WHAT IS ISLAMOPHOBIA?

Defining Phobia

“An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something”

Therefore Islamophobia is the extreme/irrational fear of Islam and Muslims.

What is Islam?

• Islam is the last revealed religion. Its faith according to the Qur’an, Sunnah and Hadith emphasizes on the belief of Allah the almighty, the judgment day, the angels, Allah’s prophets and his Holly Book the Qur’an.

• What are the main sources of Islam?• The Quran• Sunnah and Hadith

• Fear of Islam• Unreasonable fear, hatred or

hostility directed against Muslims

• Attacks on Muslims• Attacks on Islam that appear

to be provocative and that goes beyond normal

• Stereotypical representations• Distortions of beliefs,

practices, or history to show “wickedness” of the religion or its adherents.

ORIGINS OF THE TERM

• The term dates back to the late 1980s• First printed in February 1991 in the US• Came into common usage after

the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States

• New terminology, but not a new concept – Is recognisably similar to ‘Xenophobia’ and ‘Europhobia’

ISLAM: RELIGION OF PEACE

• Islam means submission to Allah the Almighty• “Salam” means “Peace" • “Salam” is one of the Attributes of Allah• Islam is a way of life– How you conduct yourself at work– How you treat family and friends– The way you do business

REASONS ISLAMOPHOBIA INCREASED?

• Fear• Ignorance• Geo-political climate

THE IMPACT OF ISLAMOPHOBIA?

• Increase in hostility towards Muslims. – E.g verbal abuse, harassment and aggression

• Anti Muslim groups increased their activities– British National Party formed an alliance with Sikh and

Hindu extremists against Muslims.

– European groups such as Neo-Nazi.

• Government restrictions on Muslim travellers– Random checks in Airports “Not so random”

– Hard to obtain a Visa

HOW TO REDUCE ISLAMOPHOBIA ?

• Stress on cultural respect• Removal of fear and intolerance• Come to terms with ethnic difference• Censor the press so that religion and

nationality cannot be disclosed

• Politically mend relations between the west and the Islamic world

• Educate people about Islam to increase their awareness

WHAT SHOULD THE MEDIA DO?

• Bring in Muslim recognized scholars

• Stop treating Islam and Muslims as a homogenous group (Same Group)

• Provide public discussion e.g BBC- is there any evidence of God?

• Influences debates and opinions
