5’ or “well above world standard”. This rating was given to five of the Go8 Universities. Applied Economics was rated at 4, a rating that places the School in a similar ranking to other Go8 universities. Other areas, namely accounting, finance and marketing, were rated “at world standard”, with no area being rated below world standard. This is an excellent outcome for the School. The next ERA assessment is expected to be done in 2015. 2. The commencing loads for 2012 and 2013 are shown in Table 2. The data, obtained from the University Executive Information System, suggest that commencement loads have decreased this year, relative to last year. The reason for this seems unclear given our observation that class sizes have in fact increased this year.

A Bachelor of Commerce student is required to complete a Business major as their ‘degree specific major’. They can also choose a second major offered in the other degrees. Similarly, students from other degrees can complete a Business major as their second major. Table 3 summarises the data as of 6 May 2013 and also provides data on the number of students from other degrees who have chosen to complete our majors. For example, amongst students who are completing the BA, 61 have chosen marketing as their second major, and 45 have chosen management. Amongst those completing the BSc, 148 have chosen Finance, 77 Economics, and 141 Management as their second majors.

Enrolments in First Year units – 2013 and 2012 2013 is still a transition year for New Courses 2012 as some units have moved levels. A number of units that could be taken by students in their second year have now been moved as Level 3 units, available only in their third year. For these units, enrolments have declined slightly this year. Some units, however, have moved from being level 3units to Level 2 units, and these units have increased enrolments this year as both second and third year students are taking them. Another set of data that provide an indication of the impact of New Courses are data on enrolments in first year units offered by the School. The Semester 1 load for 2013 and 2012 is given in Table 5 below. Last year, we reported that the total 2012 enrolments in Level 1 units were higher by more than 18% relative to 2011. Again in 2013, we see a significant increase (about 20%) in Level 1 enrolments relative to 2012.

2013 POSTGRADUATE ADMISSIONS

Data on commencing students for 2012 and 2013 in our postgraduate courses as of 1 March are given in Table 6. Overall, there is a slight increase in commencements relative to 2012. International enrolments remain close to its 2012 levels, but have dropped significantly from a peak in 2011. The School increased its English language requirements for incoming 2012 international students, and this is a factor that has clearly impacted on the international intake. On the positive side, the Associate Dean of T&L has indicated that change has increased noticeably the overall quality of our student body.
