Address by Executive DirectorDear Educators, NE and CCE practitioners and Partners, Thank you for making S’pore Discovery Centre (SDC) your partner of choice for National Education (NE) and for your continued support of our efforts in sharing our Singapore Story and inspiring everyone to contribute to the future. Since our establishment as an NE centre in 1996, it has been an exciting and fulfilling 20 years. SDC has been promoting NE messages to students and Singaporeans through special exhibitions and a myriad of school and outreach programmes, which are regularly updated to meet the changing needs of MOE and the school community. We wish to thank everyone for their strong support of our year-long SDC20 calendar of events, which included special exhibitions and school programmes, Singapore Stories Film Gala, YOUTHphoria to the record breaking Youth Entrepreneurs Competition (YEC) which recently garnered more than $22,000 for charities. Your participation has made SDC20’s celebrations both special and memorable!

2017 will mark the 75th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore and 50 years of National Service (NS), hence, these key themes will be incorporated into the relevant programmes that we offer. Some NE Commemorative Days’ highlights will include the Total Defence Day (TDD) 2017 exhibition, the “TD - Game On!” school programmes which will be supported by new NE partners besides Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and TDD P6 Cohort activity; International Friendship Day (IFD) exhibition with learning stations that will focus on globalisation as well as ASEAN. For the Racial Harmony Day (RHD) and National Day (ND) programmes, students will be invited to join us to celebrate our Singapore Spirit. New school and outreach programmes as well as on-line educational resources will be rolled out and these aim to complement the latest changes in the MOE curriculum. More programmes will also be made available for NE ambassadors and educators.

2017 will be the 20th year since NE was first launched in all schools in May 1997, which aimed to develop national cohesion and the instinct for survival and confidence in the future. SDC as an NE centre will continue to lend focus on the latest government and MOE initiatives through our wide offerings, and SGSecure initiatives will also be incorporated to remind our students on the importance of staying vigilant and standing united in our fight against terrorism. The hallmark of our programmes has been the experiential learning and we will continue to support MOE’s focus on “Student-Centric, Values Driven” education and 21st century competencies. We will provide an authentic learning environment for students to develop an entrepreneurial spirit and be SG Future ready in order to face new challenges and seize opportunities.

As part of our school engagement efforts, we look forward to support our school’s NE events and projects such as CCA-related activities, annual camps, staff retreats, NE training for non-teaching groups, Parent Volunteers Group, ND Observance, Teachers’ Day, competitions and teambuilding for merging schools, etc. We will also provide opportunities for student and teacher attachments as well as collaboration projects to showcase students’ talents and for them to share their NE learning experiences.

We strive to serve you better and welcome your valuable feedback, especially as we embark on our redevelopment plans in the near future. We hope that you will consider SDC to be your NE partner of choice and look forward to your continued participation in our programmes as we work together to enrich your students’ and teachers’ learning experience.

Best wishes and warmest regards,

Lowrence ChuaExecutive DirectorSingapore Discovery Centre Limited

our TotalDefencestrategy

is DEFENCE NECESSARY Having lived through peaceful times since World War 2, we may take our security for granted and it is hard to imagine that a major crisis can happen in Singapore. The idea of defence may even seem unnecessary to some.

Here are some common arguments for and against defence. What is your take? Can you think of more reasons why we should, or should not invest in defence?

NO COUNTRY NEEDS DEFENCE POLICES IN THE GLOBALISED WORLD.

With globalisation of trade, the economies of countries in the world are inter-connected. We stand to lose economically if there are major wars.

There is greater international co-operation among nations, greater respect for international law and support for diplomacy. Potential conflicts can be resolved through diplomatic rather than military means.

Defence is costly. The funds should be used for social good or development.

YES, EVERY COUNTRY SHOULD HAVEDEFENCE POLICIES.

Despite the fact that the world is more connected than before, there are still many armed conflicts around the world. The causes of these conflicts are often complex and require more than diplomatic effort and goodwill to resolve. National interests are often given top priority vis-à-vis global interests.

The potential threats that a country may face are more than direct military aggression. They could include economic, environmental or health threatsfor instance.

The potential cost of not investing defence and preparing for crises when they take place will be high.

IN THE AGE OF GLOBALISATION?

When you think about defence, what is the first image that comes to mind?

Many would think of military forces. But a nation’s defence is more than its armed forces. Total Defence involves every Singaporean to play a part, individually and collectively. A strong, secure and cohesive nation that is prepared and ready to deal with any crisis.

why “TOTAL”?The idea of “Total Defence” assumes that danger or crises may hit and impact

Singapore in more than one aspect. Having a co-ordinated response and plan to deal with any major crises that may take place will help to ensure that we have a higher

chance of survival, especially since Singapore is a small country.

The word “Total” also harks back to the concept of total war, where even civilians, and civilian infrastructure and resources are considered military targets, and the usual rules of

war no longer apply.

Youth Entrepreneurs Competition (YEC)Duration:Apr – Jun/Jul Finals will be held in Jun/Jul (Tentative)

Recommended no. of Participants:Min. 4 members in a teamMax. 5 members in a teamNo restriction to the number of teams sent by a school. One student should only be part of one team only.

Learning Objectives:Promote social entrepreneurship and community leadership development among youths in Singapore.

Have your students ever had a great business idea that they always wanted to try to put into action? Unlike competitions that focus on the conceptual aspect of entrepreneurship, YEC allows shortlisted teams to actually come up with the products they have in mind and sell them for real!

Shortlisted teams will get to hear from actual entrepreneurs and get some tips on how to kick-start their small business. Each team will be given seed funding to execute a marketing campaign, produce their products and sell them at a booth at the YEC Finals here at SDC.

More than just a business competition for aspiring young entrepreneurs, the competition also provides a platform for youth to reconnect with society and encourages them to use their creativity and media-savvy to make a difference to the community. All sales proceeds will go to Singapore Discovery Centre’s adopted charity and a charity selected by the respective teams.

I learnt how to become a better problem solver. I also learnt about theimportanceofteamworkandfeasibility.

- Student, Anglican High School

On behalf of the students, I wouldliketocongratulateyouon the resounding success of the competition. Indeed, the students have had an enriching experiencetakingpartinthecompetition, despite not winning anything. Nonetheless, they managed to raise a substantial amount of funds to support the relevant social causes. Onceagain, thanksagainfororganising this year’s YEC and welookforwardtothenext.
