Yucca Plantation,now known asMelrose, is a 200-

year old cotton and pecanplanta t ionlocated onthe banks ofCane RiverLake.

The storyof romanticM e l r o s ePlantat ionbegins withthe legendof MarieT h e r e s eC o i n c o i n ,who wasborn, in1742, aslave in thehouseholdof LouisJuche reaude St. Denis,the first commandant of thepost at Natchitoches.

Marie Therese became thematriarch of a family offourteen children-four blackand ten of Franco-Africanblood—and the founder of aunique colony of people.Along with several otherchildren, she was sold toThomas Pierre Metoyer, who later freed her andeventually all her Metoyerchildren.

Between 1794 and 1803,she and her sons received anumber of land grants; thelands forming MelrosePlantation being recorded inthe name of her son LouisDescendants of theMetoyers live along theriver today, a people proudof their heritage and culture.

Louis Metoyer originallyacquired the land in 1795.Metoyer was the second sonof Jean Baptiste Metoyer, aFrench planter, and MarieThérèse Coincoin anAfrican slave owned byMetoyer and later freed by

him. He and his descendentsbuilt and managed a planta-tion here until 1847, when itwas sold to the Hertzogs,

the family that ownedMagnolia Plantation. JosephHenry later acquired theland and moved his familyonto it in 1898.

He died the next year andthe property was passed onto his son, John HamptonHenry, and his daughter-in-law, Cammie Garrett Henry.

Miss Cammie, as she wasknown, was a college-edu-cated woman who was fondof culture and society. Shestarted an art colony at theplantation that became oneof the most popular in theSouth, entertaining suchfamous names as WilliamFaulkner, Lyle Saxon andWilliam Spratling.
