5. “We need you to be a member!”
“What organization am I representing?”
• People join organizations they perceive as worthwhile.
• They want to know that their contribution and membership will make a difference.
• They also join an organization that promotes a particular cause or are active in particular areas.
“I have an answer for that!”
• Remember, too, that people can infer messages from your organization’s title and those involved.
• To counter incorrect assumptions, be prepared to respond to questions regarding your organization’s successes and failures, its mission, and characteristics that distinguish your organization from others doing similar work.
• The more clearly you understand your organization’s image, the better able you will be to stress the positives, correct misperceptions, and target the people who would feel comfortable affiliating with your organization.
“You are invited!”• One way to make your image
more welcoming to new members is to make our ISAE visible throughout your building. Example: Use a public bulletin board to promote news about ISAE, a website to share upcoming events, or wear your ISAE/NCAE gear.
• Don’t forget… to decorate your space with photographs and include a pocket for flyers on how new members can get involved!
“Attention Staff, there will be an ISAE new member meeting at 4:00 p.m. for those interested.”
• Making announcements at school, educational sessions, meetings, and social gatherings
within your school• Posting new member recruitment posters on
appropriate Web sites or bulletin boards• Making personal appearances to staff
members asking for them to join• Giving slide shows and presentations about
ISAE/NCAE• Staffing booths and exhibits at special events
“We need you to be a member!”Motivations for Joining:
• Feel needed. • Give back to the
profession• Share skills• Have a change of pace.• Get to know my peers
across my district, state, and nation
• Help someone. • Make new friends• Explore a career
• Be an advocate• Donate time• Fulfill a mandate or
requirement• Do something outside of
oneself• Be an advocate for
children.• Learn a new skill• Act on a passion
In evaluating your recruitment message, ask yourself these questions:
• Does the message honor the new member?
• Is the message tailored to a target audience?
• Does my invitation describe the image of ISAE?
