The news never stops. Perhaps at no time in recent history has that adage been more relevant than it is today. Major stories, from mass protests to hurricanes to wildfires — not to mention breaking news out of Washington — keep coming at a scale and frequency that can be hard to comprehend, even for those of us who have covered the news for decades. To meet the demands of an increasingly dynamic news cycle, we are dedicating more resources and staff to enable us to respond whenever the news happens. We are excited to announce that we have added four new positions — a senior editor, an anchor and two interactive producers — to help bolster
weekend coverage. We will be devoting more of our reporters and editors to weekend coverage as well. KQED has always covered the major news stories regardless of when they happen, but our local coverage on the weekends will help us continue to serve the evolving needs of our audiences. Whether it’s on 88.5 FM, online or on social media, today KQED is able to offer audiences consistent coverage seven days a week. We have begun to broadcast local radio reports ten times per day on Saturdays and Sundays. We’ll regularly update our website, use social media to continue to inform the public, and seek more engagement with our
audiences to help us create and curate weekend content. And when the Bay Area becomes the center of a major story — regardless of when it happens — KQED will work with the NPR national network to bring local and national audiences the stories they expect, with accuracy, depth and analysis. We’ve got you covered. — Holly Kernan, Vice President, News

The Cooler, KQED’s weekly podcast on all things pop culture, is back in the saddle for its third season! Hosts Emmanuel Hapsis, Carly Severn and Jamedra Brown Fleischman continue to find deeper meaning in what’s going on in the world of music, movies and TV. Listen as they share quirky history you weren’t taught in school (like the story of a 1920s married woman who hid a secret lover in her attic for a decade and the surprising gay backstory of King James and his Bible) and ask celebrities nosy questions (previous guests include W. Kamau Bell, Matilda star Mara Wilson and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen). We chatted up The Cooler’s supercool hosts to dish about their favorites stories of 2017 and more!
Arts
Emmanuel HapsisWhat’s your favorite Cooler episode or moment from 2017?Last spring, there was a small moment when I offhandedly mentioned my love of snail mail. That inspired listeners to send in letters. I returned the favor by sending them postcards from my Greek vacation. I love that even with a medium as seemingly one-sided as podcasting, there can still be a dialogue (and cute stamps too!). Let’s pen-pal like it’s 1999! First celebrity crush?Aladdin by a long shot. The mischief in his eyes! That little purple vest! Heart flutter!
Carly SevernWhat’s your favorite Cooler episode or moment from 2017?Returning for a third season, of course! And getting to crash the American Idol auditions in Oakland for our second episode this season. It was truly eye-opening — not the least because the production team hadn’t realized their open-air film set in Jack London Square was right by the world’s loudest Amtrak line.
First celebrity crush?David Duchovny, of X-Files fame, for sure. I was totally entranced by his beautiful nose and mumbling monotone. Plus, his obsessive quest to prove his sister was abducted by aliens indicated he was pretty family oriented.
Jamedra Brown FleischmanWhat’s your favorite Cooler episode or moment from 2017?I love learning about creepy things. The interesting underworld of tickling Emmanuel introduced us to in an episode called “The Dark and Twisted World of Tickling” still sticks with me. Another episode that gave me nightmares is “Chilling Pop Culture Curses, From Poltergeist to Drake,” in which Carly told us that eerie catacombs story. Eeeek!
First celebrity crush?Hands down, Marques Houston from the boy band Immature. To this day, the song “Neva Lie” holds a special place in my heart.

