Hampton Hall

Community Foundation (HHCF)

Hampton Hall Community Foundation was established in late

2008 as a private community charitable organization helping

worthy causes in the Low Country. Our 2009 activities

included supporting Special Olympics, Veterans Week and the

upcoming Bluffton Self Help Toys and Food drive. For our

first year, much was accomplished.

The Foundation started off small, both with the number of

people involved and the programs pursued. Our involvement

in charitable giving has proven to be extremely rewarding to

those involved and has enhanced the reputation of our

community in the Bluffton area.

We believe it is time to expand our organization and grow our

activities. The first step is to put together a Board that

represents a broader cross section of Hampton Hall residents.

We plan to have a six to eight person Board made up of

golfers and non golfers, men and women, and any other

interested parties who want to plan and help worthy causes

while representing the Hampton Hall community.

Are you interested in joining this community-wide

organization? If you are, please call Kendahl Mills at

815-8730 and have her put your name on the list of interested

Hampton Hall Members.

Help us help those in need. Sign up today. Thanks.

Friday Morning Men’s Group (FMMG) November 13 Discussion

The Friday morning of November 13 turned out to be good luck for the FMMG. Dan

Campbell, Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, joined us for a review of the

USCB program. From time to time, we all see an article or ad in the local newspaper about

Osher and we probably all say we want to know more about it. Now 12 Hampton Haller’s do

and we hope you will know more after you read the meeting’s summary below.

The first thing Dan said was the Institute’s name was a mouthful to say, so they have

nicknamed it ―OLLI‖. OLLI was started several years ago by Bernard Osher who had a vision

to provide a stimulating program for older learners. It has been in the Lowcountry for 10 years

and has seen a rapid growth the last few years.

They offer over 400 courses per year at their 4 teaching sites. These sites are at USCB,

Beaufort, USCB, Bluffton, Pineland Station on Hilton Head and Sgt. Jasper Park in

Hardeeville. The courses range from 6 weeks long to a single session and cover a wide range

of subjects. Here’s a listing of general areas offered this fall in our local community.

Art & Culture Business Finance Community Issues

Computers Ecology Gardening

Government Health & Medicine History

International Legal Matters Literature & Film

Music Personal Growth Philosophy

Religion Science Social Studies

Social Sciences Sports Travel

Writing

Clearly, there is something for everybody and Lowcountry residents are utilizing it as there are

over 10,000 enrollments per year. The instructors are all volunteers, some are former

educators while others are experienced practitioners in their field of expertise. They fill a very

important need as there is no state funding available for continuing education, referring to their

volunteer work as a ―Labor of Love‖.

The cost to partake in OLLI is unbelievably low. For $35/year, you become a Member of

OLLI. There are 1560 members currently. Once you become a member, for $85 per term, you

can enroll in as many courses as you want. Dan’s only caution was to sign up quickly for a

class because class sizes are limited by the room size.

All 12 Hampton Hall members give this program a ―Thumbs Up‖ rating. If you would like to

receive a Curriculum Guide for the Spring Semester, send Dan an e-mail with your name and

address. Dan’s e-mail is [email protected]. It would be good to mention Hampton Hall

in your e-mail so he knows his message got out to our Community.

December Fitness Tip Bonnie Price, Fitness Instructor

Busting the Top Five Excuses to

Overindulging During the Holidays

Excuse#1- The food looks and tastes so good! How can I resist?

It’s true- there will be plenty of terrific foods. But will you feel

good after you eat them? Was it really worth the taste? Could you

have received the same pleasure with a smaller amount?

Excuse #2- It’s a special occasion and it only comes once a year.

The holidays only come once a year but the parties, events, and

gifts of food never seem to end! Stop and decide which ones are

really worth the splurge. When it’s time for a splurge, bank

calories from earlier in the day.

Excuse #3- The hostess will be offended.

Just because everyone is eating does not mean that you have to eat

everything too. Choosing smaller portions shouldn’t offend

anyone. Remember ―if you half it you can have it‖ And,

sometimes just say no!

Excuse #4 – I should offer desserts to the company in my home.

Keeping your favorite dessert around at home usually spells

trouble. When treats are in the house, more of the dessert usually

ends up in you rather than your guests. Therefore, keep some low

calorie alternatives on hand.

Excuse #5- I will get back to my healthy eating plan tomorrow.

This thinking is okay, as long as it is realistic. Make sure an

occasional splurge does NOT become a repeated excuse (or turn

into ―next week‖ or ―next month‖).

