Overview of the Science Investigation: A Study of Volcanoes

Modified for Lower Level Learners

OBSERVE/QUESTION

Students review key vocabulary such as : volcano, lava, eruptStudents can watch a video of a volcano erupt (see resources) and are introduced to the symbols of VOLCANO and LAVA as these enter the video. A model may also be used to help with understanding.Students choose a research question for the investigation:Will volcano erupt?

PLAN Students identify the tools they will need in the investigation such as:Thermometer Timer/StopwatchScience GogglesLab coat

Students assist in creating the volcano model, using pictures identified in books and online.Students may assist in creating a data sheet that captures: (1) Test 1: lava of 2 different temperatures

CONDUCT Students can conduct the investigation by Taking observational data on the lava (Volcano erupt) Students record their data (place ERUPT symbol on Data sheet)

ANALYZE Students review their data to answer their research question with help of a partner

Vocabulary Definitions

volcano a mountain that produces magma, lava, and ash and is formed by cracks in the Earth's surface. A volcano can occur in any place where there is a deep crack.

magma melted rock under the surface of the Earth

lava magma that reaches the Earth's surface

crater a bowl-shaped geological formation at the top of a volcano

ash clouds burnt material that shoots out of the top of a volcano and forms a cloud

erupt when lava and gas are discharged from a volcanic vent.

ERUPT

Raised model of volcano.

Insert a wet, warm tube with liquid into the symbol down the side as lava.

Science Investigation: VolcanoesObserve/Question

Write a research question below.

Science Investigation: VOLCANOESPLANNING: Identifying the Evidence and Tools Needed to Answer the Research Question

Science Tools Needed

Put actual objects on chart

Put this symbol on top of a hand warmer

Put this symbol on top of an ice pack

Science Investigation: VolcanoesLab Report

CONDUCTING: Following Procedures

TEST #1 ProceduresLava of Different Temperatures

Completed

How Did You Do?

1 Put hand on volcano(place non-skid hand outline in this box)

2

Student indicates when the lava reaches hand by touching the erupt symbol

Shows student where to place hand

Student feels for when the lava reaches their

hand and then touches ERUPT symbol placed

nearby