Picking up where A Year in Space left off, Beyond a Year in Space chronicles astronaut Scott Kelly’s return and adjustment to life after spending 12 months on the International Space Station (ISS), the longest space mission in American history. The premiere — airing Wednesday, November 15 at 9pm on KQED 9 — picks up the story with Kelly’s last day in space and return to Earth. It will be preceded by an encore broadcast of A Year in Space at 8pm. Although Kelly maintained a rigorous exercise program in space, the physical toll of the voyage is evident upon his return as he suffers from sore muscles, stiff joints, flu-like symptoms, skin sensitivity and inflammation. “Gravity definitely gives you a beat-down when you get back,” Kelly says. “My feet still bother me some — I didn’t walk on them for a year!” In addition to seeing Kelly’s long-awaited reunion with his family and friends at home in Texas, the
film follows him and his identical twin brother, fellow astronaut Mark Kelly, as they undergo testing for NASA’s twin study. The twin study hopes to precisely identify what changes Scott underwent after 12 months aboard the ISS by comparing him with Mark, who spent the year on Earth. The data NASA aims to gain from this study will help scientists understand what it will take for humans to endure long-duration space travel in preparation for a mission to Mars, an unprecedented three-year journey. Viewers will also meet two of the astronauts hoping to make it to Mars: biologist Jessica Meir and former Navy pilot Victor Glover. Join KQED at the Chabot Space and Science Center on Friday, November 3, for a sneak preview of Beyond a Year in Space, featured as part of Chabot’s First Fridays event series from 6–10pm. Info at chabotspace.org/first-fridays.

Science Education
Above the Noise, KQED’s new video series, investigates the research behind topics relevant to teens (such as racial bias in the criminal justice system and psychological impacts of social media use) and goes beyond the hype to figure out what’s really going on. Young journalist hosts Myles Bess and Shirin Ghaffary invite viewers to ask their own questions and they’ll respond in subsequent episodes, which appear on YouTube every other Wednesday. This KQED effort to produce engaging media for teens, who then evaluate evidence and ask critical questions about issues that impact their lives, is one approach to adapting media literacy education in order to meet the challenge of the new “post-truth” context we live in. The series has potential applications in the classroom and beyond.

You may have noticed that Sunday afternoons on KQED 88.5 FM sound a little different. As of October, we’ve slotted in three shows aimed to inspire new ways of thinking and looking at the world. On Sundays at 3pm, the TED Radio Hour, hosted by Guy Raz, offers a journey through fascinating ideas — astonishing inventions, fresh approaches to old problems, and new ways to think and create. Based on talks given by speakers at TED conferences, each show is centered around a common theme — such as the source of happiness, crowd-sourcing innovation, power shifts and inexplicable connections — and injects soundscapes and conversations that bring these ideas to life.
If you’re looking for the latest economic news reported in a casual tone with plenty of context, tune into Planet Money at 7pm on Sunday. It’s followed by How I Built This, a show about innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists and the stories behind the movements they built.

Released in 1961, West Side Story still holds the record for the most Academy Award wins of any musical. A modern-day Romeo and Juliet story, the film features unforgettable performances by Natalie Wood and Rita Moreno, and memorable song-and-dance numbers thanks to Jerome Robbins’ choreography, Leonard Bernstein’s score and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics.
West Side Story airs Saturday, November 4, at 8pm on KQED 9.

Royal Wives at War presents a revealing new look at England’s abdication crisis of 1936, seen through the eyes of the two women at its heart: Wallis Simpson (Gina McKee) and Queen Elizabeth (Emma Davies). Combining dramatic reconstructions, archives and a chorus of acquaintances and biographers, Royal Wives at War tells the intimate and moving story of two strong women and the friction that characterized their relationship.
Royal Wives at War airs Friday, November 10, at 8pm on KQED 9.

This new adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel tells the story of Anne Shirley, a precocious redheaded orphan placed in the care of uptight Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew, played by Martin Sheen. Neither the adventurous Anne (Ella Ballentine) nor the conservative Marilla (Sara Botsford) could anticipate the profound effect they’d have on each other’s lives.
Anne of Green Gables airs Thursday, November 16, at 8pm on KQED 9.

Don’t miss the U.S. broadcast premiere of Ron Howard’s authorized, award-winning documentary about The Beatles’ fascinating early career. The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — The Touring Years chronicles the band from its first gigs at the Cavern Club in Liverpool to its last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966. The film explores how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together.