Plan a system of attack . For example, bring a low calorie

appetizer to the office party, don’t go shopping on an empty

Stomach, use healthier substitutions for holiday cooking, burn

extra calories in a longer than usual exercise session. Some studies

show that adding 10 more minutes of intense exercise to your

usual workout can stave off holiday weight gain, and get 7-8 hours

of sleep nightly.

Happy Holidays!

Calling All Non-Aerobic Participants.

We Want You!

If you have never participated in an aerobics class at Hampton Hall within the

past year, then you should come and check us out. For one week during the month of December, you will be able to attend classes at no charge. Don’t wait

until the beginning of the year. Try it now! For additional information or to speak with

a fitness instructor, please call 843-815-8740!

TENNIS TALK by Rich Swartzwelder

Tennis is alive and well in Hampton Hall with a wonderful year of growth for the

tennis program. A tennis committee was instituted that gave structure and voice to the

tennis community. The number of tennis teams grew impressively from one in 2008 to seven in

2009. This was not only senior teams, but several adult teams. We had several tennis mixers

and the very successful 1st annual Ladies’ Member ~ Guest Tournament. The courts were re-done

in April and will be top dressed very soon. All tennis equipment is now housed in a shed and the

courts are being raked every morning. A tennis information board, instructional signs and a ball

machine are now in place. Soon to come are bleachers, another water fountain, and rear gates. This was all possible by our

General Manager, Mary Claire Gaze and her tremendous support of the tennis program.

Yes, what you read above is true. We now have an excellent ball machine housed in the tennis shed. It can be plugged into

an electrical outlet under the water fountain by court two. A safety tip: don’t stand in front of the ball machine. The ma-

chine is available to anyone. Please contact Brett Robertson our tennis pro at 843-816-2033 for operating instructions.

Fall Tennis Team Update:

The Men’s 3.0 Interclub Team is 1 and 1. The USTA 3.5 Men’s Super Senior Team finished at 4 and 3. The Ladies’

Interclub Joint Team with Colleton River finished in 1st place at 9 and 1. The Ladies’ USTA 5.5 combo team finished in

2nd place.

The men play every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 am. Just show up and play. The ladies sign up to play on

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 am. Please call Connie Dugan at 843-422-0752 to be put on the e-mail roster.

Mark your calendar for the annual tennis meeting on Thursday, December 10 from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm in the private

dining room of the Community Clubhouse. A new Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will be put in place. Anyone

interested in the tennis program please plan on attending.

See you on the courts.

Principles Behind the Rules of Golf By Dick Titus

Example Golf Situation: There are several small pebbles, loose sand and leaves lying on your line of putt. To speed up play,

you remove a few pebbles with your club, and then use a towel to remove some sand and the leaves. Your playing partner indi-

cates that you have incurred a penalty by using your club and towel to clear the loose impediments from your line of putt. In

this case the playing partner is wrong and you have incurred no penalty. Rule 16-1a (i) does not stipulate how loose impedi-

ments on the line of putt must or can be removed. The specific Rules for the putting green are different than other areas of the

course because the putting green is such a special area.

The putting green consists of all the ground of the hole being played that is specially prepared for putting or ground that has

been declared by the Committee to be the putting green (such as a temporary green). The putting green is treated differently

from other areas of the course in a number of ways: balls may be lifted from the putting green and cleaned (Rule 16-1b), old

hole plugs and damage caused by the impact of golf balls may be repaired, even if doing so improves the player’s line of putt

(Rule 16-1c), sand and loose soil are considered loose impediments, when they lie on the putting green (Definition of "Loose

Impediments") and may by removed.

Ball marks on the putting green may be repaired, whether the ball lies on or off the putting green. All other damage, including

spike marks, is not allowed to be repaired. Additionally, the player is prohibited from testing the putting green by roughening

the surface or rolling a ball (Rule 16-1d).

The line of putt is the line that the player wishes his ball to take after a stroke on the putting green. The line of putt includes a

reasonable distance on either side of the intended line, but it does not extend beyond the hole. Your line of putt is normally

considered sacred and must not be touched. There are, however, 7 circumstances listed in Rule 16-1a that do allow you to touch

this line. They are:

1. Sand and loose soil are loose impediments, only when they are on the putting green and may be removed, provided

you do not press anything down.

2. You may place the club in front of the ball, when addressing the ball, provided you do not press anything down.

3. When measuring while proceeding under a Rule (for example, when measuring to determine who is farther from the

hole).

4. When you mark and lift a ball from the putting green.

5. When you press down a ball-marker.

6. When repairing old hole plugs or ball marks on the putting green.

7. When removing movable obstructions, such as a piece of paper or a soda can.

Finally, a player must not make a stroke on the putting green while standing astride, or with either foot touching the line of putt,

or an extension of that line behind the ball, except when to avoid standing on another player’s line.

