We can hardly claim an ex- cuse that weve not had me to create anything this year, can we?...since weve all been cooped up at home! This means that Im really looking forward to seeing the wonderful things you all have been doing. Were opening it up, this year, so that you may enter as many as FIVE pieces, rather than the usual three. (Space allowing, that is.) So I expect a really big show!In the Execuve Commiee meengs, we connue to talk about how we can stay a vibrant, growing organizaon in the 21 st century. We MUST have ways of making more money so we can pay our bills without dipping into the endowment fund. It would seem that this means, for one thing, to sell our art online. While the Commiee is beginning to work with someone who can make that an easy possibility on a website, we also know that we need a Board of Directors, most of whom can make substanal contribuons in ways we cannot. To that end, I am asking ALL OF OUR MEMBERS to comb through your personal acquaint- ances; and if you know someone whom we may invite to be on a board of directors, please ask them to contact us or give us their name so we can iniate a conversaon. We need someone with an abundance of iniave and love for the arts who can really work with us and for us. As a non-profit organizaon, there are grants we can get, but many of the avenues of obtaining money seem to require that we have a Board, and our Execuve Commiee is not exactly that. Please dont assume that otherswill do this; the responsibility is borne by all of us. Maybe you know someone from your church, or your place of business, or your banker or stockbroker. Member Newsletter September, 2020

Notes from “the Chair” Can you believe it’s time for our annual [October] Kansas show? We can hardly claim an ex-

cuse that we’ve not had time to create anything this year, can we?...since we’ve all been

cooped up at home!

This means that I’m really looking forward to seeing the wonderful things you all have been

doing. We’re opening it up, this year, so that you may enter as many as FIVE pieces, rather

than the usual three. (Space allowing, that is.) So I expect a “really big show!”

In the Executive Committee meetings, we continue to talk about how we can stay a vibrant,

growing organization in the 21st century. We MUST have ways of making more money so we can pay our bills without

dipping into the endowment fund. It would seem that this means, for

one thing, to sell our art online. While the Committee is beginning to

work with someone who can make that an easy possibility on a website,

we also know that we need a Board of Directors, most of whom can

make substantial contributions in ways we cannot. To that end, I am

asking ALL OF OUR MEMBERS to comb through your personal acquaint-

ances; and if you know someone whom we may invite to be on a board

of directors, please ask them to contact us or give us their name so we

can initiate a conversation. We need someone with an abundance of

initiative and love for the arts who can really work with us and for us. As

a non-profit organization, there are grants we can get, but many of the

avenues of obtaining money seem to require that we have a “Board,”

and our Executive Committee is not exactly that.

Please don’t assume that “others” will do this; the responsibility is borne

by all of us. Maybe you know someone from your church, or your place

of business, or your banker or stockbroker. Mentally scour your social

network, and let us hear from you soon!

Happy Autumn!

Dorethy

GALLERY STAFFING Thanks for all the staffing that has occurred through August and September. While we haven’t been able to fill all the time slots, there have been some staffers willing to fill in half days and that has helped a lot. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE HUB NOW HAS THE KEY AND THEY CLOSE AT 5:00 PM, so it is im-portant that you close the gallery and return the key before they leave. A reminder that if you have a member login you can go to our website and access the staffing calendar. It is private information only available to members. It gives the calendar and times that persons will be staffing and their phone number. This is most helpful if you find you need to trade your staffing time. We thank Phyllis Cory – [email protected], 785-806-3626 for keeping the gallery staffed in these uncer-tain times. If you can help out, please contact Phyllis. We are all in this together!

What’s happening — or not

The next show at the Gallery will be the annual Kansas Show with entry day September 27, 2-4 pm. The full prospectus is attached. The show is open to all Kansas artists whether or not they are members of TAG — so tell your friends! This is a juried show with $650 total prize money. The juror is Barbara Waterman Peters. Artwork must

• have a Kansas theme.

• be original work not produced in a class or workshop or shown previously at TAG.

• have a proper hanging mechanism. If you are unable to bring your entry on September 27, you may leave it at the gallery any time during the previous week. Make sure that you have read the prospectus carefully and adhered to all the guidelines. Failure to follow the guidelines could result in your artwork not being accepted for the show. Attach your entry form to your artwork along with your entry fee.

What you can do from the safety of home to support your Topeka Art Guild

• Follow the TAG Facebook page – and more than that, share the posts on your own

timeline and invite your friends to follow.

• Submit information about your accomplish-ments and share news of art opportunities to be included in this monthly newsletter.

• Continue to create new art and enter Guild shows.

• Invite your artist friends to join the Guild.

Highlights of the September 8, 2020 Executive Committee Meeting

With the stock market strong, the income from the

Guild’s investments came up a bit in August. But since gallery sales were only $189, money had to be withdrawn to cover expenses.

The transition to a new website is going slowly so the current one will be up until a new website can be developed.

Future Exec. Comm. meetings will be held in per-son and on Zoom to include those who are unable to come to the gallery.

Congratulations to these artists who sold

work at the gallery recently: Dorethy

Hancock, Brenda Meiers and Johanna Hanks.

Total art sales for August were $189.

Entering art in shows has become more

challenging in recent months. The lower-

ing or eliminating of entry fees has been

both a blessing and a challenge. These

shows are bringing in 500 or 600 entries,

and the virtual nature can sometimes at-

tract artists from long distances. Yet many

galleries are struggling to keep going.

We congratulate our fellow artists whose artwork was chosen by these shows and galleries:

Diane Lawrence, Naomi Cashman, Kris Luber, Leann Kilmer, Lila Bartel, Kathy Menzie, Ruth Powers and Bernadette

Robbins have displayed their work in recent group shows at Southwind Gallery. Kathy Menzie was featured artist at

Fire Me Up Ceramics in NOTO throughout August.

NOTO Arts Center Morris Gallery: Kris Luber, Naomi Cashman — and featured in the recently released NOTO

2017commemorative art book: Phyllis Cory, Kathleen Cobb, Connie English, Fred Hsia, Bernadette Robbins, Kris

Luber.

Visions of the Flint Hills at Buttonwood ArtSpace in Kansas City: Naomi Cashman, Fred Hsai, Diane Lawrence,

Kris Luber

Aaron Douglas virtual Art Fair: Marie Plinsky

Currently: Kathy Pflaum at NexLynx; Bernadette Robbins at Classic Bean Fairlawn Plaza; Connie English at Crea-

tions of Hope; Dorethy Hancock at Dr. Connie Lang’s office in east Topeka and the Bank Barbershop downtown.

Kris Luber at Modella Gallery, Stillwater, Oklahoma, Webster Arts in St. Louis and Fine Line Creative Arts Center in

St. Charles, Illinois. Naomi Cashman at Landmark Bank in Lawrence.

Please let us know where you have shown your work recently!

A note from Naomi Cashman — Landmark Bank in Lawrence has an exhibit of my paintings in their spacious lobby. After the announcement went out to the public, the bank lobby closed to all visits except business appointments. They have agreed to let me schedule interested folks before my artwork comes down on September 25. Please click on the link provid-ed to sign up if you wish to see the exhibit. I will be there to greet you. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0A48ADAC29A6FA7-naomi or contact me to help walk you through the sign-up process.