Toys for Tots Hampton Hall is teaming up with Bluffton Self Help again this year to help collect toys for children for the holidays. Bluffton Self Help receives many “Families for Adoption”. With this program, Members can select how many children they would like to buy for. There will be the names, ages, toy desires and clothes sizes for many children in need. The Bluffton Self Help sorts through the family sheets they have on file and picks to meet your request. When “adopting the family” you will feel great joy in wrapping and labeling every gift for each child.

If you would just like to participate without “adopting a family”, please feel free to drop off unwrapped toys at the Golf Shop, the Community Clubhouse, or the Fitness Center. These gifts will be collected and provided to children who will not receive any Christmas or holiday gifts. Gifts should be dropped off by December 20. Art Ricciardi and Brad Lightner will load the presents and deliver them to the families in need. For additional information or to “Adopt a Family”, please contact Brad Lightner at 843-706-7288 or Art Ricciardi at 843-757-9657. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

By Jack MacNeil, Men’s Golf Society

We started November with the fourth and last major

tournament of the year, the Club Championship. Under

beautiful weather and course conditions, 49 male HH

golfers participated with Bob Doerr prevailing in the

Championship Flight, Tom Moorhead in the White Tee

Flight and Russ Spicer in the Senior Flight. Net flight

winners were Nick Joly, Mike Fagan and Jim Ogden

respectively. Congratulations to the winners and many

thanks to the participants and the Club for another great

event.

The new Board went into high gear this month. Alan

Prenoveau enlisted Dave VanPuersem and Steve Rafter in

the Greens and Grounds Committee and conducted their 1st

meeting with Matt Sapochak. Dick Titus formed the

Handicap Committee consisting of Terry Hannock, John

Kolcun, Tony Berger and Gary Otto. They have launched

their education and audit activities and got the Club’s

Handicap System certified through 2011. Gary Bethard has

become a ―tiger‖ at managing dues and updating member-

ship records. The 2 Member at Large reps, Sig Borkoski

and Roger Depot have developed a Member Survey and

have started interviewing members. Rod Carlson has met

with our new Head Pro, Gary Otto and started to plan out

2010 events. Finally, I have kept Art Ricciardi extremely

busy sending out e-mails to Members as we launched the

communications improvement program. A very busy month

to say the least.

We have also launched our HHMGS Intra Club League

with the week of November 16 being the 1st week of

matches. Thirty players (15 two man teams) have joined the

League, a great response to this initiative. The format is

match play following the Hilton Head Inter Club model.

The League winner will be determined in early 2010. Best

of luck to all.

Our Saturday Men’s Day event is drawing more than 40

players each event and gaining momentum. We are also

offering a ―Skins‖ game in addition to the regular games

played. In an effort to offer more choices to our

Members, we have two types of games from different tees.

There is something for everyone. Come on out and show

your skills!

See you on the Links!

By Chris Wiemels, Ladies’ Golf Society

We had a terrific turnout for our October 23-24 HHLGS

Member-Guest this Fall, and found our ―Queen of Clubs‖

theme brought out (and probably bought out) all the

Lowcountry’s red and black attire! We had a field of 64

participants and look forward to another great event next

autumn. Congrats to our committee and our Clubhouse staff

for a tasty meal in a beautiful venue.

Our Club Championship was a success, with our winner

Kris Berger, and net winner Celina Echague. Again we had

a terrific group of ladies participate and hope to expand the

format and number of entrants next year.

The upcoming Holiday Event will be held on December 8th,

2009, and should be a fun day with lots of opportunities to

test our skills around the course. We will be distributing our

calendar for 2010, so please remember to sign up in the

Locker Room for this event. This year, in lieu of a grab

bag, we are also donating a suggested $10 towards charity.

This year the charity chosen is Habitat for Humanity’s

Women Build. The proceeds of our 50/50 weekly event

will be added to the donations collected on December 8,

making a sizable gift from our HHLGS.

Hard team work has been done to get that calendar ready for

printing, so be sure to check it out and put the major

tournaments on your own calendar for 2010. We have a

good mix of events in the upcoming season, and have

coordinated with HHMGS and Hampton Hall Club.

The LCTPA roster signup is filling up. Don’t miss your

chance to play some competition this February…be sure to

sign up by December 15, 2009.

Lastly, take a moment to remember the gifts in your lives,

and to bring in your Toy for Tots donation to the Golf Shop

this month, others share the blessings we have in

abundance. And while there, be sure to meet our new Head

Golf Professional, Gary Otto, and let’s all welcome him into

Hampton Hall Family.

Wishing you a joyous season.
